Far Away

Far Away
8" x 16" Oil on Panel
Contemporary Landscape/Palette Knife Painting
This panel was a floral--- and a wiper.   I decided to use my leftover paints from another painting on this small panel.  The texture is so thick that you want to touch it!  This one is drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my art.  Stay safe.  Kay

Dwell

Dwell
18" x 18" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Nest Series
I finished this palette knife painting yesterday in the studio.  It had been in the works for a couple of months.  I had piles and piles of mixed oils on my palette.  Mixing paints is a really fun thing to do, and I usually mix a wide range of colors all at once.  Once my piles of oils are ready I can use my palette knifes, brushes and tools to apply the paint. This one has lots of texture!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Colors of the Day

Colors of the Day
12" x 16" Oil on Museum Quality Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I had originally worked on a floral still life---vertical format.  When that didn't work for me, I scraped the panel and turned the canvas horizontally.  Of course I had huge piles of paint on my palette after finishing "Cactus Patch", so I got out my favorite palette knife and went to work.  Thick layers of paint overlap each other.  This painting is drying in the studio.  I did throw in some impasto to expedite the drying process.  Thanks for looking at my blog..Kay

Cactus Patch

Cactus Patch
24" X 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape
Reference Photo Credit:  Selena Dixon
This cacti painting is finished!  I used Selena's photo from a a cactus patch located in Austin.  I veered away from the photo once I had my large shapes in, changing the background and adding color.  If you look closely, you can see I added violets, reds, magentas and turqoise to the painting to jazz it up.  This painting is drying in the studio, and the sides of the gallery wrap canvas are painted a medium portland grey.  Thanks for looking...Kay

Colour My World

Color My World
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape
I framed this palette knife painting and it is hanging in the studio.  I have had quite a few comments about the color palette I used, along with the movement and texture in the painting.  I may take it home to enjoy now that it has a handsome frame on it.  I have been working in the studio and soaking up our sunshine, and obeying the "stay in shelter" rules we have in Dallas.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

On my easel...

I started a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas by toning it with magenta and diox.  Then I started drawing the big shapes.  I am using a photo taken by one of my studio mates as a reference/jumping off place.  In the second photo you can see that I was working on my darkest darks....getting them dark.  In the third photo I started defining the shapes and finished the background with scribbles and calligraphy.  Hoping to put the flowers and needles in today.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

It's a Wiper.

I spent all afternoon locked up in the studio, with a new painting that went bad.  Here's photos of my progress.  In the end, I wiped it. I would like to blame the wiper on the Coronavirus, but that's not the case, I over-painted it.  It just wasn't working...today is a new day, and I hope my easel is friendly to me.  Have a good day --- we are under a "stay in shelter" rule in Dallas.  Kay

Picnic

Picnic
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
There is an painting underneath this one...I believe it was called "Pink".  I took a large brush and started painting large shapes.  Soon I found a picnic tablecloth, with bowls of fruit.  I simplified all the elements of the painting, and experimented with some unusual color combinations.  This painting is all framed up in a silver contemporary frame.  Contact Kay for more information.  Thanks for looking at my blog....KMW

From The Porch

From The Porch
6" x 8" Oil on Canvas
Plein Air Painting
Here's a quick plein air study that I did last summer on the porch of the cottage Up North.  I am tired of all the rainy weather, and this painting makes me eager for summertime porch living. I will be painting in the studio today with another crummy day of social distancing.  Have an artful day...Kay

Oh Sunny Day

Oh Sunny Day
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Panel
Contemporary Still Life
This big bunch of sunflowers were inspired by a photo I took about 15 years ago...and I finally got around to painting them!  We were in Fayetteville, Arkansas on a clear bright Saturday morning walking through the Farmer's Market.  I loved the irregular shapes, the shadows and the fullness of this batch of sunflowers.  And it was so sunny!  Here's the photo that I took.
This painting, Oh Sunny Day is drying in the studio.  It will need a frame on it, and then it will be ready for a new home!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Sun, Sand, and the Rock

Sun, Sand, and the Rock
20" x 24" Oil on Cotton Panel
Contemporary Seascape
This painting has a beautiful pewter/champaign frame on it, and is ready for a new home.  This rock is Up North and recognizable to many who frequent the beach on Lake Charlevoix each summer.  The rock has texture since it was painted with heavy oils and a palette knife.  In contrast, the sand on the beach is smooth and colorful.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  Kay

Abstract In Orange - Sold

Abstract in Orange
SOLD!
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Abstract
I love the way the collector framed up this painting....and it now has a permanent home in Dallas.  I will try to get a good photo of this one, as it was framed up for a clean, contemporary look.

More paintings are on the easel...they are all in a very unfinished, and not sure what will happen in the  next stage.  It will be a good day in the studio since it is raining cats and dogs. Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

These Days

These Days
Contemporary Abstract
Oil, Charcoal and Oil Bars on Canvas
Approximately 50" x 50" on Unstretched Canvas
These days I am into abstracts, starting with what I call a roadmap.  I draw, paint and then scrape away the oils, and do all again.  I mixed my colors and mixed more colors, and my piles of oil overlapped...so that they are harmonious. I did not plan anything, it all happened and the prussian blue lines/vase was put in at the very end...so now I have an abstract floral.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  KMW
