A Day In The Life

Contemporary Floral Still Life
This painting now has it's forever home in Dallas.  I was thrilled to learn that Dutch Art Gallery in sold this bold and beautiful painting.  This is one of the first ones that I experimented with painting a blue vase, and have been working on a series of still lifes that have blue and white vases.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  Contact ME with any questions or comments.  Thank you, Kay

Oh Happy Day!

Oh Happy Day!
18" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life Painting
This painting is one of my favorites, because I was so happy when I painted it, and it just flowed onto the canvas.  I used a medium size palette knife to push and pull the paint.  The colors are harmonious because they were all mixed and mixed and mixed together.  Thanks for looking at this blog. Kay

Sun, Sand, and the Rock

Sun, Sand, And The Rock
20" x 24" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
The rolling clouds are moving fast over this beach scene.  The wind is tossing the tall grass at the edge of the water.  The warm sand is so inviting, and The Rock is familiar to all who spend time on the beach at Sequanota.  This painting needs a frame, and is ready for a new home.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting, or any of the other paintings posted on my blog.  Thanks for looking!  KMW

Wheat Fields

Wheat Fields
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
A big sky with fast moving clouds and a colorful wheat field is my subject matter for this canvas.  Using a wide flat brush I built up the paint on the clouds, giving them some shape and movement.  The tall grass has reflections of the sky painted in it.  It is ready to hang, as the sides of the canvas are painted and framing is optional.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking...KMW

Maid-Rite Memories

Maid-Rite Memories
20" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
Maid-Rite is midwestern burger joint...and there once was a Maid-Rite on the main street in my hometown of Macomb, Illinois.  Several years ago John and I were visiting Macomb, and I took photos of the old building.  It was in bad shape, with broken glass, pealing paint, holes in the roof --- and has been demolished.  It had a lot of character, and everyone who has ever eaten at the Maid-Rite has those memories.  Since we will be returning to Macomb soon, I thought painting the iconic Maid-Rite establishment was appropriate!  I wanted to capture the hometown feel of walking down Jackson Street looking up at the EAT sign.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting!  Have an artful day...KMW

Flower Power

Flower Power
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Painting
A visit to the Dallas Arboretum gave me all the inspiration I needed for this canvas.  I decided that I needed to tone my canvas with a diluted Permanent Rose, then I was ready to start drawing on the canvas.  I used raw umber, olive green and violet to place the flowers and lay-out my road map.

I started with my transparent oils and put a couple of layers on, getting my dioxazine violet,  magenta, olive green, and permanent rose.  The background fades and is somewhat out of focus to create some distance on the canvas.  I mixed up about six different piles of greens, starting with sap, olive, and adding cad yellow and ice blue to get a good range of shades.  I put in the jonquils last because they were opaque, and I did not want to mix my transparent and opaques.  I hope that the viewer has a sense of the beauty and powerful color that I witnessed at the Arboretum.

Dallas Days

Dallas Days
36" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Cityscape
Inspired by a plein air experience at White Rock Lake, I decided that I would go with a large canvas --- 36" x 48" in the studio.  The subject matter was the same, with the Dallas skyline in the background, White Rock Lake and the tall grass on the hill in the foreground. Wide brushstrokes and palette knife work were used to create this cityscape.  Currently it is hanging at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks for looking at this blog!  KMW

Peonies, Fruit and Fabric

Peonies, Fruit and Fabric
24" x 30" Oil on Canvas Panel
Contemporary Still Life Painting
This colorful still life is framed in a beautiful gold frame.  When I painted this, I was focusing on the light source and wanted to get the dramatic shadows painted in.  My favorite part of the painting is the fruit and the edges of the petals on the peonies.  I was letting my brush dance around, giving the petals a playful, loose look.  The apples were painted in simple strokes, with a wide bright brush.  This painting is available...contact Kay for more info.  Have a great day...KMW

Just A Memory

Just A Memory
8" x 8" x 2" Oil on Cradleboard
Contemporary Abstract Still Life
I was painting from memory, and going abstract on this panel.  I wanted to get the colors right, and big blocks of shapes.  This is a floral, but in a very abstract way.  You might see something else.  I had fun painting it, and that's important!  Contact Kay for more info on this painting or any other paintings on my blog.  Stay cool.  I will be in the studio avoiding the brutal Texas heat!  Thanks for looking, KMW

Colors of Cacti

Colors of Cacti
8" x 8" x 2" Oil on Cradleboard
Contemporary Floral
The cacti in downtown Dallas are unbelievable when you look at the color they produce.  John was downtown a few weeks ago and took a picture of this blooming flower on a rather large prickly pear cactus.  I really enjoyed painting this small panel.  Thanks for looking at my blog, and be sure to contact Kay with any questions/comments.  Kay

Cotton Candy

Cotton Candy
40" x 40" Oil, Oil Bar and Charcoal on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
This large canvas went through a lot of changes over the past week...Layers of drawings, brushwork and scraping finally got me to the place where I felt like this abstract was finished. It's drying in the studio, with the sides of the canvas painted a dark vulcan grey.  (Framing is optional....it's wired, and ready to hang!)  The spice of turquoise offsets the muted pinks, whites and greys.  When you look up close you can see drawings in charcoal that come and go.  I named this abstract Cotton Candy because it of the shades of pink...and it was so much fun to create!  Thanks for looking at my blog..Kay

Tight Bunch

Contemporary Still Life Painting
This painting is sold, but I was revisiting it, as there are several characteristics that I like.  The looseness, the color palette, the brush strokes all make "Tight Bunch" interesting.

SOLD
8" x 8" x 2" Oil on Cradleboard
Contemporary Still Life
I was painting away over the weekend and in talking to Lee Small of Lee Small Fine Art, and I showed her this small still life that I was working on.  Lee sold "Perfect Peonies" before I was finished!  Here is a pic of the completed painting, and once it dries and is varnished, it travels to San Francisco to live in it's forever home!  My reference photo was taken about ten years ago when my daughter Lindsay graduated from college.  Thanks for looking at my blog...have an artful day.  Feel free to contact me with any comments or questions.  Kay

Blue Vase - Sold!

Blue Vase
Sold
Oil on Arches Oil Paper 22" x 30"
Contemporary Still Life/Abstract
Using a rubber clay tool, a wipe-out tool, brushes and palette knives I pushed the paint around on the paper.  The paper is has different qualities than canvas or linen.  It seems to soak up the oils immediately, not allowing me to play with the paint.  I left a one and half inch border of white paper.  This piece was custom framed and sold at Dutch Art Gallery.  A big thank you to owner Pam Massar for framing, hanging and selling this unique piece of art.  Kay

Abstract In Orange

Abstract in Orange
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Abstract
I started with shapes and colors, and now I have floral abstract.  I normally paint abstracts on large surfaces---so painting this small one was different for me.  When I left this painting yesterday, I thought it was finished, but I may add some lines and drawing on it.  Yesterday was a fun day with an almost full studio, and working at my easel with friends is just the best.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay
