Four Square

Four Square
36" x 36" Mixed Media on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Painting
I am closing out 2012 with a new rooster painting.  Four Square is a large square canvas, with four rooster images painted with wide brush strokes.  Each rooster is painted differently, as if they have their own personality and individuality.  The close-up image below shows that there is an abstract quality to the images of these fun roosters.  I amped up the color, and exaggerated the features on the fine feathered creatures.

Here is a closer look at the rooster in the top right corner of the painting.  As you can see, there are layers of paint, ink and oil sticks on the canvas.  Since this is on a gallery wrap canvas, a frame is optional.  This contemporary rooster painting is looking for a new home...contact Kay if you are interested in this painting.  I hope that everyone has a fun and safe New Years Eve.  I will check in tomorrow with a new painting for 2013 and a new painting challenge to start the new year.  Kay at kay@kwyne.com.

Season Of Color

Season Of Color
18" x 18" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
I was looking at this painting yesterday at the studio, liking the color palette used.  I had mixed some beige/salmon colors and some greens that I normally don't use in my paintings.  The blues were mixed from ultra marine, cobalt and radiant turquoise. I was looking at the shapes and saw something new to my eye.  When I painted it, I was going for a contemporary landscape, with trees, river and sky.  Now I see a cityscape...with tall buildings and a road.  I think that is one of the neat things about abstracts-you can see what you want to see in them if you let your imagination go with it. Thanks for viewing this blog and the art posted.  Have a good day!  Kay at kay@kwyne.com

Yarn

Yarn
Contemporary Oil Painting
This is a 18" x 18" oil painting on a gallery wrap canvas. Very colorful. Inspired by yarn. Lots of stacked up yarn in a bin. It is a kaleidoscope of variegated colors. I thought I would rename this painting, but Yarn it is. I was thinking that a series of yarn paintings might be interesting...take  a trip through a yarn shop and see all of the beautiful colors, textures and thicknesses of the yarns.  Maybe I will put that on my to-do list.  I am getting ready to start a new series for 2013, but I have not decided exactly what my guidelines for that series will be.  Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing. No frame needed...it is ready to hang!  Kay at kay@kwyne.com

Peaceful Path

Peaceful Path
48" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
When I painted this contemporary landscape canvas, I wanted to let the eye wander over the canvas as if you were exploring and walking through the trees, towards the mountains.  There is a path leading to the base of the mountains, which is the focal point.  The color palette for this painting is different than the norm for me...I wanted to use more neutral and earthy colors rather than bright, bold and vibrant colors. When looking at this painting up close you want to touch it...the palette knife allowed me to put some texture on the canvas.  Peaceful Path would make a wonderful addition to a home or office ...please contact me if you are interested in this painting or any of the art posted here on this blog.  Thanks, Kay at kay@kwyne.com.

Wing Series: Painting #12

Wing Series:  Painting #13 out of 100
I was revisiting some of my paintings from the past year, and this 8" x 8" oil on RayMar Panel caught my eye.  I was painting on these small panels on a daily basis, and enjoying them, until I had something come up....distractions of daily life, or a commission ---- I don't remember exactly.  I got side-tracked.  But, I am going to start #31 soon....maybe with the new year.  I hope to get into the studio today and get organized and paint something fun.  Now that Christmas is over, I have the new year to look forward to with new projects and lots of painting!  Thanks for viewing, Kay at kay@kwyne.com.

Dancer

Dancer
30" x 30" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
This is a piece that I worked on for a long time, and had entered it in a juried exhibit.  This is a very painterly piece, with wide brushstrokes and bold color.  I loved the pose of this horse, and my inspiration was a photograph of my nephew riding during a riding competition in Illinois.  I purposely left the saddle and rider out of the painting, wanting to focus on the curves and the profile of the horse.  I used oil sticks to pull the painting together and give it a contemporary look.  I know I changed the background several times.  Thanks for looking at this blog....and Merry Christmas to you and yours.  Kay at kay@kwyne.com.

