Seabrook Sand and Sky - Sold!

Seabrook Sand and Sky
Sold!
6" x 6" Oil on Panel
Plein Air Painting at Seabrook Island, SC
This painting sold this week at Dutch Art Gallery  I wanted to catch the colors of the day and the vast beaches during low tide.  I got caught in high tide when painting one day...after that I checked the tide tables and was prepared for the fast rising water at the beach.  Thanks for looking at my blog. Thanks, Kay

Making Memories

Making Memories

8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel

Contemporary Oil Painting

Our daughter, son in-law and family are at the beach, and I was looking through some photos they sent.  This one grabbed me, and I simplified the composition from the photo.  The waves were crashing into these two as they waded out into the water with nets, crabbing.  I was thinking that they would come home with lots of good memories...therefore, it was an easy one to title, "Making Memories".  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Beached ---- Sold!

Beached
SOLD!
12" x 12" Oil on Museum Quality Panel
Contemporary Landscape
This is my first piece that I painted when we returned from our fabulous trip to Greece.  John and I were walking along the beach on Naxos, and came across this old boat that was beached.  I immediately took a pic, and wanted to paint it.  The boat was cool--- it was colorful, weathered, and had lots of character.  I am thrilled that Lee Small found the perfect forever home for this painting!  Thank you, Lee!  Thanks for looking, KMW

Mikri Vigla

Mikri Vigla - Naxos
12" x 17" Oil on Canvas on Gatorboard/Framed
Contemporary Seascape/Greek Islands
While exploring the beaches on the island of Naxos, our group found a secluded beach that was stunning.  The water was ultramarine blue, then it turned turqoise --- the sand was warm and felt so good between our toes.  We fell in love with this beach, and returned to it several times, including one of the windiest days...we were protected in the cove from the strong gales.  I wanted to capture the color and beauty of this beach on canvas.  This painting has a beautiful dark mahogany frame with gold liner to finish it off!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Sun, Sand And The Rock

Sun, Sand, And The Rock
20" x 24" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
The rolling clouds are moving fast over this beach scene.  The wind is tossing the tall grass at the edge of the water.  The warm sand is so inviting, and The Rock is familiar to all who spend time on the beach at Sequanota.  This painting needs a frame, and is ready for a new home.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting, or any of the other paintings posted on my blog.  Thanks for looking!  KMW

Signs of Summer

Signs of Summer
16" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Seascape
I had a panel that I was ready to trash, and decided to turn the panel upside down and start something new.  No more boats on this painting!  I had lots of lavenders, greys, and flesh tones on my palette, so I decided I would paint the beach.  The seagrass (thinking of Seabrook Island) is shooting out of the sand---I wish I had used some impasto on the grass, as it will take a long time for the globs of paint to dry. Thanks for looking at my blog...I hope that you can feel the sand between your toes when you see this painting.  Thanks, KMW

Sun, Sand, and The Rock

Sun, Sand, and The Rock
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Seascape Painting
Here's a beachy painting that strikes a cord with all who have visited or spent anytime on the beach at Sequanota Club, located on the shores of Lake Charlevoix.  Northern Michigan is a wonderful summertime retreat, and we have many photos of family and friends on "The Rock".  I used a palette knife and built up the rock with lots of oil paint...so it will take a while for this to dry!  Contact Kay with any questions or comments on this contemporary seascape.  I can't wait to frame it up!  Thanks for looking, Kay

The Rock - Sold

The Rock
Sold
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
It's a good day when one of my paintings finds a new home.  That happened yesterday, when Lee Small of Lee Small Fine Art placed this contemporary seascape in a beautiful home in North Dallas.  I had the opportunity to see it in it's new home, and visit with the collector.  She collects work by Texas artists, and loves to know the background of the art and the artist.  Thanks for looking at my blog...have an artful day!  Kay

Colors of Seabrook by Kay Wyne

Colors of Seabrook
6" x 6" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Painting in plein air on the beach is a great experience.  Last year John and I were at Seabrook Island outside of Charleston and I had the opportunity to beach-it daily.  This small panel is in the studio, and I hope to paint a large canvas with this as guide on the color palette.  I put my brushes away for this painting, and used a palette knife.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Contact ME for more info on my paintings. The Rock by Kay Wyne

The Rock
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This beach scene is familiar to those who frequent Sequanota Club, located in Northern Michigan.  This massive rock has been on the beach and the anchor to many family photos throughout the years.  I wanted the rock to be the focal point of the painting, so I used impasto and a palette knife to achieve some interesting texture and shapes.  I had fun with the water, sand and grass using a wide bright and filbert.  This painting is drying in the studio...thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

On My Easel...

Beach scene
Here's the start of my beach painting.
The 40" x 40" canvas was toned with some magenta, transparent orange and cad yellow.  I wanted a thin wash to cover up the white canvas.  I started drawing the horizon line, the shoreline and some shapes for the rocks.  And the rock...
Starting to put in the sky and water.  I wanted to get the water color right...lots of violets and carribean, and cobalt.  I also started mixing some muddy greens, greys and browns for the sand.  I am not concerned about the big rock right now, as I plan on using a palette knife to paint it, one of the last things to paint on this canvas.
I have started moving the paint around, but also wanting some of the initial undertones to peak through.  Having the oranges, magentas and pinks show through will make this painting more exciting and vibrant. More painting in the studio today... Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Beyond Seabrook by Kay Wyne

Beyond Seabrook
8" x 8" Oil on Gessoed Panel
Contemporary Landscape
I used my plein air paintings as a guide on the color palette for this small panel.  I wish I had painted this one on a large canvas---36" x 36" or larger.  This painting is getting framed up at Dutch Art Gallery.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay Wyne
