Tow Truck

This is a 9" x 12" oil painting, painted from a photo I took in Salado, Texas. We were eating lunch at the local BBQ joint, and this truck was parked in a front yard across the street. We all thought it had alot of character. Actually, the whole town has alot of character. This is my second painting of an old truck, and I must say it is not getting easier. The next truck I paint is going to be on a larger canvas...I have a photo of an old truck in Madrid, New Mexico that I want to start today. This painting is framed and hanging up at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas. If you have time, please go see the show. Thanks for viewing my blog!

On the easel...

Yesterday I painted...started this painting of the Golden Gate Bridge. I was using a photograph John Wyne took about a year ago. The paint is on very thick. I have to put some more shadows and highlights in, along with the cables. I wasn't sure that I had the right orange-red color on the bridge, so I came home from the studio and researched it. Sherwin Williams #6328 is the color on the bridge, so I will stop at a Sherwin Williams and pick up a paint chip. The official color name is Fireweed. We have great memories from that California trip a year ago...makes me want to go back. I can't wait to finish this one up. Maybe my post tomorrow will be the finished painting!
This painting --- along with many others will be on display at the 7th Annual Cedars Open Studio Tour this Saturday, Nov 21, 10-6. If you are in Dallas, come start the tour at Studio Art and Soul, 1505 Beaumont, Dallas 75215. Lots of talented artists will have their work on display!

Santa Fe, Madrid & Chimayo New Mexico

Little chapel located way out in the country...on an old western movie set.
Chimayo....the little chapel with so much history.
Driving to Madrid, this old rusty truck has seen better days. It should be great subject matter for a painting!
The Plaza in Santa Fe...people were selling jewelry and art on the sidewalk.

We are back! I did not want to post all 314 photos that I took over the weekend...but here are a few. John and I were able to do everything on our to-do list, and more. Canyon Road was fabulous, the Friday Night Gallery Walk was fun. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was very interesting, as was the Capital Art Collection, and all of the galleries we hit. John even found the Eaves Western Movie Set located somewhere on a country road between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. El Santuario de Chimayo is such a special place...holy dirt and all. Now that we are back in Dallas, I can't wait to get in the studio. New Mexico is so neat and inspirational!

Texas Star

Texas Star
This contemporary oil painting is on a 16" x 16" canvas. Sides are painted, but a frame would be very handsome on this painting. Years ago John and I bought some iron architectural elements from an old man at Canton Trade Days. We painted them and hung them on the brick wall on the patio. They are quite interesting, and although they must have an official name, I call then Texas Stars. I haven't signed this painting yet, but it is finished. Almost. I hope to get to the studio today and put finishing touches on several paintings. John and I are off to Santa Fe for a few days of touring around New Mexico. The weather will be great...no rain in the forecast. I will be back next week --- hopefully with some new photographs and ideas for paintings. Have a good weekend!!!

Horizon Series: Abstract 1027

Horizon Series: Abstract 1027
Oil on 22" x 30" Gallery Wrap Canvas
When I started this painting, I was thinking of painting abstract circles...but after one day of painting, I changed my mind and went in another direction. After day one, the canvas composition changed...and I put a horizon line it in, and took out the circles. It was too complicated, so I painted out everything. I also changed my color palette. Some of the colors were random, like the cad yellow and paynes gray. I wasn't happy with the color combination. I put down the brush and picked up the palette knife. The layers of paint went on...I have not signed this painting, but it could be finished. I am taking a few days to let it sit before I sign it.
This contemporary abstract is on gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is needed. It is ready to hang once I sign and make a few minor changes.

I did not get to paint yesterday...but had a good day walking the barns and fields of Canton, Texas at First Monday Trade Days. It was great weather, good shopping. After all the crummy wet weather we have had, it was nice to be out in the sunshine. Looks like another great sunny day in Dallas. I can't beleive it is November!!!