I give a big thank you to Diane at Adieb Khadoure Fine Art for selling this piece yesterday.  This contemporary palette knife painting is being shipped to new owners in Washington, and I am told it will hang above a grand piano.  That is neat!  I am hoping to squeeze in some studio time today to start a new commission...I am getting ready to spend all day with our kiddos.  You will not find me at the mall today...all of my shopping is complete, and only cooking left to do.  Thanks for looking at the art posted here.  Kay

Horizon Series:  Abstract Without A Name
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
I still haven't decided on a name for the contemporary abstract painting.  Maybe someone out there can help me out.  When you stand back and look at the shapes, it looks like a landscape painting with refection in the water.  Or maybe you see something else.  Anyway, this piece is available and would love to have a new home.  Contact Kay at kay@kwyne.com for more information on this painting.  Thanks, and have a great day.  Kay

I am posting this painting because of our Texas weather....the wind has been blowing and blowing and bringing in winter weather.  The wind has kept me awake for two nights...so I thought it was appropriate to post this painting.  This painting would look great above a fireplace or sofa.  These contemporary aspens are looking for a new home.  Contact Kay at kay@kwyne.com for more info.  Thanks for viewing!  Kay

Dragonfly Bubble

Dragonfly Bubble
22" x 28" Mixed Media on Linen Gallery Wrap
Contemporary Abstract Dragonfly
Mixed media is so much fun to work in...the possibilities are endless.  I started with a linen gallery wrap  surface with clear gesso, knowing that I wanted the natural linen to show through.  I used ink, oil colors, and oil sticks to create this abstract.  The dragonfly has a stained glass appearance and is colorful with transparent oils.  This funky dragonfly is available for sale.  Please contact Kay at kay@kwyne.com for more information on this painting.  It does not need a frame.  Thanks for viewing.  Kay

Cross My Heart

Cross My Heart
60" x 20" Oil on Linen Gallery Wrap
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Beautiful colors of magenta, earth green, turquoise and cad orange make this painting colorful and cheerful.  The abstract aspens are overlapping each other, with the background colors peaking through. This is a unique size painting, and will fit in a long, narrow wall or at the end of a hallway.  The natural linen peaks through in several places...I love the rich, natural look it has.  If you would like more information on this painting, please contact me.  Thanks, Kay at kay@kwyne.com

Cock A Doodle Blue

Cock A Doodle Blue
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Roosters, roosters and more roosters....this is my latest contemporary oil painting.  I started with an idea, and blocked off the background using neutral grays.  Then in a very loose way brushed in my roosters.  I used raw umber to draw in the shapes --- using a filbert brush.  I wanted an abstract but somewhat decorative look for the background.  So I started to add some swirly feather-like shapes to add to the gray.  The got out my trusty t-sqauare to add some straight lines.  I did not want to over-paint, so I forced myself to walk away from the painting at several stages of the painting.  Contact me if you are interested in this painting....kay@kwyne.com.

Cock A Doodle Do

Cock A Doodle Do
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Roosters and Chickens
Steel gray, icey blue, torrit gray and ultramarine blue with touches of cad red and cad yellow fill this canvas.  These roosters and chickens are colorful and fun, with some loose brush strokes to let the viewer use some imagination.  They are running off the canvas, looking at each other and looking very important.  I did not want to over-paint this one, as I had fun just cutting loose on the colors and then got out the oil sticks for some line drawings.  These fine feathered friends are looking for a new home...contact me if you are interested in this contemporary oil painting.  Thanks for viewing this blog.  Kay at kay@kwyne.com

Perfect Day

Perfect Day
48" x 72" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I took a break from on the collaborative commission that Sharon and I have been working on for the past three weeks and put this canvas on my easel.  When I needed a break from the long hours of that job, I worked on this painting.  I wanted to paint something loose and colorful, fun and happy.  I used two different palette knives on this painting...so there is plenty of paint built up on the canvas.  Blending colors, I was mindful that it doesn't take much mixing to create MUD.  I also got brave and put my least favorite color in....green.  I usually back away from greens of any shade, but cad green was a good choice, especially when it bounces off the cad reds and oranges.  Thanks for looking at this painting.  Contact me if you have any questions about this painting....kay@kwyne.com.

