Beach Time

Beach Time
9" x 12" Oil on Canvas
NSF - A Christmas gift for my in-laws.
I sent this painting to Ruth and Louie for a Christmas gift. It was a fun painting because of the shadows and the subject matter. My inspiration was a 1990's photograph and alot of memories from our summers in Charlevoix, Michigan. The beach at Sequanota Club was our afternoon hang-out. As my daugher pointed out, it was good that I put a few details in this painting...like the tennis shoes and laces, the bouys in the water, and Ruth's visor. I can feel the sun and sand when I look at this painting. I hope to go to the studio today and ring out the year painting. Happy New Year to all, and have a safe holiday!!!

On my easel......

Red Rooster after two days of painting...This canvas is extremely wet. After thick application of paint with a wide brush, I started layering the paint with a knife. The paint needs to set up before I finish the eyes and hit him with some hi-lites. I don't know if I am going to the studio today or not. If I do go, I need to let this one rest and work on something else. Have a warm and artful day.

Pastoral Scene

This painting has a new home in Illinois....this image is a little different from many of my paintings....I toned the color down. It is peaceful. Not alot of movement. I wanted the viewer to imagine that he or she is out on the Texas landscape...far from the city or the hussle and bussle of anyone. The grazing sheep are images that don't have alot of detail because they are small compared to the vast landscape. The canvas has big, open sky on the painting, so I am sure that some people could imagine this being in Montana or somewhere out west. (At least west of Dallas.) My inspiration for this painting was an old photograph out of an album....I really don't know where the pic was taken, and I added the sheep for interest. I have painted three paintings with sheep, and hope to do more. Thanks for viewing this blog, and I will be painting at the studio today and hope to post the rooster that I started yesterday. Dallas is in for more snow and bad weather, so I hope that I can get downtown. Have an artful day!!!

The Bridge

The Bridge
Oil on 18" x 18" Gallery Wrap Canvas
This painting was inspired by a photograph my husband took as we were sitting in traffic ready to cross the the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It was a clear, windy day and we had a great time traveling around the California coast! I had researched the color of the bridge...according to my findings, the bridge is painted with a Sherwin Williams color #6328, Fireweed. I went to a local Sherwin Williams to check out this Fireweed color....and I really don't think the bridge is actually Fireweed. According to the paint swatches, Fireweed is a deep, rusty brick red....almost brown. So I mixed my own colors to what I remember and according to our photographs. This painting has a new home in Plano, Texas...it was a Christmas gift to a friend who traveled with us to California. Fun trip, good memories.....so I hope that this painting will be a reminder of our trip when it is viewed.

Jackson Hole Chapel #2

Jackson Hole Chapel
Oil on Linen
9" x 12"
This is the last painting I will post of the chapel...I like the front door open, so the eye looks thru the building, all the way back to the landscape. At one time I had a path painted to the front door, but decided that it detracted from the chapel. This painting is very handsome in a dark wood frame with a gold liner. Thanks for visiting my blog!

Jackson Hole Chapel #3

Jackson Hole Chapel
Painting #3
Oil on 8" x 36" Gallery Wrap Canvas
I can post this painting now that it has been given to Raymond and Marydel as a Christmas gift from daughter Carrie. After painting two versions of this chapel, I was not satisfied. So I started slapping the paint on the mountains with a palette knife and got loose on this canvas. At one point the grass in the foreground was green.....and it blended in too much with the aspen trees. So I did scrape the paint off the fence and ground. I have been known to have "issues" with green before....everyone at the studio knows that I can get into trouble with green paint. So I used Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre and some Raw Umber on the ground. Tomorrow I will post the second painting....Have a great day, and thanks for viewing my blog!

Jackson Hole Chapel

Jackson Hole Chapel
Oil on Linen
9" x 12"
This is one of three paintings that I have completed of a chapel in Jackson Hole. Carrie Harris asked me to paint the chapel so that she could give to her parents for a Christmas gift. The mountains and aspens were so much fun to paint. Since I have not seen this chapel, I had to rely on Carrie's photographs for reference. This is painted on linen...which gives the painting a very smooth texture compared to the canvas that I normally paint on. Tomorrow I will post painting number two. This is painting is very handsome in a dark plein air frame. This painting will be for sale once it is framed....Carrie decided that she liked painting number three and that is what is under her Christmas tree....so I will post that one in a couple of days. Three different paintings, three different interpretations....all the same subject matter. It was a good painting challenge for me. I just hope that Carrie's gift is a hit with her parents!

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays from me to you!!!
It is hard getting the family together...here we are in June at a wedding. Lindsay had just moved back to Dallas, and Blake was in College Station, but has since moved to Houston. It was 112 degrees when we came out of the church from Stacey's wedding in Ft. Worth. A typical Texas afternoon!!! This is one of the rare photos I have of us together....need to work on that! I have been mailing out Christmas cards...the final rush is on. Merry Christmas, and have a safe and joyful holiday with your family and friends. I will be heading to Studio Art and Soul today, so will post some paintings tomorrow. Thanks for visiting my blog!

On my easel...

Here are two 9" x 12" paintings that might be finished....they are sitting on my easel, and I am thinking about it. I have two other versions of this painting going also. The sky and mountians were painted first. I loved doing the mountains with the palette knife. Two things have given me problems in this painting: The color of the field and the chapel. I have changed the grass to yellow ochre, to sap green, and everything in between. The photograph I have been working from doesn't have much detail in it, and it is very hard for me to see the chapel. I may need to take a break from these paintings, as I have worked on them for two weeks. More to follow on these....I will be doing some Christmas shopping and working on our family Christmas card today. Have a good day, and thanks for viewing my blog!

Horizon Series: Abstract 20 - SOLD

Horizon Series: Abstract 20
This painting sold last night at the Andelon Art Gallery for $400. I donated this painting to Smart-Art, Artists for Education. The money raised benefits the scholarship fund of St. Mary of Carmel School. Liz Schneider and her friends put on a wonderful event. It was an evening of art, artists and wine. Liz and her friends should be proud of the turn-out on a rather cold evening. I met Colleen, the lady who purchased this painting...I know it will be hanging in a good home. Thanks for viewing my blog!

Painted Face

Painted Face
Oil on 24" x 24" Gallery Wrap Canvas
$500
This painting was inspired from a photograph that I took in 1977 on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Busby, Montana. I had taken this photo at a Pow Wow and have always liked the clothing this child had on...all of the beads, leather, feathers....and I aged the child...he turned into a man on the canvas. Of course I added my own color and shapes. Lots of wide brush strokes and geometric shapes. I finished this yesterday in the studio. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing.
