Color My Trees

Color My Trees
I had to paint a contemporary oil painting with color today. Lots of bright, vibrant color. I needed to put the paint on with thick broad strokes and the palette knife. I am going to let this one sit on my easel for several days and dry. I might go back in and paint some more.....not sure. It is on a gallery wrap canvas. I worked on several pieces at the studio today...had a great day painting with Sharon, Grant and Carol. It was exstremely hot in Dallas today, so painting and staying inside was just what I needed. Thanks for viewing this blog. Kay

Horizon Series: Abstract 1023
18" x 18" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Oil Paint and Oil Stick
This abstract is painted with my oil paints, and then I went in with oil pastels in a stick---they are different, and fun to experiment with. There are layers of paint and color....applied with brush and palette knife. I wanted to create movement and excitement with the shapes and colors. Thanks for viewing this blog!!!

Time to Cowboy Up

Time to Cowboy Up
Oil on 48" x 24" Gallery Wrap Canvas
$900
I finally finished this contemporary cowboy...my motivation to complete it was our show last night at The Wine Therapist. So I went to the studio early yesterday and worked on him. I had four pieces hanging at the show, but there was some great wall space on the outdoor patio area, and this piece looks really good on the barn-looking wall. This painting has changed so much since I started it..... it has been through alot, just like a cowboy. My reference for Time to Cowboy Up was my nephew Casey Settles...trying to put his chaps on for a horse show. I wanted to do more with the fringe, but was afraid that I might over-paint it. I left the chaps with some wide brush strokes...did not want to paint it all in. Thanks to everyone who attend last night's reception. We had a huge turn-out and we sold some art! The performance by David Carr, Jr. was great. Thanks for viewing this blog!!! Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing this painting. Kay@kwyne.com

Koi Pond

Koi Pond
24" x 30"
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This is my first koi painting...I layered and layered the paint on, and had the gold/orange koi way too light. I was happy with the colors in the white/gray koi, but not the golden ones. I enjoyed the first day on this painting, and struggled with the days following. I know the water in the koi pond needs to be greener, but I don't like painting green very well, so I just went with what I wanted on the water. I hope to get some better reference photographs when the sun comes out and it warms up in Dallas. More koi paintings in the future. Today I will hit the studio with some new blank canvas....hoping that my brushes are kind to me. Have a good Monday! Thanks for viewing this blog!

Martin Ranch Cow

Martin Ranch Cow
Oil on 12" x 12" Gallery Wrap Canvas
This lovely cow lives at the Martin Ranch in South Texas, near Columbus. Wait a minute, I think it is the Martin Farm. Anyway, last March the artists at Studio Art and Soul and a few other creative individuals went to John Martin's place (notice I did not say Ranch or Farm because I am not sure what it is.) I took alot of photos of cows. I finally finished this one today. Signed it. It has been in the works for about 6 months....but I got bored with her, and put her away for months. Now she is out!!!!

As my son, Blake was driving the Polaris around in the pasture, I was taking pics of these creatures. This one just stared at me. I have yet to name her, so I am open to any suggestions. My first cow I painted was Elsie, so that name is out. I was thinking about Harriett because she had big, hairy eye brows and eye lashes.

Cup Cake

Here's another little cup cake painting....5" x 5" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas. I have finished my cup cakes....about five new ones. I started an abstract yesterday, changed the direction that I am going on it today. Changed colors, shapes and I am liking it better. I also put finishing touches on a cow that I started last March after a trip to the Hill Country. We had a full studio today...everyone except Linda was there. We planned for the Open Studio Tour, and celebrated Suzy's Birthday. It was a good day. Thanks for visiting my blog!

Two Plus One

Two Plus One
Today’s painting is a 8” x 8” gallery wrap canvas. Oil of course. The title of the piece is “Two Plus One” and I painted it last Sunday. I was at the studio and was looking for something to paint, and looked in the refrigerator, and found two pears and two apples. I fooled around with them, working on a still life, and finally got a good pose for two pears and one apple. I always like using odd numbers…in groupings and collections. So, I painted away. I went into the studio on Monday, and needed to change something about one of the pears. I wasn’t sure what it was, so I went looking for the pears. Gone. I asked Sharon, who has originally purchased the fruit where MY pears were. She said that she had gotten hungry and ate them. So, I asked her what was wrong with my pear, we talked about it, and I made a few stroke adjustments, and signed the painting.

I should of painted the painting alla prima. If this term is new to you, alla prima painting would be started and finished in one painting session, but the term is also more loosely applied to any painting done in a direct, expressive style, with minimal preparation. Alla prima comes from Italian, literally meaning "at once". The French term is premier coup. Famous painters who worked in an alla prima style are as diverse as Paul Cezanne, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Caravaggio, Hieronymus Bosch, and Frans Hals.

I hope to go to the studio today and paint alla prima. We’ll see how it goes. Have an artful day! Thanks for viewing my blog.

Rodeo Cowboy

Rodeo Cowboy
I think this painting is finished....or at least I signed it. I wanted to show the energy, movement and colorful excitement of the rodeo in this painting. It is on a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas, painted in oils. At the very start of this painting, the horse was standing. I changed the angle of the horse, and decided that it would be more interesting to have it kicking off the canvas. And moving, not standing. I will go back to the studio tomorrow and probably make a few minor changes and photograph it again. I liked the fringed on the chaps and the mane on the horse....seemed to get all tangled up in the ride. I thank you for viewing my blog, and welcome any comments on my latest painting!

On the easel...

On the easel...another painting that was started, and then left to sit a while.

Here is another painting that is sitting on my easel....unfinished. I need to really focus and add some shadows and detail on this one. I had taken a photo of the Lucky Dog hot dog stand in New Orleans....they were all over the city. This is on a 12" x 12" gallery wrap canvas....so it shouldn't take me too long to finish up. Maybe I will get to the studio this afternoon and tackle it!! Thanks for viewing my blog. Have an artful day!

p.s. Several of my friends have asked about the Cedars Open Studio Tour 2009. Mark your calendar----it will be Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. More information can be found at: www.cedarsopenstudios.com.

Mixed Media - Commission/Sold

Today's posting is a mixed media piece that is on a 12" x 12" gallery wrap canvas. It was a commission piece for a couple in Minnesota. I worked with Theresa, as she wanted something special to give her husband for their 25th Wedding Anniversary. She sent me an envelope of photos and momentos, and I put this together for them. Happy Anniversary to Scott & Theresa!