Thoughtful

Thoughtful
24" x 20" Oil on Linen Gallery Wrap
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This arrangement was leftover from a Valentine's Day gift...I loved the shapes of the flowers and the refection in the glass vase with the stems in it.  I put some dark torrit grey paint at the vase...to ground it. I used the palette knife on this linen, and let the natural linen show through, not painting it all out.  Thick, thick, thick paint adds texture and interest to this contemporary floral, giving it an abstract quality. Contemporary Cow
12" x 9" Oil on RayMar Panel
A photograph of some cows on a farm in southern Texas was my inspiration for this painting.  I thought he looked like he was talking to me with his mouth open the way it was.  He had big ears, maybe he had not grown into them yet.  I like the way he was standing and looking at me.  If you are interested in purchasing this painting, please contact me at kay@kwyne.com.  Thanks for looking!  Kay

This still life is hanging at the studio.  It looks fabulous framed up. Heavy brushstrokes and deep rich colors give this piece a painterly quality.  I usually stay away from greens, but I used them on this contemporary painting.  I love putting the subject matter in my paintings off-center.  I think it makes the composition more interesting to view.  If you would like more photos of this painting, or would like to purchase please contact me!  Happy Monday.  Kay....at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com.

Maggie
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar panel
This was a small demo that I did a few weeks ago, I wanted to touch it up in the studio, but decided not to.  I knew that if I got the brushes out and started working on a couple of things that I would end up over-painting or simply repainting the whole doggie.  So, it is complete!  Have a great day.  I hope to be in the studio later today painting on a large canvas just for the fun of it...Kay at kay@kwyne.com

Windy December

Windy December
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
En Plein Air
Yesterday was a beautiful December Monday at White Rock Lake.  I was with the Tutti group painting.  I started this 8" x 10" with two brushes, a filbert and a flat.  My vision for this painting was to nail down the colors of this beautiful fall day.  There were so many natural golds and greens and oranges in the landscape, but soon my attention went from the colors to the WIND.  It was so windy, which forced me to work quickly.  I know that the wind contributed some flecks of texture (dirt and bugs).  I pulled out my trusty #24 palette knife and started scraping and moving the paint around, making the hard edges go away and blending the oils.  Here is my finished painting, Windy December.

In this photo you can see my set-up at the lake.  My guerrilla box stood up against the wind that was whipping around us.  I used a limited palette - six colors and white - which makes it so much easier to paint quickly.  Thanks for viewing.  I start the large commission today, so my time will be focused on that project for the upcoming weeks.  Kay at kay@kwyne.com.

Contemporary Roosters and Chickens

This painting is a fun and colorful piece that I completed last week.  I was experimenting with the background, using ink.  The expressive roosters and chickens are in oils.  This is on a 36" x 36" gallery wrap canvas, so it is ready to hang...a frame is optional.  I need to title this painting....any suggestions would be appreciated!  This painting is currently hanging in Dallas at the Dutch Art Gallery.  Thanks for viewing.  Kay@kwyne.com.

Horizon Series: Abstract 1027

Horizon Series: Abstract 1027
22" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Palette Knife Painting
This abstract went through alot of changes before it was completed. When I started it, I was using a totally different color scheme and did not know I was going in this direction. I applied layers and layers of color...there is alot of movement and depth in this abstract. I used both the brush and palette knife on this one. Lines, shapes, color and texture...it is all on this canvas. I really like this size canvas...it hangs well above a dark piece of furnture or tilted up against the wall, sitting on a table or cabinet. This contemporary abstract is on gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is needed. It is ready to hang! Thanks so much for viewing this blog. Lucky Dogs Street Scene

Lucky Dogs Street Scene is a small oil painting, 12" x 12" on gallery wrap canvas.  I was inspired to paint the street vendors close to the French Quarters in New Orleans on a visit several years ago.  This painting has been donated to Taste of the NFL for the silent auction to be held (in New Orleans) at the annual event the eve before the Super Bowl.  Go to http://www.tasteofthenfl.com for more information on this fun event that raises millions of dollars for food banks.

