Sunny Day

Sunny Day
10" x 10" Oil and Silver Leaf on Cradleboard
Contemporary Floral
I finished this cradleboard in the studio, after applying layers and layers of paint.  It seems like the cradleboard or the silver leaf sucks up the paint, making me apply more and more thick oils.  This painting is drying in the studio, and it does have so other companion pieces, but they are not yet finished.  Thanks for looking at my blog...contact ME with any questions or comments.  Kay

Plentiful

Plentiful
12" x 12" Oil on Panel
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Just finished!  This panel has lots of paint and texture on it.  I used a filbert brush for most of this painting.  I love painting sunflowers because the petals flop and are irregular.  I thought this was a very pretty ceramic piece, and I liked it in the composition.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Contact ME for more info.  Thanks for looking at my art!  KMW

Wilted

Wilted
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
I think that sunflowers are interesting and beautiful, even after they have reached their peek and blooming.  I bought these at Trader Joe's, and I was able to paint from them for a couple of weeks!  I enjoyed painting them at all stages, and especially this wilted stage.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  KMW

Joyful

Joyful
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
I made up a quick still life setting in the studio with a handful of Trader Joe's sunflowers.  I set the timer, and allowed myself an hour to paint the petals.  I zoomed in on the arrangement and painted them in a horizontal format, which I think is interesting.  I liked the was each flower was flopping over the vase.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  Kay

Sunflower Power

Sunflower Power
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Still Life
As I was playing around with the beautiful sunflowers I purchased from T.J., my eye zoomed in and I did a quick 90 minute painting.  When I paint quickly without any fussiness, my paintings are loose and free.  "Sunflower Power" is a good example of that.  These five flowers were so much fun to paint!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Have an artful day.  Kay

Oh Sunny Day

Oh Sunny Day
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Panel
Contemporary Still Life
This big bunch of sunflowers were inspired by a photo I took about 15 years ago...and I finally got around to painting them!  We were in Fayetteville, Arkansas on a clear bright Saturday morning walking through the Farmer's Market.  I loved the irregular shapes, the shadows and the fullness of this batch of sunflowers.  And it was so sunny!  Here's the photo that I took.
This painting, Oh Sunny Day is dry, has been varnished and framed up.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Sunflowers, Up North

Sunflowers, Up North
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Landscape
Photo Reference Credit:  Susan Warner

The reference photo that I used for this small painting was one that Susan Warner took on a walk in the country, close to Charlevoix, Michigan.  Here is her fabulous photograph:

Of course it struck a cord with me since we were unable to make our annual trip Up North.  Susan graciously let me paint from her photograph.  It was fun, and my intent was to capture the beautiful warm indian yellows and ochres in the sunflowers.  I think I am going to let the painting sit on my easel for a few days, and maybe make a couple of small adjustments, but I can't do that now since it is very wet.  Thanks for looking at my blog, Kay

Flower Power

Flower Power
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral
As I continue to stay at home and studio during this pandemic, I continue to paint on a daily basis.  It's a happy habit I have.  Yesterday I was in the studio by myself with these sunflowers.  I was using thick piles of oil, layers and layers of transparent, and found myself lost in the heavy golden petals flopping all over the canvas.  These bold sunflowers are drying in the studio.  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at my art.  Kay

Turning Heads

Turning Heads
20" x 16" Oil on RayMar Panel
Contemporary Floral
I was in the studio looking for something to paint, as I didn't have any fresh flowers.  I came across a photo that studio mate Selena had passed along to me.  It was a great photo of a sunflower garden.  So that's how this one started, and ended up with this title when studio mate Sharon told me it the blooms in the foreground look like they are turning their heads.  I agreed, and then named this one "Turning Heads".  Sunflowers are so interesting, irregular and exciting to paint.  This painting is available for purchase, and it is drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Contact Kay with any comments or questions.  KMW

Peek A Boo

Peek A Boo
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral
What do you do when you get a new toy?  You play with it!!!  I got some new printer's rollers this week...in three different sizes.  I started spreading thin layers of paint with the rollers, and ended up with a globby mess.  Or so I thought.  I let the paint sit for a couple of days, and then looked for shapes, and I found sunflowers growing in tall grass.  Here's my finished painting, "Peek A Boo"!!!! This painting is available for purchase.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  Kay
