Joyful Day by Kay Wyne

Joyful Day
Contemporary Floral Landscape
60" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I love to paint on a large surface.  It is liberating to make big wide brushstrokes with a brush or apply loads of paint with a palette knife.  A 60" x 36" canvas is fun, challenging and my image/subject matter is always changing....as you can see below I did stop and take some pics along my painting journey.

First, I had an idea in my head and thought that I would sketch it out with charcoal on the canvas.  Then I scrubbed in some colors.  And more colors.  Finally getting the white canvas covered up.

I wanted my color palette to be in cool lavenders and greys....and some greens.  I got off-track as you can see in the fifth photo.  I cut loose with some oranges, reds, and blues.  The next day when I came into the studio, I realized that I had gotten de-railed.  So I spent more than two hours mixing wonderful purples. magentas, greens, and greys to bring the colors back to my original plan.  Of course I used huge amounts of oils and there is texture and depth to this painting.

This painting is drying at the studio, and tomorrow is day #1 in Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.  Check out Leslie's blog...It's always fun to see what everyone is posting on a daily basis.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Have an artful day.  Kay Wyne

Field of Color
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Color variation and texture make this contemporary landscape painting interesting.  I mixed and mixed the oils as I moved across the canvas.  When looking at this painting, sometimes I see patches of flowers, and sometimes I see water.  This painting is dry, and ready for a new home.  Framing is optional because the sides of the painting are painted.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay

On My Easel...

On My Easel....
Contemporary Oil Painting
First layer of paint...and not sure if it will be a horizontal or vertical format.  The heavy duty canvas is 30" x 40" x 2 1/2".  A great size.  Because of the deep stretcher bars, it is chunky and thick.  I got the magenta and cad yellow out to tone the canvas.  I am always excited with the first step of my paintings....I will post what I decide to do with it.  It could be an abstract, a still life, a landscape....not sure at this stage of the game.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

On my easel...

On my easel....
This is the painting that I have been working on in the studio this week.
It is a large canvas, 60" x 36" vertical.
I started out with something in mind with greys, lavenders and greens....but
at some point started putting in some reds, oranges and blues.
I may go back to my original plan, with was something like this:
I was using a large filbert brush in the beginning, and switched to a palette knife.  And then I started mixing some warm colors and adding them into the mix.  Now there is texture all over the canvas....as seen in this pic:
Layers of paint, with impasto added for texture.
Thanks for looking at my blog...I will post the finished painting soon.
Have an artful day....Kay

How Now Brown Cow by Kay Wyne

How Now Brown Cow
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Bovine Series
Standing in his field, this contemporary cow is looking right at you.  He has the stare going on, and he is as still as a statue.  I had seen this handsome guy at the Ft. Worth Stock Show and had to paint him.  He is dry and ready to hang on the wall.  I painted the sides of the gallery wrap canvas, so framing is optional. Color of Summer by Kay Wyne

Color of Summer
10" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This landscape was painted with a palette knife.....all the way.  It was fun to paint because I mixed my paints as I moved the paint around.  There is texture on the surface of the canvas panel because I put in thick chunks of paint as I worked on this painting.  Color of Summer is framed in a handsome frame, and is needs a new home!  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking.....Kay

Sunshine

Sunshine
10" x 10" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Series
This small rooster is dry now and ready for a new home.  I think Sunshine would look great on a kitchen wall or sitting on a countertop.  I painted this colorful rooster so that he is nestled in the grass, and pops with the contrasting black background.  I used a wide flat bright brush all the way on this fine feathered friend...you can see the spontaneous strokes in the grass and the feathers.  Contact Kay for more info on Sunshine.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay

Anyway The Wind Blows

Anyway The Wind Blows
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
My color palette with just about every color in the book....lots of violets, reds, greens, ochres, turquoise, raspberry ....it is all in there.  I can imagine standing in a large open field with the wind blowing, and seeing so many colors, with them fading off into the horizon.  Every blade of tall grass is a different  in color, giving this painting a fresh contemporary feel.  I would hope that the viewer would look at this painting and be able to feel the wind whipping around.  This painting is ready to hang...with or without a frame.   Contact Kay for more info on this painting.  Kay

