Finished!  This painting is drying in the studio...once I started this painting, I could not stop.  After visiting the Dallas Arboretum this week, I was so impressed and inspired with the vibrant colors of the tulips, that I could not resist painting them.  I decided that I needed to tone my canvas with a diluted Permanent Rose, then I was ready to start drawing on the canvas.  I used raw umber, olive green and violet to place the flowers and lay-out my road map.

I started with my transparent oils and put a couple of layers on, getting my dioxazine violet,  magenta, olive green, and permanent rose.  The background fades and is somewhat out of focus to create some distance on the canvas.  I mixed up about six different piles of greens, starting with sap, olive, and adding cad yellow and ice blue to get a good range of shades.  I put in the jonquils last because they were opaque, and I did not want to mix my transparent and opaques.  I hope that the viewer has a sense of the beauty and powerful color that I witnessed at the Arboretum.

I was back in the studio yesterday, and got my palette knife out and created this painting.  The paint is layered on the panel, giving it texture and depth.  I moved the paint around quite a bit once it was on the panel.  The horizon line was changed numerous times...I wanted it to fade into the background, and needed to mix my oils over and over to get a hazy far-away look. I know we are all longing for warm, blue skies with the weather we have been having in Texas.  So today's post is a contemporary landscape painting.  It is very painterly.  I was generous with the paint, and used a wide brush to lay in the colors.  I was at the studio painting for ten hours straight yesterday, and completed two paintings, worked on a large painting, and forgot to take pics.  I am really excited about the two paintings that are signed and drying.  I have a 4 woman show coming up and need to have a dozen new pieces.  More on that later.  Comments or questions....email ME.  Thanks, Kay

This painting has a new home!  This is one of my Wildflower Landscapes that I painted in 2014.  I worked on a series of them, and have explored many possibilities with this subject matter.  I am starting next year out with a paint challenge, and hoping to have a creative and productive 2015.  I think I will paint whatever I feel like painting...with Roosters and Cows at the top of my list.  I hope you all have a safe and fun New Years Eve!  Kay
