Sunflower Power

Sunflower Power
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Still Life
As I was playing around with the beautiful sunflowers I purchased from T.J., my eye zoomed in and I did a quick 90 minute painting.  When I paint quickly without any fussiness, my paintings are loose and free.  "Sunflower Power" is a good example of that.  These five flowers were so much fun to paint!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Have an artful day.  Kay

Cactus Patch

Cactus Patch
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral
All framed up and hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas, "Cactus Patch" is a handsome painting.  The photograph I used (thanks to one of my studio mates) was the front yard of an old house in Austin, Texas.  I purposefully left out the house so that I could concentrate of the blooms on the massive prickly pear.  Contact the gallery for more info!  Thanks for looking, Kay.

Untitled Floral

Contemporary Floral Still Life
Untitled
Limited Palette:  Cad Red Med., Cerulean, Cad Yellow Med., and Titanium
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
This is the third painting that I have painted, in a very different color palette that I normally use.  It was interesting, and although I wanted to reach for some other colors, I found myself mixing and mixing interesting combinations.  The colors are harmonious and work well together.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  I hope to be in the studio today working on a large canvas.  Kay

Heavy Dose of Sunshine

Heavy Dose of Sunshine
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Floral Still Life...currently on my easel.
I have been working on this still life off and on in the studio.  I wanted to paint something just for the sake of painting...and I went back to using a full palette of paints.  I had missed painting with Indian Yellow, Olive, and Ice Blue.  So I painted a handful of sunflowers in a ceramic vase.  This painting is drying in the studio, and is looking for a new home.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  KMW

Playing with a Limited Palette

Three florals, each 12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
(I need to title them!)
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Here are three paintings with the same composition and subject matter, but each with a different color scheme on the limited palette.  Each limited palette consisted of three colors and white.  It's amazing what colors you can get with mixing three colors and white.  I learned a lot with this experiment, and pushed myself to paint with some colors that are not in my daily palette.  Clearly, the colors are harmonious in each painting.  If I had to pick the color palette that I am most comfortable with, it would be the third one, consisting of Alizarin, Ultramarine, Cad Yellow Med and Titanium.

I would encourage anyone who paints to paint with a limited palette and discover what colors can be made with three colors.  It's amazing.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Contact Kay with any questions or comments.

Mixing It Up

Mixing It Up
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral
One of my studio mates brought in photograph that we used as a starting point for a paint-along.  I put a self-imposed challenge on this painting, using only three colors and a tube of white.  Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson and Cad Yellow along with Titanium White were my colors of choice.  I mixed and mixed my colors...a good lesson on color theory, and mixed the bouquet up, adding my own petals, leaves and berries.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Contact Kay with any questions or comments on this fun floral.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  KMW
