Making Memories

Making Memories

8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel

Contemporary Oil Painting

Our daughter, son in-law and family are at the beach, and I was looking through some photos they sent.  This one grabbed me, and I simplified the composition from the photo.  The waves were crashing into these two as they waded out into the water with nets, crabbing.  I was thinking that they would come home with lots of good memories...therefore, it was an easy one to title, "Making Memories".  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

White Rock Lake - Plein Air

White Rock Lake
Plein Air-Alla Prima
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape
Venturing outside this morning, I drove to White Rock Lake, and painted at the same spot I painted last week.  It looked totally different since the tall grass in the foreground had been cut.  The patterns that the mower left were interesting, so that's what I focused on.  I forgot my palette knife, so all the paint was applied with a Bright Brush.  I didn't fuss with it, spent a nice quiet morning outside.  Thanks for looking at my art.  Kay

White Rock Morning

White Rock Morning
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Plein Air Painting

Here are a few pics from our morning at the lake.  Susan and I had a great time...and my challenge was painting with only three colors.  Since I am a colorist by heart, it was a different experience to mix every color that I used from only three tubes!  This painting is drying in the studio, with bugs and a few speckles of dirt in it.

Here are a few pics from our plein air experience.  We enjoyed it so much that we said we would make it a date....on a weekly basis.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Dallas White Rock

Dallas White Rock
6" x 6" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape Painting/Palette Knife
This is a small study that I did early one morning this week.  Yes, it's August, and it's hot and we are social distancing.  But I ventured out of the studio and picked a beautiful view of downtown Dallas and White Rock Lake with my painting friend, Susan.  (Venturing out of my comfort zone....)  We picked a spot under a huge tree, trying to avoid putting up our umbrellas.  Lots of bikers, walkers and doggie walkers came by to say hello and check on our progress.  Here is my second stab at painting the Dallas skyline with the lake.  Clearly, I jazzed it up with a little more color than we have in the heat of the summer.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

Creative Sheltering

Creative Sheltering
Coming soon!
I am excited that many of the paintings that I have painted during the Cover-19 Pandemic since March 13, 2020 will be featured in a show hosted by The Dutch Art Gallery.  The gallery owners have taken my paintings and are in the process of custom framing them for the show.  It's exciting to see my paintings at the gallery, all framed up and hanging on the wall.  More info to come on the show...as I continue to paint during this time of social distancing.  Thanks for looking at my blog, Kay

Oh Sunny Day

Oh Sunny Day
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Panel
Contemporary Still Life
This big bunch of sunflowers were inspired by a photo I took about 15 years ago...and I finally got around to painting them!  We were in Fayetteville, Arkansas on a clear bright Saturday morning walking through the Farmer's Market.  I loved the irregular shapes, the shadows and the fullness of this batch of sunflowers.  And it was so sunny!  Here's the photo that I took.
This painting, Oh Sunny Day is dry, has been varnished and framed up.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Sunflowers, Up North

Sunflowers, Up North
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Landscape
Photo Reference Credit:  Susan Warner

The reference photo that I used for this small painting was one that Susan Warner took on a walk in the country, close to Charlevoix, Michigan.  Here is her fabulous photograph:

Of course it struck a cord with me since we were unable to make our annual trip Up North.  Susan graciously let me paint from her photograph.  It was fun, and my intent was to capture the beautiful warm indian yellows and ochres in the sunflowers.  I think I am going to let the painting sit on my easel for a few days, and maybe make a couple of small adjustments, but I can't do that now since it is very wet.  Thanks for looking at my blog, Kay

Morning Sunrise

Morning Sunrise
12" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Seascape
Sunrise on Naxos was beautiful...and I never got tired of this view in the mornings.  The water was so blue, and the rocky shorelines and islands in the distance just took your breathe away.  I am letting this one sit on the easel for a couple of days, and maybe add a couple of highlights,  but for the most part, it is finished.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

Going Up

Going Up

16" x 8" Oil on RayMar Panel

Contemporary Abstract

Using oil paints with a brush, oil sticks, willow charcoal and a few tools I created this abstract with lots of color and shapes.  It's fun, and playful with lots of marks.  This painting left the studio over the weekend to a collector's house...for a trial run!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Floral Majesty

Floral Majesty
Thanks to LB, one of my collectors and blog readers for the suggestion on the name for this 12" x 12" oil painting.  Putting a title to each painting is part of the process, and it doesn't always come easy.  Thanks for the help, LB!

Spirited

Spirited
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
"Spirited" was painted with fresh, crisp juicy oils and my palette knife.  I chose beautiful blues, peaches, greens and yellows, carefully applying them so that I did not create the color MUD.  The movement and texture are right there, giving the painting personality and uniqueness.  Once this painting dries, I would like to put a beautiful pewter frame on it...but it is drying in the studio right now.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Iris Garden

Iris Garden
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Panel
Contemporary Floral
Have taken a short break from blogging due to technical difficulties with my computer.  Not sure if it is fixed, but I have been painting in the studio as well as working on a home project during the pandemic.  I continue to stay at home or in the studio.  With this panel I was pushing the colors in what I considered a lavender and green photograph, adding different shades of greens, blues and purples, with pops of orange and turqoise.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay
