Once In A Blue Moon

Once In A Blue Moon
16" x 20" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting
Once in a Blue Moon ... a phrase that we have all heard. This was a topic of conversation in the Wyne house lately....it is a common way of saying not very often, but what exactly is a Blue Moon? It is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. That occured last December, when we had a Full Moon on the 2nd and the 31st. According to the experts, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.
Once in a Blue Moon is also a title for lyrics to songs....like the Van Morrison song....
Once in a blue moon
Something good comes along
Once in a blue moon
Everything's not going wrong
When you get weary
Beating on the same old gong
Once in a blue moon
Someone like you comes along
When I started the above painting, I had a collage look going, starting with the words, Once in a Blue Moon painted on the canvas several times. If you look closely you can see them under the layers of paint. You can also see two images of horses, geometric figures and layers of paint along with oil crayons. There is alot of movement in the painting and the eye jumps from one shape to the next shape. This contemporary abstrct oil painting is now signed and completed after weeks on the easel. It is on a gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is needed. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing. Thanks for viewing this blog!

Fenced In At Fuel City

Fenced In At Fuel City
Oil on Canvas
24" x 24" Gallery Wrap Canvas
This donkey lives in downtown Dallas...at Fuel City. He is always eager to come to the fence, possibly looking for food. He isn't as vibrant and colorful in real life, but he does have a colorful personality. This painting is the third in a series, Fenced In. In this series of paintings an animal is fenced in...usually behind a barbed wire fence. It is hard to believe that this fellow is living blocks away from downtown Dallas, off Industrial Blvd. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing this whimsical contemporary oil painting. This painting will be entered in the "Hecho in Dallas" Art Exhibit at the Latino Cultural Center of Dallas, along with two other oil paintings. Thanks for viewing this blog!

Sunny Day at the Arboretum

Great view at the Dallas Arboretum! It is hard to believe that it is January.
It was a wonderful day for plein air painting.
Cris Emrich, Marketing Director at the Arboretum visited us and gave us a personal tour. Thanks, Cris!!!

I started this painting looking out over White Rock Lake. This is will be entered in the Garden Gallery, a juried exhibition of art work from the gardens at the Dallas Arboretum. If we don't have a snow storm this week, I will be going back to the Arboretum.

On the Easel - Beach

Beach - On the Easel
This 8" x 10" beach scene is in a drying stage. I have so much paint on the canvas that it is hard to work on, and at one point the painting took a change. I had painted a person in, and the figure got smeared and it wasn't working for me. So instead of wiping the entire canvas and starting over, I wiped the person sitting on the beach out. Yesterday I went to the Arboretum for some plein air painting. The weather was gorgeous. Hope to post some of those photos tomorrow. Thanks for viewing this blog.

Aspen Landscape-SOLD

Aspens Landscape
SOLD!
8" x 8" Oil on Canvas
Palette Knife Painting
Aspen trees......we don't have them in Dallas. (And we don't have mountains either.) We didn't have in them in Illinois. They are beautiful, and on our last trip to Santa Fe I really started noticing them and wanting to paint them. As I was looking through some of my Santa Fe pics and some of daughter Lindsay's Jackson Hole pics I realized how neat they were. Here is my first attempt at painting aspens. I need to study them and really figure out what is so different about these trees. Wes Henry told me he learned alot about them from Raymond Harris while visiting Jackson Hole last summer. They tend to grow in clumps, sharing the same roots. The aspen tree, also known as quaking aspen or Populus tremuloides, is from the willow family. It is a fast-growing but short-lived tree. I need to research this. Anyway, here is my painting.....

Fenced In

Fenced In
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I must admit that I don't see too many of buffalo in Dallas. My inspiration for this painting was a photograph taken by studio painting partner Mark Malone. Last summer Mark and John Martin were driving near Cimarron, north of Angel Fire, New Mexico. Mark said that there were three buffalo close to the fence----I liked this fellow who was standing behind the fence. Mark had painted this buffalo, grazing in the field, and graciously gave me the opportunity to paint this creature. My first day of painting was fun...I splashed on some color, positioned the head off-center on the canvas. Day two was even more fun because I really got the color going. But by day three and four, I was struggling with the snout on this guy. I guess I have painted too many cows, and he looked more like a cow than a buffalo. After a critique by Karen, Suzy and Carol at the studio, I believe that I have captured the features on his head. This contemporary painting is full of color, wide brush strokes. Fenced In is for sale. Please contact me if you are interested in this painting, and thanks for visiting this blog.

