Contemporary Landscape/Palette Knife Painting

Finished!  Using a palette knife and thick layers of oils, I painted this cotton panel in the studio.  I was able to go back into my memory and a few photos to capture the beauty of nature and the great outdoors.  When looking closely, you can see the texture created with the knife.  This one is currently getting a custom frame.  Thanks for looking at my art.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting.  KMW

This panel was painted recently during the Covid-19 pandemic.  It has wonderful colors in the landscape, and the sky is very moody.  The paint was applied thickly with a palette knife, giving the painting lots of texture.  It's tempting --- when you are looking at it up close, it's something that you want to touch!  I plan on putting a frame on this panel...it is at the studio just waiting to go live in a new home.  Thanks for looking at my blog...contact Kay for more info.  KMW

This painting went through some difficult stages before I decided it was complete.  Actually, the canvas was larger, and I cut the canvas down after I had finished painting.  I normally don't do that, but I felt that the composition worked better without so much canvas.  I believe it was originally an 18" x 18".  I used a palette knife all the way on this one...there is texture and depth in the landscape.  The skies are soft and whispy.

This painting is back from the framers and is ready to hang...

Contemporary Wildflower Landscape

This painting is completed, signed and drying on my easel.  Broad brush strokes, palette knife work, and vivid colors are characteristics found in the contemporary landscape.  Blue Skies Ahead was a challenge for me, and it went through several phases before I was able to call it completed.  

I started this painting with a base coat of turquoise---and in some places that paint peeks through.  The colorful sky and fast moving clouds were easy to put in, and I was careful to keep my darks dark; lights light; and mid-tones mid-tones.  I used a large filbert and huge amounts of paint for that.  

I was able to put in the background with some muted greys, lavenders, and greens.  The foreground colors were not easy to mix.  I wanted golden ochres, earthy greens and violet blues.  The blue bonnets have four and five different colors of blues, mostly applied with the palette knife.  I put a road in, with it fading off into the background.  More landscapes to come.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for viewing....Kay
