Songbirds

Songbirds
36" x 12" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
The size of this canvas is perfect for birds perched up in a tree.  I painted this in a couple of hours, not sure how many birds would be sitting in the tree.  I started by toning the canvas, then drawing with willow charcoal stick, then with transparent orange and a filbert brush.  I brushed in pieces of color indicating the light peeking through the branches.  This canvas needs a frame...once it is dry I will take it to the frame shop and pick out a handsome moulding.  For now this painting needs to dry in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

Double Trouble

Double Trouble
NFS
40" x 30"  Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
(Diptych size:  40" x 60")
This contemporary abstract was created to hang as one large piece, measuring 40" x 60", plus any wall space that might be in-between the two canvases.  With this commission, I concentrated on the color palette, and once I established my colors, put some shapes and movement on the canvas.  I used a large palette knife to apply the layers of oil colors.  The soft colors over-lap and blend into each other.  There is some texture on the surface, and you can see some choppy knife marks in the paint.  I did use impasto to get some body into the oil paints.  This painting is drying...and ready to hang!  Thanks for looking at this blog and the art posted.  Have a creative day.  Kay

Extravagant Ways

Extravagant Ways
Oil and Oil Stick on 40" x 40" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Floral
I love painting on large square canvases.  This 40" x 40" canvas is drying in the studio, waiting to be varnished.  Actually this is a mixed media piece because I used charcoal, oils, and oil bars.  Using the willow charcoal stick, I scraped into the layered oil when it was wet.  I enjoyed experimenting with different color combos as I worked my way through the painting.  The asymmetrical design and irregular shapes gives the imagination a chance to go to work.  Contact Kay for more info on this original painting.  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  KMW

Over The Top

Over The Top
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting started out on my easel as a horizontal abstract with shapes and colors representing a keyboard.  After working with oil sticks, palette knife and a rubber scraper, it was in a state of uncertainty.  Last week I decided to flip the canvas and paint something abstract with the canvas sitting vertically.  Once colors and shapes appeared, I saw a very colorful and textural floral still life.  It is "Over The Top"!  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog...KMW

Songbird #4

Songbird #4
6" x 6" x 2" Oil on Cradleboard
Perched on a branch, this small bird is looking in the distance.  I painted the branches with a palette knife and the bird with a wide flat brush.  The sides of the cradleboard has clear varnish, so the natural woodgrain is what you see.  This small painting can be perched on a book shelf or hung on a wall.  Contact Kay for more information on this songbird painting.  Thanks for looking...KMW

I continue to work on smalls right along with the large canvases in the studio.  This panel started with a sap green base, and I worked beautiful pinks, peaches and lavenders into the still life.  Contact Kay for more info...this small painting would make a perfect gift or stocking stuffer!  KMW

Oh Happy Day!

Oh Happy Day!
18" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
My favorite canvas shape is the square, but I really like the canvas I picked for this horizontal still life.  The vase of flowers is intentionally off-center.  The bouquet fills the canvas and is spilling over the edges, implying that the bouquet is full and over-flowing.  I used the palette knife on most of this painting.  The canvas has plenty of texture and color.  I focused on lavenders and greens and greys and mixed piles and piles of oils when I painted this.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Farewell

Farewell
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Piles of oil paint were on my palette, and with one palette knife I covered the canvas with a baker's dozen of roses.  It felt great to be back into the studio after a three week break.  I mixed my colors so that every layer of paint would be in harmony with the next layer.  There are small specs of rose, red, and turquoise spicing up the painting, but for the most part greys, lavenders and greens, and naples yellow dominate.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

Wheat Fields

Wheat Fields
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

A big sky with fast moving clouds and a colorful wheat field is my subject matter for this canvas.  Using a wide flat brush I built up the paint on the clouds, giving them some shape and movement.  The tall grass has reflections of the sky painted in it.  It is ready to hang, as the sides of the canvas are painted and framing is optional.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking...KMW

Signs of Summer

Signs of Summer
16" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Seascape
I had a panel that I was ready to trash, and decided to turn the panel upside down and start something new.  No more boats on this painting!  I had lots of lavenders, greys, and flesh tones on my palette, so I decided I would paint the beach.  The seagrass (thinking of Seabrook Island) is shooting out of the sand---I wish I had used some impasto on the grass, as it will take a long time for the globs of paint to dry. Thanks for looking at my blog...I hope that you can feel the sand between your toes when you see this painting.  Thanks, KMW