Beyond

Beyond
22" x 28" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Floral Landscape
Now hanging at Bill Hester Fine Art in Santa Fe, NM.
This is one of my favorite floral landscape paintings.
I like the layers of color and the way the path fades into
the horizon.  It was fun to paint, and the paints and my brush
were working well together the day I painted this canvas.
It is framed in a dark wood moulding with
a gold lip.  Looks very handsome!  Contact ME if you

Red Dragonfly - Sold

Red Dragonfly
Sold
32" x 32" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I was looking through my portfolio today and ran across an image of a painting I really enjoyed painting.  It is sold, but there are several qualities that I like in this painting.  The color palette is vivid and bold.  The colors are not muddy.  The abstract quality is there, but you can still identify the subject.  I like how the dragonfly looks---fluttering or moving across the canvas.  I am working on a new palette knife painting in the studio, and would love to repeat some of these qualities, which is a challenge considering the subject matter.  (Not a beautifiul dragonfly.)  Thanks for looking at this blog...more painting in the studio today.  Kay

Crazy For You

Crazy For You
12" x 12" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
This is my latest floral.  My studio partner gave me a photograph that I kind of used as a jumping-off place.  A start.  And then I took it from there, cutting loose with color and simple strokes.  This painting does need a frame.  It has thick painterly strokes on the canvas, and would look great in a home or office. Contact Kay with any comments or questions on my art.  Thanks, Kay Wyne

Field of Color

Field of Color
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Floral Landscape
Field of Color is now drying at the studio...the thick layers of paint will take some time to dry.  My focus on painting this landscape was achieving harmonious colors that work well together, and please the eye.  Here is a close-up---you can see the thick application of paint and the texture.  I used a palette knife all the way.  I was in the studio mixing and mixing piles of paint, getting the colors all to relate to each other.

Lost

Lost
16" x 12" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Soft colors and texture makes the viewer really look and use his/her imagination.  There are subtle changes and shapes that my eye see an abstract landscape.  A palette knife was used all the way on this canvas...giving it a very abstract quality.  The sides of the canvas are painted, so framing is not necessary.  This painting is for sale...conact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay Wyne

Lovely Day

Lovely Day
10" x 10" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life
I have been into small still life paintings lately, and this one is drying on my easel.  I used a #12 Bright on this canvas, and was able to put down crisp, angular strokes.  No blending or fussing with it...I put a stroke of color down and left it.  I named this painting, "Lovely Day" because most person have lovely days when they give or receive bouquets of flowers.I am spending all of my time in the studio getting ready for a several juried shows and one three-woman show.  Feel free to contact me at MY EMAIL with any questions or comments.  Thanks for looking at the art posted on this blog.  Kay Wyne

Soaking Up Sunshine

Soaking Up Sunshine
14" x 14" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Thick paint applied with a new wide brush made this painting so much fun to paint.  Up until the last few strokes, the vase was square in shape, but with the background window pains, I though it was all too angular.  So I changed it up.  The 14" x 14" canvas size is a nice medium size---you wouldn't think that there is much difference between a 12" x 12" and this size...but there is a huge difference.  This contemporary still life is colorful, bold, and happy.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at the art posted on this blog.  KAY

Kaleidoscope Rooster

Kaleidoscope Rooster
18" x 18" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Painting
This caged up rooster wants a new home.  He is colorful and full of personality as he is perched in his cage.  He was painted with thick strokes of oils, giving the canvas texture along with colorful energy.  My painting was loose and expressive, and the color palette was a bit different for me...just pushing myself to paint outside of the box.  I certainly didn't put any limitations on myself.  The canvas is a bit abstract and playful with the bright and contrasting colors vibrating against each other.  This painting is ready to hang...framing is optional, as the sides of the canvas is painted. Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary painting.  Thanks for looking.....KMW

Misty - Sold!

Misty
30" x 30" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Thanks to Pam Massar, owner of Dutch Art Gallery for framing and selling this large landscape painting.  I love the colors on this canvas, they are soft and harmonious, leading the eye into the horizon.  I enjoyed painting the dramatic clouds...I am so pleased that Misty has a new home!  I have more paintings on the easel in the studio as it is too hot and humid to paint outside right now.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay Wyne