I was looking through my paintings, and this one is one of my favorites...it has alot of life and energy bouncing off the canvas. The colors are fun exciting. Potted Plants

Potted Plants
16" x 20" Oil on canvas
NFS
This painting was one that I worked on when I was in my "floral phase." I like the rich, deep colors in the plants and the texture in the tile. The sunlight hits the terra cotta pots, and you can see the cool shadows. Sunlight...we haven't seen much of that lately in Dallas. It is another cloudy and probably rainy day. Have an artful day...I hope to post my new buffalo painting this weekend. It is wet and needs a couple of brushstrokes, and it will be ready to sign!

Rooster

Rooster
Palette Knife Painting
Oil on 9" x 12" canvas

This was my first painting using my Guerilla Box. Saturday was very cold in Dallas, and I was not in the mood to drive downtown to the studio. I decided I would do a dry run on my plein-air painting experience in my kitchen. So, I unpacked my new box (which was a Christmas gift from my sweet husband who purchases more paint, easels, and painting supplies than he knows what to do with!) I set the Guerilla Box up at the kitchen counter, and proceeded to paint. It did not take me long to realize that I did not have the right brushes. Thank heavens I wasn’t out in the elements or far from home. So, I did a flamboyant rooster with my palette knife. The rooster is small…on a 9” x 12” canvas. I got my act together and now have everything ready to head outside and paint. I hope to go to White Rock Lake or on top of the roof at the studio when we have a warm sunny day to really use my new Guerilla Box. But, for today I will be going to the studio and working on some beach scenes that I started last week. Here are some photos my new Guerilla Box!!! Thanks for viewing this blog.

Yarn

This is a 18" x 18" oil painting on a gallery wrap canvas. Very colorful. Inspired by yarn. Lots of stacked up yarn in a bin. It is a kaleidoscope of variegated colors. I thought I would rename this painting, but Yarn it is. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing. No frame needed...it is ready to hang!

Elsie by Kay Wyne

Elsie
16" x 20" Oil on canvas
Framed, currently hanging at Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, Texas
I pulled this photo of a painting I did.... to look at Elsie's eyes. Wide brush strokes and splashes of color hit Elsie in this contemporary oil painting. My brushes were not kind to me today....I have three paintings on the easel, and at the end of the afternoon, picked up my palette knife and started spreading the paint. Hopefully tomorrow will be more successful in the studio. Please contact me if you interested in purchasing this painting.

On the High Road

On the High Road
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
On our last trip to Santa Fe, John and I took a day trip: The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway. It is a lovely, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Santa Fe and Taos. The landscape was fabulous.....magnificent vistas of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and charming traditional Spanish and Pueblo villages. This drive through the mountains has inspired many artists and artisans who live along the High Road. As we were driving through the village of Truchas, John pulled off the road and I photographed some horses fenced in a yard with the mountains in the background. There were three horses standing there, ready for a photo session. I put the finishing touches on this painting yesterday, and signed it.

Murphy, The Dachshund

Murphy
Very Wet!
Oil on 9" x 12" canvas
This dachshund belongs to Lindsey Pharr...Murphy lives in Houston, Texas. I might need to make a couple of adjustments on this painting, but it is extremely wet right now. I used Yellow Ochre, Cad Red, Burnt Umber and Violet to get his rusty burnt color on his hair. This impressionistic painting has broad brushstrokes loaded with paint. My reference photograph was not real good, and I could not tell what color his little eyes were, but they were pretty dark....dark umber or close to black. I need to study this little fellow some more before I sign it. And maybe a few strokes on the red collar. I could not see the doggie tag in the photo, but it could be a Texas A & M dog tag.

City Sheep

City Sheep
Oil on 18" x 18" Gallery Wrap Canvas
This painting is still now finished. I was driving to the studio a last spring, and in the middle of downtown Dallas is Old City Park...a little village of old buildings and some animals. I was driving, minding my own business and this one sheep was just standing there looking at me...staring at me. I pulled over and took some pics of him. (All of the other goats and sheep ignored me.) So the title of this is City Sheep. This is a fun, wacky animal that was so much fun to paint. I look for him every time I drive to the studio. If you are interested in purchasing this contemporary oil painting, please contact me. Thanks for viewing my blog.

Red Rooster

Red Rooster
Oil on 24" x 24" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Wide brushstrokes, splashes of color, and thick paint are characteristics of this painting. This red rooster might be giving you the evil eye, he might be very angry, or he could be your everyday run of the mill rooster. I haven't named him yet, so until I figure that out, the title of this piece is Red Rooster. I signed him and I think he is finished. There are layers and layers of color and texture on the canvas. It will take along time for him to dry.

I started a new series yesterday, and can't wait to get back into the studio to work on my first piece. I am photographing it as it goes through changes....from start to finish. More on that painting later....Have a great day!
