I finished this palette knife painting yesterday in the studio.  It had been in the works for a couple of months.  I had piles and piles of mixed oils on my palette.  Mixing paints is a really fun thing to do, and I usually mix a wide range of colors all at once.  Once my piles of oils are ready I can use my palette knifes, brushes and tools to apply the paint. Here's a few Itty Bitty (3" x 3" x 3/4") Nests.

They are all on my easel, and are drying, awaiting to be varnished.

These small nests were fun to paint, and took about eight stages, allowing

the paint to dry after each application of paint.  I used brushes, rubber clay

tools, and palette knives.  I have a BIG canvas on the easel, and it is almost

Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

Here's a few photos of the progress on this canvas.  This was a fun painting for me, as I had not painted a bird's nest in years.  I am letting it sit at the studio and giving my eye a chance to figure out if it needs anything else.  I started with my transparent and a large squeegee, spreading the paint and getting the darks in.  I used a palette knife and a wide bright brush when it came to the feathers, leaves and twigs and everything that makes up the nest.
