Prickly Pear Blooms by Kay Wyne

Prickly Pear Blooms
30" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Cacti Series
This painting is sitting on my easel, drying.  It has some details that you may not be able to see---lots of spiney needles.  This was a fun painting...the prickly pear cactus has many interesting shapes and characteristics.  I used a brush and palette knife to apply the layers of color.  This painting is available for purchase.  Contact Kay Wyne for more info.  Thanks, Kay

Windy December by Kay Wyne

Windy December
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Plein Air Landscape Painting in a handsome dark frame
$290
A windy day at White Rock Lake in Dallas proved to be challenging.  One of the most important things to do when painting in plein air is to be organized so that you can set up quickly, focus on painting, and come away with a completed study.  I usually don't have enough time to finish a painting, but once I pulled out my palette knife it all came together.  I captured the colors of the day...actually, I might use this painting to work on a larger canvas.  This painting is for sale.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay

Peaceful

Peaceful
12" x 16 Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
I enjoyed pushing the paint around on this canvas.  I used a palette knife all the way.  I wanted color and texture changes in the foreground, and movement in the sky.  This painting is framed in a dark plein air frame with gold lip.  Thanks for looking at this painting...Kay

Blue Skies Above

Blue Skies Above
24" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
Day #10 in the 30/30 Paint Challenge
This is a re-do from a painting that I was not happy with, and although I normally don't go back into a re-do, re-work, re-paint, re-finished painting, but I did this twice.  I am happier with this impressionistic landscape, and I am not going to change it....again.!!!!  I like the hint of the lavender in the foreground, and the swirling, moving clouds.  I used a wide brush and a medium sized palette knife to apply the paint.  Thanks for looking at this blog, and this painting...Kay

Reflections of Turtle Creek

Reflections
12" x 16" Plein Air Landscape
Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Day 4 of the 30/30 Challenge
I started to post another painting, but decided that I needed to make some changes on it in the studio today.  So I am posting a plein air painting that I painted at Turtle Creek in Dallas.  The sky was changing quickly and the light and shadows were moving.  I used my trusty palette knife on this panel. My goal was to nail the colors of the day and get the lily pads in the painting.  At first I was concerned that there was too much green in the landscape, and also so many variations of green.  I finished this painting in about an hour and half.

This painting is ready to be framed, and ready for a new home.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting or any others posted here.  Be sure to check out the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge with Leslie Saeta.  Lots of art posted on one blog from 1,000 artists!  Thanks, Kay

Sundown

Sundown
24" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Wildflower Landscape Painting

Still sitting on my easel, this one needs time to dry.  I loved the size of the canvas...and I am glad that I painted it vertically.  The sides of the canvas are painted, so framing is optional.  If you like a clean, contemporary look I think it looks great without a frame.

I pulled out some new colors for the sky....mixing, mixing, and more mixing so that I had plenty of piles of turqoise, transparent orange, purpley/blues, greys and greens.  My under painting was a transparent red and orange, and then I layered mixtures of unltramarine blue, diox purple, cobalt, white and grey for the wildflowers.  This painting took all week to paint because I did not want to create mud with the paint, so layers needed to set-up so I could go back into the colors without creating a big mess.

Inspiration for this painting were photos of the hill country taken on a trip last spring...fields of color went on and on....and I wanted these flowers to fade into the horizon, and the sky to have a red hot flaming feel to it.  Thanks for looking at this blog....contact Kay with any questions or comments.  Have an artful day!  Kay

Untitled Floral Landscape

Untitled - needs a name!
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Wildflower Painting
This painting is one of the wildflower landscape series that I am working on.  I think I am finished...I will let it sit in the studio for the next couple of days and over time decide if I need to put some more paint on it.  I mixed my colors on my palette before I started painting...I knew I needed five or six mixtures of purpley-blues.  If you have a good suggestion for a name for this painting, please let me know.  Let Kay know your suggestion.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay

Over The Hill in Cransfill Gap

Over The Hill In Cransfill Gap
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
This painting might not be completed....it is drying
at the studio right now.  I may put a fence in,
but I need to think about it for a few days.
Mike and Missy Rogers took a fabulous photo
last year of this Lutheran church, and there was
an old country fence....so that might go in
after it dries.  This is day 16 of the

LJB Ranch

LBJ Ranch
8" x 16" Oil on Panel
This small painting was inspired by a Hill Country trip
last spring.  On a driving tour of the LBJ Ranch I
took some great pictures of the cattle.
I wanted to get the colors right on this painting,
and not get fussy on the details.
The Texas landscape is beautiful on the ranch
and the cattle are amazing.
This is painting #2 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge!
Thanks for looking at this blog....
Have a good and safe holiday.

White Rock Lake Boats

White Rock Lake Boats
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
This painting is the first in a series of landscapes.  I am starting the Leslie Saeta 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge and it begins on September 1st!  I decided to paint landscapes so that I would have a theme and I have some wonderful places to go and paint in Dallas.  I used lots of juicy oils in this painting, and wanted it to be loose and colorful.  More tomorrow....join me and about 300 other artists painting for Leslie's challenge...it is fun and helps you paint everyday.  Thanks for viewing....KMW

Wide Open Sky

Wide Open Sky
Contemporary Landscape Painting
36"x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
I was back in the studio yesterday, with 6 paintings on the easels.  I was bouncing around from painting to painting, needing to focus on getting at least one of them completed.  All are at different stages and all need some serious attention.  We had a critique session at the studio, which helped get me on track and now I have a game plan for today.  It is always good to take pics and talk about a painting when you are stuck or having a problem with a painting.  This painting, Wide Open Sky is available for purchase.  Contact Kay for more information.  Thanks, KMW at kay@kwyne.com
