Lickety Split

Lickety Split
48" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Equine Art
With a few details to go, a few strokes here
and there....it could be completed today.
I want to work on the eyes, and have a
critique on it at the studio.  It is always
good to have some input from other
artists.  I wanted the horses to be bold,
energetic and colorful with lots of
movement and personality.  My
reference photos for this painting was
from three different sources/photos that
I took at different times and locations.  The
background and foreground has changed
from the initial composition.  More work
in the studio today, as I am starting a
new series for 2014!

En Plein Air

En Plein Air....painting outside on the spot. Yesterday was a perfect day for it in Dallas. It was a warm, sunny November morning. I met Lynn, Jerry and Carolyn (new painting friends) at the stables and went exploring. The horses were beautiful, the peacocks were out and the location was amazing....right in the city of Dallas. I was set up here with my easel painting the stable and these two men who were deep into conversation. Bob and Tex. I also ran into Dianne Mildren and met Buckshot, her handsome horse. Dianne quickly pointed out to me that riding Buckshot is her passion, just as painting is mine. I hope to pull some great paintings from this little outing. It was a wonderful Monday morning!!! Thanks for looking at this blog, I hope to finish the painting today that I started at the stables.

Neck & Neck

Neck & Neck
Oil on 32" x 30" Gallery Wrap Canvas
This painting will go to The Wine Therapist Exhibit
(if it is dry enough!)
This painting is fast and furious...lots of color, engergy and movement on the canvas. I wanted the viewer to keep looking at the horses...trying to decide which one is in the lead. It is close. I just finished and signed it today. I hope to put it in Studio Art & Soul's upcoming show. More details on the artists' reception and show. I hope that you had an artful day....I did!

May 1, 2010 - Group Exhibit - Wine Therapist
Please join us at the Wine Therapist - 1810 Skillman St. @ Live Oak, Dallas, TX. Meet the artists May 1, 5-8pm with jazz saxophonist David Carr, Jr playing 5:30 - 7:30. Art will be on display from May 1, 2010 through June 11, 2010.

Dipped N Vip

Dipped N Vip
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
12" x 16"
This painting is dedicated to my nephew, Casey Settles. I used a 2008 photograph of him and Dipped N Vip (yes, that is the horse's name) as a reference for this contemporary oil painting. The brush strokes are loose and don't have much of detail. The photograph I was using was taken indoors, but I put Casey and the horse outdoors. I am told that Dipped N Vip is a very special horse, and it is owned by Black Hawk Community College, located in Illinois. He is very handsome and had great colors.

I started this painting last week, and to my surprise I was informed that Casey would be representing West Texas A & M in the Inter-Collegiate Horse Show and Regionals in Gainesville, Texas. Since he would be competing about an hour from Dallas, John, Lindsay and I went to the horse show last Saturday. That was a neat experience to see six schools compete, with the two top equestrian riders moving on to the Semi-Finals in Los Angeles, California. Congratulations to Casey....he placed second, and will be competing in LA!!!! "Whoop!", as my Aggie son would say!!!
