I finished this palette knife painting yesterday in the studio.  It had been in the works for a couple of months.  I had piles and piles of mixed oils on my palette.  Mixing paints is a really fun thing to do, and I usually mix a wide range of colors all at once.  Once my piles of oils are ready I can use my palette knifes, brushes and tools to apply the paint. Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

Here's a few photos of the progress on this canvas.  This was a fun painting for me, as I had not painted a bird's nest in years.  I am letting it sit at the studio and giving my eye a chance to figure out if it needs anything else.  I started with my transparent and a large squeegee, spreading the paint and getting the darks in.  I used a palette knife and a wide bright brush when it came to the feathers, leaves and twigs and everything that makes up the nest.

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

Empty Nest Waiting is framed up and hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  I used a wide brush and my palette knife to create this contemporary nest painting. You can see the wide brushstrokes in the background...I didn't get fussy with it.  I painted it, and left the paint so that the brush strokes were visible.  The sticks and twigs of the nest are thick and textured.  Thanks for looking at this blog.....Kay
