Vying For Position

Vying For Position
11" x 14" Oil on Linen - Framed
Contemporary Equine Painting
This painting is completed after starting it, taking a break from it, and revisiting the canvas.  The smooth linen surface didn't have very much texture or tooth, months ago, and putting it aside when I got frustrated with the painting surface.  Even though this is on a small canvas, I wanted to keep the brush strokes loose, colorful and energetic.  "Vying For Position" is framed and ready to hang!  Contact ME for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking at this blog...KMW

The Race Is On

The Race Is On
24" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting
Since today is the running of the Kentucky Derby, I am posting one of my paintings from my equine series.  This colorful painting has a very geometrical and simple background, so that the eye goes straight to the jockey sitting on the race horse.  The brushstrokes are bold and loose.  I wanted to capture the strength and speed of the horse on canvas.  This painting is ready to hang, no frame needed.  Contact ME for purchasing information.  Thanks for looking at this blog......Kay

Spirit of the Race

Spirit of the Race
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Spirited Horse Painting
This painting was inspired by a photograph that I took at the Lone Star Race Track in Grand Prairie, Texas. It was a very warm and sunny day, and all of the jockeys in colorful jerseys really caught my eye. There were seven horses out of the gate on this race, but I decided to focus on two horses for this painting. I had the starting gates painted in, but decided that the background needed to leave more to the imagination of the viewer's eye. I did not want to give away too much information. So, I focused on the horses and the energy on the track. I used wide brushes, oil pastels sticks and the palette knife.
Close-up. This painting is too wet to move off the easel. I will take a better photograph of it in natural light once it dries. Thanks for looking at my art.....Kay at 214-532-0325

The Race Is On!

The Race Is On!
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
24" x 36"
I just completed this painting...and had to dash home from the studio to watch The Preakness Stakes. I usually don't paint race horses from this perspective. But as always, I am putting the paint on the canvas to express the movement, excitement and colorful feel of the race.

I was able to get a good start on a palette knife painting today...windows, window boxes, and flower pots. I was covered in paint...that painting needs to set-up before I start putting shadows and details in. Thanks so much for viewing my blog. Have a great weekend, and feel free to contact me if you are interested in any of my paintings.

The Inside Track

The Inside Track
Oil on Canvas
24" x 30"
I finished this painting. Normally I paint odd numbers of objects or subject matter in my paintings, but four horses seemed to work for me on this canvas. I did have some horses in the background at one time, but decided to blurr the background completely. Initially I had the starting stalls in the background with roof and sky painted in, but I changed my plans. The horse with the green blinker on the inside track is in the lead. This painting conveys the energy, excitement, and competitiveness of the horse race. This painting will be for sale once it dries and placed up at The Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Thanks for viewing this blog. Please contact me if you are interested in this painting that is fresh off the easel!

On the easel.....almost finished!

This painting is on the easel...needs some touches of detail and it will be finished. This painting is going to need a frame...it is on a 24" x 30" canvas. These race horses are in the middle of a tight race. Lots of action, movement and color. After taking a pic of this painting, and posting on the computer I am able to see some "mistakes" or small things that need changing. The background has a problem --- I spent quite a bit of time on it, wanting to making it recede and fuzzy. The jockey's jerseys need some touches of detail, and the horses need some definition on the head. I hope to put this in the upcoming show at Dutch Art Gallery....Who Does She Think She Is?
