Yuzu
8" x 8" Oil on Panel
Contemporary Still Life
Day #2 of the Strada Easel Challenge
Thanks to one of my studio mates for lending me the bowl...and yuzu!  It made a perfect still life for the second day of the challenge.  I was able to complete this in one setting, about 2 hours.  Here is a pic of the set-up:
Got to get going on Day #3....Not sure what I will be painting!
Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Sunny Day

Sunny Day
16" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
I started with a photograph that I took last year in Greece of a food market, and zoomed in on a crate of lemons.  It was a sunny day, and the golden yellows were brilliant as I looked at the lemon harvest.  I had a good time at the easel painting this one, and I was thinking about starting a new series...I would have a good time going to the Dallas Farmers Market (if I practiced social distancing, of course) and picking out some fresh fruits or veggies to paint.   This painting is finished, and drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Dusty Roses by Kay Wyne

Dusty Roses
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Soft pinks, greys, seafoam green and touches of white were applied with the palette knife to create this still life painting.  My colors are all on the "dirty" side, and they are harmonious because they were all mixed together and painted in one sitting.  The background is soft and uncomplicated with the vase and flowers full of movement and texture.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary still life painting.  Thanks, Kay

Stop and Smell the Flowers by Kay Wyne

Stop and Smell the Flowers
Runner-up in the 2015 Catholic Foundation Plaza Arts Competition
Not For Sale

When I was painting this contemporary still life, I was thinking of the phrase, “Stop and Smell the Flowers”, which is the title of this painting.  I wanted to create a unique painting with the beautiful colors and interesting shapes in the arrangement that I had set up in the studio, and transfer them to the canvas.   There is something special about painting from life...it is so much better than painting from memory or even a photo.  Painting this floral arrangement from life gave me the opportunity to capture the true essence of the flowers.  I want the viewer to feel the fullness and freshness that I experienced while painting.  I used a palette knife and wide brush to apply the thick, juicy oils on the canvas.

I can't wait to see the winner of the Plaza Arts Competition in downtown Dallas...the unveiling of the art on the building will take place next month.  Congrats to the winner, Stuart Hausmann.

I am back in the studio getting ready for an exhibit in February, 2016...sounds like it is far away, but actually it is right around the corner.   I have several more florals on the easel, and working on some equine paintings.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay Wyne

Eat Your Veggies

Eat Your Veggies
6" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
This is from a painting challenge...Different Strokes from Different Folks Challenge was a photograph of a platter of summer vegetables. I painted my interpretation of the photograph using oil paints on a 6” x 8” cotton panel…lots of luscious oils layered on with brushes. It’s good to have a deadline on a project like this challenge…it pushes me a little bit to finish up a painting to submit. I never seem to have a problem starting a painting, but sometimes I am not motivated to work through a painting and complete it. I had a good time painting this challenge, and it is so much fun looking at the dozens of artists who have posted their work.   Just like we are all different, so is our artwork. We all see things differently, and paint them differently.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Mellow Yellow

Mellow Yellow
20" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Yesterday was a scraper day at the studio.  Nothing really worked well for me on my easel.  I will be working on something new today.  This painting is currently drying.  The palette knife was used on this panel, creating texture.  I used the side of the knife to fracture the paint and cut into it.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay

Peonies, Fruit and Fabric

Peonies, Fruit and Fabric
20" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
Framed in a simple gold but elegant frame, this still life painting is full of interesting flowers, ceramics, fabric and fruit.  The light hitting the peonies are as dramatic as the cast shadows.  I remember painting this...I thought the set-up was so beautiful.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

This floral still life has a great color palette.  The gray-blues and turqoise sets the rose and lavender flowers off.  This original oil would look great in a home or office.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Contemporary Floral Still Life

Contemporary Floral Still LIfe
Sold
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I was browsing through my files yesterday, and found the photograph I took of the floral arrangement that I used for reference on this painting.  I decided that I needed to paint it again, but with a softer color palette.  I believe that this painting lives in Memphis, TN.  More painting in the studio today....Kay

Cottage Still Life by Kay Wyne

Cottage Still Life
20" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Framed in a Dark Mahogany Moulding
This painting was painted in Colorado at a Don Sahli workshop.  It was an interesting arrangement...and because of the subject matter, it reminded John and I of the cottage in Michigan.  I loved the enamel pitcher, fruit, antique platter and dish towel it felt like I was pulling things from the cottage for the still life.  The light was bouncing off the ceramic jar and the the fruit.  The oils will take a long time to dry, since I used very little medium with the oils.  Thanks for looking at the art posted here....contact Kay if you have any questions or comments on the art posted here....thanks, Kay

Fickle by Kay Wyne

Fickle
14" x 11" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This abstract still life has sharp edges, bold colors and texture.  I used my palette knife on most of work, along with a few brushstrokes.  This small piece has painted edges, but would look great in a contemporary frame.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting.  Thanks, KMW

Still Life

Still Life
6" x 8" Oil on RayMar Panel
This is a still life that I painted several years ago....and below is a quick study still life that I did yesterday.  I was comparing the two and going over my notes from yesterday's class with Qiang Huang.  He is a fabulous artist, and a very good instructor.
Still Life in progress
9" x 12" Oil on RayMar Panel
Here is my set-up at the Qiang Huang workshop...The photo has glare on it, but you can see the progress.  Painting still life forces you to really focus on the set-up, the composition, the color relationships and lighting.  Qiang is very deliberate with his brush strokes.  He puts on stroke down and leaves it....and it is always the correct color and value.  More photos tomorrow after today's class.  We are having a blast of winter weather in Dallas...ice and snow and freezing temperatures.  It has made it hard to get to the workshop.  More tomorrow.  Thanks, Kay
