This large canvas is very wet.  I have been pushing and pulling the oils for a couple of days.  I will take a few days to let it dry and make some changes.  It started out as a landscape, with colorful fields of flowers.  More studio time today...Kay Wyne

Farewell by Kay Wyne

Farewell
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
This palette knife painting is drying in the studio.  The paint was applied in layers with a knife, making the paint very thick and textural.  These flowers have subtle color changes, as I mixed and mixed piles of paint before I began this painting.  There is an underpainting...and some turquoise, red, and peach are peaking through to give it some unexpected pops of color.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this painting.  Thanks, KMW

Year of the Rooster by Kay Wyne

Year of the Rooster
5" x 5" Oil on Panel
Palette Knife Painting
This little panel has color and texture applied with the palette knife.  I think it would of been easier for me to paint this rooster on a 5' x 5' canvas instead of this teeny tiny panel.  He's drying in the studio...contact Kay Wyne for more info on this small painting.  Thanks, KMW

Bad Day At The Lipstick Counter

Bad Day At The Lipstick Counter
Collaboration by Sharon Hodges and Kay Wyne
36" x 36" Mixed Media on Gallery Wrap Canvas

This canvas has been through a lot.  It started out with ink, acrylic and paper on canvas.  It was Kay's canvas for a couple of years, then Sharon picked it out of the "Bad Art Party" pile and worked on it.  I had given up on this canvas...but Sharon saw something interesting.  It is full of color, texture and interesting layers of shapes and lines-and very abstract.

The original plan was to paint an elephant.  The elephant turned into a large blooming iris that was very abstract.  Now there is a face with the rather large lips, jewelry, hands and different shapes painted on the textured surface.  So after the charcoal, ink, watercolor, acrylic, paper, oil, crayon, oil sticks this collaborative painting is completed.  You can see many things in the drawings.  It's quite amusing and fun to view.  It is drying in the studio.  It will be available for sale once the sides are painted and dry.  No frame needed.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay Wyne

Dusty Roses by Kay Wyne

Dusty Roses
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Soft pinks, greys, seafood green and touches of white were applied with the palette knife to create this still life painting.  My colors are all on the "dirty" side, and they are harmonious because they were all mixed together and painted in one sitting.  The background is soft and uncomplicated with the vase and flowers full of movement and texture.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary still life painting.  Thanks, Kay

Sunflowers, Hydrangeas and Grapes: A Still Life

Sunflowers, Hydrangeas and Grapes:  A Still Life
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
This still life was set up in the studio a few months ago.  I personally think it is interesting, busy and colorful...and it was fun to paint!  Obviously there is a lot going on, with 8 or 9 vases, 2 candlesticks, sunflowers, hydrangeas, grapes, an orange, leaves, 5 or 6 different fabrics, weeds, greenery, and just a lot of stuff.  The textures are wonderful...silver, ceramic, dried weeds, soft fabric, and I think there was a dead rat in there somewhere.  It was put together by Sharon, and everyone has been asked to paint it...or at least parts of it.
Here's my view of the set-up from my easel.  This painting is currently hanging at
Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.
Thanks for looking at my art posted here...Kay Wyne

Shea Baby by Kay Wyne

Shea Baby
30" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Labs are great dogs, and I wanted to catch Shea's personality on canvas.  She was full of energy, and always ready to play catch with a tennis ball.  The brushstrokes are bold, colorful and wide.  I wanted to capture the spirit of her personality on canvas.  When I see this painting hanging, it makes me smile and reminds me of all the labs we have had in our family.  Shea is available for sale...contact Kay Wyne for more information on this painting.  Thanks, KMW

On My Easel....

On My Easel
I was in the studio yesterday playing around on a 40" x 40" canvas.  I had just looked through my photographs and saw a beautiful strand of red chili peppers from Santa Fe, and some interesting buckets of flowers from a Farmer's Market in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  I thought I would somehow merge the two images on my canvas.  I was using left-over paints from a nautical painting, and scrubbed in some loose colors and shapes.  There's plenty of work to be done here....Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay Wyne

"Herself At The Landing" by Kay Wyne

"Herself At The Landing"
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting was inspired from an evening dinner at The Landing in Ironton, Michigan with my husband, John last July.  We were eating and this really cool boat (which we had seen from a distance on Lake Charlevoix earlier in the evening) pulls up to the dock.  It was our last day of our Up North vacation, and we were thrilled to meet Jim, the owner of "Herself".  We got a personal tour and after that, I had to paint her.  I wanted to paint the spirit and feeling that we had while watching her in the lake.
Starting with a toned canvas, the 24" x 24" Gallery Wrap Canvas is ready for some drawing.  I believe that I used a scarlet red diluted with Gamsol.
Figuring out my horizon line and putting in the dock, as it will anchor the painting.
I took a three month break from the painting at this stage.  I lost my interest and wasn't sure where the painting was going, so I moved on to some other paintings.  Getting my darkest darks in on the water.  I used a palette knife to apply and move the thick oils around.
Back at it, and I am using a photograph that I took last summer for reference.
Had to add the Michigan St. flag, the American flag, and some pops of color, using a filbert and bright brushes.  I loved the outdoor lights on the dock and outside eating area...so I added lights in the painting.  "Herself" is drying on my easel at the studio...I hope you enjoyed seeing the process I went through.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this nautical painting.  Kay

Windy December by Kay Wyne

Windy December - Plein Air
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape of White Rock Lake
This was a memorable but cold and windy day at the lake.  I was with a group of artists painting.  The wind was the biggest challenge of the day.  I had to paint fast.  I started with a brush, but ended up scraping the panel and staring all over with the palette knife.  This painting is hanging in my house and I have to smile when I look at it...the painting experience was one that I will not forget!  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Colors of Seabrook by Kay Wyne

Colors of Seabrook
6" x 6" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape/Palette Knife Painting
I am working on some seascape/beach/boating paintings in the studio, and with the cold winter weather, I am wishing I was at Seabrook Island---sitting on the beach.  This small plein air painting was all about getting the colors of the beach day.  Part of painting is getting the feeling or the mood of the day on the canvas.  It was a clear, warm day at the beach, and I can remember it well, especially on this cold January day.  I have several beach scenes that are available for purchase.  Contact ME for more info.  Thanks, KMW

Farewell by Kay Wyne

Farewell
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Piles of oil paint were on my palette, and with one palette knife I covered the canvas with a baker's dozen of roses.  It felt great to be back into the studio after a three week break.  I mixed my colors so that every layer of paint would be in harmony with the next layer.  There are small specs of rose, red, and turquoise spicing up the painting, but for the most part greys, lavenders and greens, and naples yellow dominate.  Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay
