Lace Curtains

"Lace Curtains" was painted when I was going through a window and shutter phase. I think I had started with three flower pots and gradually added more and more...until I got thirteen flower pots sitting on t he ledge. My favorite part about this painting is the bricks and stucco on the outside of this building...used a knife, so the paint is thick a textured. I am getting ready to look at my pictures from our painting weekend in the hill country. Lots of cows, horses, dogs and beautiful landscapes to paint...

Painting in progress

The first picture was taken in the studio of Laurie Justus Pace in Dallas about a year ago. I was just starting this painting. Visit Laurie's blog at: http://www.lauriepace.blogspot.com/ It was a good experience painting with Laurie---and of course it is always so much fun and interesting to paint and create with other artists. Today I am leaving for the hill country to paint with my studio partners and some other artists. We are traveling to Mark and John's farm about 6 hours south of Dallas. It will be a new experience painting plein air with this group. I am packed, ready to role. I hope that we have great weather and great colors for the painting. The second picture was taken this past weekend near College Station...Blake Wyne with cute dog Penny Lane in the blue bonnets. I am hoping to see lots of these blue bonnets on this trip. I will be away from the computer for five days...will post a new painting next week!

Fish Fry

Here is the larger fish in skillet painting...It has broad brush strokes and more detail than yesterday's posting. It is on a gallery wrap canvas, 18" x 18". It is larger and looser. I have been corrected by the person who caught these fish. They are probably brook or brown trout. But not rainbow. I think I wanted them to be rainbow because in my mind, they would be colorful. But I stand corrected.

Fish Fry

This small 6" x 8" painting is the second fish painting. I got my inspiration from a photo taken years ago in Michigan when my mother in-law was frying up some trout that my husband caught. The big black cast iron skillet held four or five fish. The first painting of the skillet will be posted later (when I can find it!) The trout were always so beautiful...rainbow trout if I remeber correctly.

I was browsing through some pics trying to find something to work on a self-portrait. Did not find anything that I would consider worthy of painting. Maybe I will have my husband take some pics today. The artists at the studio are all going to do a self-portait at the studio for a show...I can't remember which show, or when it is, but it is on my painting-to-do-list. I did find this pic from the studio open tour in November. I hope to paint today!

All Stacked Up

I grabbed three teacups that were hanging in my kitchen, stacked them up and painted them. This oil painting is on a 6" x 8" panel. Now that I look at it, I am not sure that it is finished....I might need to take it back to the studio and add some highlights. I would like to do a large still life with these teacups in it...along with some flowers, books, everyday objects...also, I have been rummaging through old photographs getting some inspiration for some new paintings. And along with finding old photographs, I would say that I am spring cleaning. The weather in Dallas is perfect....82 degrees, sunny, no wind...just perfect! Which reminds me, today is the first day of spring. Happy Spring!

Violett

This painting is still very wet. I have just titled it Violett, and might enter it in the Texas Visual Arts Association Landscape Exhibition and Juried Show. Not sure. It is on a 6" x 8" panel, and I think I would like to paint this one on a large canvas...I think I could go wild with this one. Anyway, I have not decided what to do as far as a title. Need to think on it. I did layer the paint on pretty thick. I guess I am gearing up for the hill country painting trip next week! Off to the studio, hopefully for a productive day in front of the easel.

Sushi Anyone?

This is the second Different Stroke From Different Folks Challenge that I have painted. The photograph of sushi was posted two weeks ago. If you go to http://differentstrokesfromdifferentfolks.blogspot.com/ you can see all the entries from artists who participated. I like looking at the different approaches taken on this challenge. I wanted to go with very colorful palette. This painting is on a 6" x 8" panel.

Tuscany Shadows

This is a painting is hanging in a home in Dallas. Bob and Fran have it placed at the end of a long hallway, and it looks great in their home. When painting this piece, I was going through a mellow yellow phase, and I was in love with the color yellow...and I still like it, but not as much. (That was when I had our living room and dining room painted yellow, and I purchased yellow chintz china.) The building in the background has many layers of creamy yellow paint on it...and the shadows on the street are very cool. I hope that the viewer enjoys this painting....I think looking at it makes you want to get on a plane and get out of Dallas!

Wigs

SOLD
Karin Jurick has a blog, Different Strokes From Different Folks. Every two weeks she posts a photograph, and artists are invited to paint or draw interpretations of that photograph. I think that there were about 75 artists who participated in this challenge. This past week it was a photograph of sushi...I loved painting that one. (not the case with this challenge!!!) A couple of fellow studio partners painted this also, and we agreed that it was a challenge as we grumbled and painted. My painting ended up with some angles, and abstract. Please go to Karin's blog: http://differentstrokesfromdifferentfolks.blogspot.com/ to view all the paintings submitted.

Croquet Balls

I pulled out three colorful croquet balls from the arrangement on my coffee table. This 6" x 8" oil painting was fun to do...it is colorful, simple and fun. I hope to get to the studio this afternoon and paint something different. I have been going thru my kitchen cabinets, looking for some interesting dishes...I am not sure what will inspire me when I look at the blank canvas today.

Croquet

This is a 6" x 8" panel I painted soon after the Carol Marine Workshop. I liked the placement of the objects; a mallet, a post and a ball...all out of an old and worn croquet set that we have in the garage. We have some interesting and rather old croquet balls...most of them do no belong in a set, but ones that have been collected over the years. I have more croquet balls than mallets, so I display all the balls in a big bowl on a coffee table in the den. More croquet balls to come tomorrow....

