I used brushes and palette knives to apply the thick juicy oils. On the vase, I carved out the paint to make the pattern play. I put the vase on a table, added some fallen leaves and petals. When I started this painting, I had a beautiful fresh arrangement of flowers from my florist. Once they died, I used a photograph as reference, and added more petals to the composition. The vase is interesting, and was sitting around the studio holding pencils and brushes. It started out with a fresh floral arrangement from my local florist in a beautiful antique silver champagne bucket. I did not like the composition I had drawn out on a canvas, so I decided to look at the arrangement from a bird's eye view. I spotted this egret standing in the reeds along the shoreline. And loved how he is tucked away in the dense growth with the lake in the distance. I painted this one in the studio, and used my artistic license to add color to the reeds. It took several sessions to paint, as I needed the layers of oil to dry before I applied more paint...not wanting to create mud. This painting is drying in the studio.