On my easel...

On my easel...I started this painting earlier this week.  I had wanted to do something different with the background, but got into the rooster and chickens, and could not stop.  I doubt that I can get the background work done at this point without messing up the chickens.  I have discovered after many years, it is best not to "fuss" with the paint strokes once they are in.  Make every brushstroke count.  After a wonderful Thanksgiving I am ready to get back into the studio and finish this painting.  I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving...now it is time to decorate for Christmas!  Kay

I See Everything

I See Everything
Oil on Canvas

This 18" x 36" Gallery Wrap Canvas has the image of the pig coming off the canvas as if he was walking towards you.  I used a very wide brush to apply the oils.  His eyes are hidden by his big, floppy ears, but he could see, therefore the title, I See Everything.  My inspiration for this painting was a pig that I photographed on a recent trip to Illinois.  Thanks for viewing this blog and my art...Kay

Covered In Feathers

Covered In Feathers
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
30" x 30"Contemporary Rooster and Chickens

Bold brush strokes, bold colors and loose paint complete this contemporary painting.  I enjoyed painting this one...I was exploring the "look" of a french country rooster with my own painterly spin on it.  It all came together after I sectioned off the background colors.  I had a plan, but did not know exactly how it would turn out.  I did not want my colors to get muddy, so I did not over-paint.  I put the brakes on and made every stroke count, trying not to go back into the paint once I laid a color in.  I used three paint brushes, a wide flat, a small flat and a liner.  I hope to get into the studio today and paint for ME!!!  I have a huge commission coming up, and once I get started on that, I won't be painting any roosters.  Thanks for viewing this blog and my art!  KMW at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com

Piggy Wiggy

Piggy Wiggy
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting
I had to paint this piggy that I saw scampering around at an Amish farm in Illinois a couple of weeks ago....he had a great shape, wonderful coloring, and ran around the farm with an attitude.  I think he was in charge.....this pig was running loose, checking out the horses, cattle, and sheep.  I don't know if he had broken out of his pen, but when he can running towards me I hopped back into the car.  I wanted Piggy Wiggy on a square canvas because of his stockiness.  It was intentional to have him painted off the canvas to imply his size and give interest to the painting.  Thanks for viewing this blog and the art posted.  Kay at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com

Quatro!

Quatro!
36" x 36" Oil and Ink on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This is a fun and loose painting...when I started out, I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted the four images to be.  The first thing I did was put out some neutral colors for the background.  I usually use bright, bold colors so I had to keep telling myself that something neutral would make the roosters pop off the canvas.  I used some ink to produce some lettering.  I had five shades of grey ink that I used.  Then I started with some lines and geometric shapes.  Then the fun part.....I started with a wide brush and put in an outline on each rooster....I was afraid that I would over-paint this, so I forced myself to put the brushes down and go home.  The next day I used a liner to suggest the details of each rooster...and I did not want each one to be the same....so, here you go.  Quatro!  This painting is drying in the studio right now...they are fun, colorful, bold and looking for a new home.  Thanks for looking at this blog and my art.  Kay at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com

I am working on this large piece...and painted into the evening yesterday on it.  I was afraid that I would overwork it, so I stopped to photograph.  I wanted all four roosters different, but the same in size and eyes.  I am planning on giving each rooster a pop of color, eyes, and maybe some small detail for the beaks.  I hope to post the finished painting tomorrow.  Thanks for viewing.  Kay at kay@kwyne.com.
