Missed The Boat

Missed The Boat
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This colorful dinghy was aching to be painted when John and I came across it in a small fishing village in Maine.  It had lots of character, and was tied up to the rocky shoreline.  This small piece is framed in a dark mahogany frame, and is ready to find a new home.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks, KMW

Wheat Fields

Wheat Fields
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
A big sky with fast moving clouds and a colorful wheat field is my subject matter for this canvas.  Using a wide flat brush I built up the paint on the clouds, giving them some shape and movement.  The tall grass has reflections of the sky painted in it.  This painting has been excepted into the Master's of the Fall Juried Art Exhibit at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas.  Contact the gallery for more information.  Thanks, Kay Wyne

Tight Bunch by Kay Wyne

Tight Bunch
20" x 20" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
I picked up a couple of bunches of hydrangeas at Trader Joe's this week and set up a simple still life.  We were hosting Karen Blair - contemporary artist from Virginia, at the studio and this floral arrangement came in handy, as almost all the artists painted it.  I chose not to use any medium on this painting because I wanted a thick painterly look on the canvas.  It will take a long time for the oils to dry!  Here is a close-up:
Thanks for taking a peak at this painting.  "Tight Bunch" is drying at the studio, but will be looking for a new home in the near future.  Thanks, Kay

Grey Skies

Grey Skies
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape
Pushing myself to work with a different color palette, I wanted this landscape to have muted colors.  Not my usual colorful palette.  I mixed the greys, greens and browns into large piles.  The used my palette knife to apply the paint and move it around on the canvas.  The colors of the field transition softly into the wide open sky.  I see a storm coming along the horizon.  This painting is available for purchase.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.  Thanks, KMW

Bursting With Joy by Kay Wyne

Bursting With Joy
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Dramatic, colorful and loose describes this painting.  The bouquet was absolutely gorgeous.  I painted this very quickly during a demonstration.  I think I had a couple of hours, and was able to capture the feel of the arrangement.  This painting is available and looks great all framed up.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks so much....heading to the studio today for a workshop.  Can't wait!  Kay

Sunflowers Hydrangeas and Grapes: A Still Life

Sunflowers, Hydrangeas and Grapes:  A Still Life
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
This still life is the latest art challenge going on in the studio.  I personally think it is interesting, busy and colorful...and it was fun to paint!  Obviously there is a lot going on, with 8 or 9 vases, 2 candlesticks, sunflowers, hydrangeas, grapes, an orange, leaves, 5 or 6 different fabrics, weeds, greenery, and just a lot of stuff.  The textures are wonderful...silver, ceramic, dried weeds, soft fabric, and I think there was a dead rat in there somewhere.  It was put together by Sharon, and everyone has been asked to paint it...or at least parts of it.
Here's my view of the set-up from my easel.  This painting is drying now.
Thanks for looking at my art posted here...Kay Wyne

Row Boat

Row Boat
9" x 12" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
The subject matter is the boat, but the movement of the water and the reflection is just as important in this small painting.  Using a wide flat brush, and a variation of colors in the water I wanted to capture the reflection.  Thanks for looking at Row Boat....it is available for purchase.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks!  KMW

Blue Day by Kay Wyne

Blue Day
6" x 6" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Plein Air Painting
It was a pre-Matthew day on the beach at Seabrook.
Things were changing, the ocean was grey-blue, the
sky was turquoise blue.  As I painted the ocean, it
looked dark and angry.  The clouds were pulling apart
and the weather was changing quickly.  I had to paint
fast and furious as high tide was pushing me back on
the beach.  Thanks for visiting my blog....Kay

The Beach

The Beach
Pre-Matthew Plein Air Painting
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Here's another Seabrook Island painting that ended up being a palette knife.  I got to the beach and realized that I did not have any brushes or medium.  So by default, this seascape is a palette knife painting.  Here's what my set-up was like, with high tide approaching.
More paintings tomorrow...have a great day.  Kay

Seabrook Sand and Sky

Seabrook Sand and Sky
6" x 6" Oil on Panel
Plein Air Painting at Seabrook Island, SC
This is another pre-Matthew painting.  I wanted to catch the colors of the day and the vast beaches during low tide.  I got caught in high tide when painting one day...after that I checked the tide tables and was prepared for the fast rising water at the beach.  Thanks for looking at my blog...more studio painting today, as I am finishing up a still life challenge.  Thanks, Kay

Reflections of Turtle Creek
Sold
Plein Air Painting
Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
This palette knife/plein air painting sold last weekend.  I remember the day that I painted this...and my goal was to get the colors correct.  Greens are hard for me, and my least favorite color.  It was a good painting experience, and I learned a lot about greens.  I am glad that this painting will hang in a new collector's home.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay

Just For You - Sold

Just For You
Sold
10" x 10" Oil on Panel
Framed in a handsome mahogany moulding...This palette knife painting has a new home!  Thanks to two Dallas collectors who purchased this floral still life yesterday in the studio.  We had a good turn-out for the White Rock Open Studio Tour.  We have a painting challenge in the works, and I got a good start on it yesterday.
Here's the still life that Sharon set up.  Kind of busy, but beautiful.
I began scrubbing in shapes, and I see some changes that need to be made compositionally ...before I go any further.  So a little scraping and re-positioning of a few objects.  This is a 40" x 40" canvas, so I have plenty of space to make changes and add more stuff!  Thanks for looking at my art.  Kay

Seagrass & Sand

Seagrass & Sand
6" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
I was amazed at the seagrass on the coast of Seabrook Island.  I had to paint it, and I would of loved to painted larger, so this is a panel that I worked on and hope to take it into the studio to use as a color study.  We are back, and now we will watch Matthew from the afar.  The mandatory evacuation for the Carolina coast was just beginning as we were leaving.  As I unpack my painting suitcase, sand is everywhere...even in my paintings!  Thanks for looking at this blog...have an artful day!  Kay

Seabrook - En Plein Aire

Seabrook
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
En Plein Aire
As we evacuate the island of Seabrook on the coast of South Carolina, I am hoping to be home before evening.  The mandatory evacuation is affecting over 1 million people here in the Charleston area, with Hurricane Matthew heading to the east coast. After having 12 wonderful days of sunny beach, it is time to go home.  I was able to paint on the beach on a daily basis, and capture the rolling clouds, the beautiful sandy beaches, the seagrass, rolling tides, and amazing sunsets.  This painting isn't dry, and I hope that it makes the trip back to Dallas...Thanks for looking at this painting.  More plein are paintings to post!  Kay
