I was painting from memory, and going abstract on this panel. I wanted to get the colors right, and big blocks of shapes. This is a floral, but in a very abstract way. You might see something else. Layers and layers of color, lines and shapes make this canvas interesting and full of random ideas. I haven't decided which way I prefer to view the painting, so I deliberately put off signing the canvas. Turning it on it's side and mixing it up works for me. Here it is turned, and when it is viewed like the image below, I see a vase and flowers.
I used oil bars, oil paints, charcoal, wide brushes, small brushes, palette knives and rubber clay wedges to create "Random Ideas". "Crowd Pleaser" is signed, and drying at the studio...Starting this painting with transparent washes, I had a couple of ideas in mind for this rather large canvas. I have been wanting to paint a large floral landscape, then I thought it was about time to paint some roosters. In the end, a very abstract floral landscape appears...but one very different from what I was working on in the beginning.
My husband, John said that it looks like a crowd of people, and along with the pleasant colors I used, he suggested the title. I am alway open to suggestions when it comes to naming my canvases...and I thought he nailed it. "Crowd Pleaser" works for me! Layers of mixed colors applied with brushes, allow the canvas to have paint built up in some areas. This painting is available for purchase...contact Kay for more info. Thanks for looking at my blog! This painting is sold, but I was looking through my files of paintings and stopped at this one. It is very abstract with shapes blocked in and no detail. No fussiness at all, giving it a clean contemporary look. When I finish my commission that is on the easel, I think I will dive into a still life painting. We have plenty of fresh flowers in the studio, as several of my studio mates are painting florals. It's spring, and we all love flowers. This painting has plenty of color and movement on the canvas...lots of energy. I started with a wide brush, but switched to a palette knife to get layers and texture with the paint. I have finished Double Trouble! This contemporary abstract was created to hang as one large piece, measuring 40" x 60", plus any wall space that might be in-between the two canvases. With this commission, I concentrated on the color palette, and once I established my colors, put some shapes and movement on the canvas. I used a large palette knife to apply the layers of oil colors. The soft colors over-lap and blend into each other. There is some texture on the surface, and you can see some choppy knife marks in the paint. I did use impasto to get some body into the oil paints. This painting is drying...and ready to hang! Using a brush and palette knife to move the paint around, this small abstract is painted on a gallery wrap canvas. I started with greys, blues, soft greens and a fleshy-orange color. The palette knife helped me scrape the canvas several times. The caribbean blue and rose pinks were added to give it some pop and interest. The sides of the canvas are painted in the grey-blue background color, and signed on the side. This painting is drying in the studio, and is for purchase.
