Itty Bitty Nests

Itty Bitty Series
Contemporary Nests
Oil on Cradleboard
Here's a few Itty Bitty (3" x 3" x 3/4") Nests.
They are all on my easel, and are drying, awaiting to be varnished.
These small nests were fun to paint, and took about eight stages, allowing
the paint to dry after each application of paint.  I used brushes, rubber clay
tools, and palette knives.  I have a BIG canvas on the easel, and it is almost
completed...Thanks for looking at my blog.  Have an artful day.

Cardinal Nest

Cardinal Nest
Oil on 11" x 14" Canvas
Another Nest Series Painting....Very wet, should be ready to frame soon. I finished the Cardinal Nest yesterday. The little tiny eggs are down deep in the nest that was in a bush in our backyard. We are watching the mama and papa Cardinal, and we think that they might be making another nest in another bush. These eggs are not whole...they were broken open and empty when we found them...I had to turn them over and position them so the broken side did not show. Thanks for viewing my blog...have an artful day!

On my easel....at Studio Art and Soul

Today, at the studio I was working on a still life. It took me a long time to set it up...I had not been in the studio since Tuesday, and I needed to get all the props out for the still life. (table, lights, box, fabric, the nest and eggs) Here is a pic of the canvas, on my easel. I got a good start, covering the canvas with plenty of paint.

Here is the set-up...a bird nest....next to my easel. I had a good time painting this afternoon. Karen and Carol were also at Studio Art and Soul.

Here is the nest. Actually, John Wyne watched two cardinals build this nest last week in our backyard. They were busy, and after a couple of days John noticed an egg. Then the next day, two eggs. After four days there were five small creamy turqoise eggs with brown speckles. Then to our surpise, all of the sudden there were empty eggs. We recovered the egg shells...evidently a squirrel, snake or cat got the eggs in the nest. We were shocked, and looked for the mama and papa, but never saw them. So, after about 5 days, I took the nest out of the bush. I love painting nests....so, here we go on a still life. I hope to return to the studio this weekend and finish this painting, putting some details on the eggs, darken the shadows, and add more twigs on the nest.
Thanks so much for visiting my blog...I hope that you have a fun and safe weekend!

Trinity River Nest

Trinity River Nest
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This contemporary oil painting is finished, signed and drying at the studio. I put some finishing touches on it yesterday, and it should be good and dry for the Texas Discovery Gardens Exhibit. I love to work on series of paintings, so I will be doing some more Nest Paintings for the exhibit. I was also able to almost complete the chocolate lab and landscape commission pieces. Thanks for viewing this blog, and I hope that you have an artful day!