Antique Floral

This 11" x 14" is on a canvas in oils. The paint is pretty thick on the flowers, and very painterly. I need to go buy some fresh flowers --- it has been a while since I have painted any florals. I painted this with Mary Dolph Wood, a Taos, New Mexico artist. I fell in love with her work when John and I were in Santa Fe and Taos a couple of years ago. I contacted her, and she came to my house for a painting lesson. She was visiting her daughter in Plano, and carved out a day to talk to me and work with me on my art. It was a wonderful experience. Mary spent alot of time with me, showing me how she sets up her still lifes, and then we did a paint-a-long. Of course I liked her painting better than mine!

Watering Can

You can see the watering can thru the window. This painting allows the viewer to only imagine what is sitting on the counter with the watering can...there are some hints of objects and light coming thru the window. I hope you enjoy viewing my paintings....

Lake View

Here is a landscape painting from a year ago...painted from a photograph taken in Ironton, Michigan. I started a landscape at the studio on Sunday, and finished it up yesterday. We are getting ready to go to the hill country in a couple of weeks ---- and paint Plein Air. Can't wait!

Fishing Tackle

I painted this 6" x 8" immediately after coming back from the Carol Marine workshop. The day I was painting this panel in the studio, I got a big hook in my finger. I screamed because it surprised me, and Suzy came to the rescue and yanked it out of my finger. It was a hook hanging out of an old lure. Needless to say, I try to be careful when rambling through the old tackle box. I liked the movement in this painting...the eye keeps moving around, from the fishing line, to bobber, to the lure.

Paint

Another quick study from the studio...I was looking for something to paint and pulled a couple of tubes of paint. I got alot of white in this painting, and that makes my colors dull. All of my tubes are distorted and basically a mess. Smudges of paint are everywhere. This is a 6" x 6" panel.

Teacup

I love china. Here is a teacup painted on a 6" x 6" panel. I did not go into detail with the pattern on the chinz...I just wanted to give a hint of the pattern and the light, delicate pattern on the cup and saucer. I painted some other teacups yesterday at the studio. Hope to post more in the future.

Play Ball

It feels like baseball weather in Texas! (80 degrees and sunny!!!) I found this rather old YMCA baseball cap in a closet...it was my husband's YMCA cap, along with an old baseball....it is on a 6" X 8" panel. It was a quick painting, and to my surprise, the old dingy baseball was not easy to paint. Dirty white, scuffed up ivory, grass-stained cream, a tinge of aged yellow ochre and brownish-green are the colors I mixed up so that I could show the viewer what character the baseball had. Not just titanium white out of the tube...no, that would be too easy. I hope you enjoy my oil painting, and if you are interested in purchasing it, please contact me: kay@kwyne.com.

Brown Eggs

"Brown Eggs" is painted on a 6" by 6" panel. I was scrounging around at the studio looking for something to paint, and I found some nice brown eggs that Karen had. She had taken the time to blow them out. So I did not have to worry about breaking an egg! This was a quick one. I like the shadows on this oil painting, and the subject matter. I need to find some real pretty eggs...maybe I will go to Central Market or Whole Foods today. If anyone has a good source for pretty eggs...in differnt colors. spotted, flecked, different sizes, please let me know. Thanks!

Tow Truck

This is a 9" x 12" oil painting, painted from a photo I took in Salado, Texas. We were eating lunch at the local BBQ joint, and this truck was parked in a front yard across the street. We all thought it had alot of character. Actually, the whole town has alot of character. This is my second painting of an old truck, and I must say it is not getting easier. The next truck I paint is going to be on a larger canvas. The smaller canvas forces me to paint in details and use smaller brushes, pushing me out of my comfort zone. But, that is o.k. Small, medium or large....doesn't matter what size the canvas is, it is how the paint is applied, the whole process I go through, and the end results that counts.

Jar of Flowers

I like painting on this size canvas...18" x 18". For some reason it is more appealing to paint on this size than a 16" x 16" or a 20" x 20" canvas...and, of course 18" x 18" is harder to find in the art supply stores. This painting is down at Studio Art and Soul, hanging on the wall in the eating area with some other paintings by fellow partners at the studio. Strong colors, thick application of paint and shadows are characteristics in this piece. I hope you enjoy it.

Pastel Floral

Today's painting is a floral....one that was painted about a year ago. I have not painted flowers since last summer, and maybe I need to tackle one. I need to paint something fun today after struggling with my painting yesterday. The challenge yesterday was a painting challenge posted at Different Strokes From Different Folks. Several fellow artists at the studio are doing a painting challenge with Karin Jurick. For more information, her blog is: http://differentstrokesfromdifferentfolks.blogspot.com/ and results are being posted. I know Grant finished his painting yesterday, and I think I am finished with it. We will be posting our paintings by Wednesday of this week.

Shea Baby

This painting just came down from the TVAA show at Plaza of the Americas in downtown Dallas. Shea is our thirteen year old yellow Lab. Lately she has gotten very sassy and rules at our house. She has always had alot of life, and I wanted to convey that "spark" that she has on the canvas. This canvas has wide brushstrokes, and is a very bold painting. Shea has also had her portrait painted by Suzy Moritz. I would say that Shea is very special...not very many dogs can say that they have had their portraits painted by two artists! Suzy paints alot of dogs, and does commissions. You might check her website out...she also paints at Studio Art and Soul in The Cedars, located south of downtown Dallas. Actually, once you are on the Studio Art and Soul website, check out all of the Dallas artists there...it is a great group---eleven creative artists who love to paint!
