On My Easel....by Kay Wyne

Starting with a 48" x 60" canvas, I was needing to get rid of the white.
I started with a toned canvas, then started drawing with paint and a filbert.
I don't have a plan, I am just painting.
More on this canvas later in the week....Today is Thanksgiving, and I hope you are enjoying the holiday with friends and family.
Happy Thanksgiving!  Kay

On the easel...palette knife painting

This is what is sitting on my easel...I was applying the paint with the palette knife and really got carried away...it is very wet and looks like frosting on a cake. The oils need to set-up for a few days before I continue. This is on a 12" x 12" gessoed masonite. It is a good start on aspen trees...I won't be able to work on it for several days. Thanks for viewing this blog..have a great day and stay cool!

On the easel...Window Boxes

Window Boxes
This painting is still wet. I painted it on Saturday, and I thought it was finished. But after going to the studio today and looking at it, I need to hit it with some more paint. At 10:00 a.m. the temperature inside the studio was 80 degrees. Trying to paint when it is so hot and humid makes me cranky. So, I hung it up for the day. Hopefully the air conditioning will get fixed SOON. I hope that your day was cool and creative. Thanks for viewing my blog.

On my easel...

Cowboy Up is extremely wet. All I have to do is look at it and I get paint on myself. I had the knives and brushes working on this painting. Saturday I put the lettering on, worked on his hat and shirt. I thought the background was finished, but I need to put more light coming from behind his shoulder. The shirt, jeans, boots and chaps need some detail. Or at least a little implication of detail. I can't wait to put the fringe on the chaps...I just hope I don't get carried away with it and over paint. It is important to know when to stop painting. That is when it is good to step back from the painting and look at it. I can't wait to get into the studio today...Thank for viewing this blog. I hope to post more tommorrow....

On my easel...

Things were not working for me yesterday at the studio...I had been working on the above painting of the five race horses, and all of the sudden I decided it needed to go. Instead of trashing the canvas, I applied thick coats of naples yellow, warm grey and white with the palette knife. In a minute of frustration I painted it all out and went from a horizontal to a vertical canvas. Funny how things can change so quickly. I had originally purchased this large canvas to do a contemporary cowboy painting...and I think that was in the back of my mind as I was working on the horses. Whatever I was doing, I wasn't happy with it. I am taking a break today after yesterday's annoying experience and tackle a new painting tommorrow. Thanks for viewing this blog.

On the easel...

On the easel.....three paintings in progress.

I got to the studio yesterday afternoon, and worked until dark on these three paintings...got a good start on the rooster. It is on a 30" x 30" canvas...so it is going to be pretty large. I need to let the paint dry before I go in with the palette knife and really apply thick layers of paint. The saddle on the horse has bored me because it is standing still...no action. I was using a reference photograph from the horse show I went to last month. (Maybe I need to talk to the horseman, Casey Settles about this.....) I am not sure what I am going to do to jazz it up. The race horse painting did have five horses in it, and I painted three of them out. I am not sure if I like the two horses...I might change my mind and put another one back in. It is good for me to see these paintings on the computer....and look at what changes need to be made. I welcome any suggestions!!!!
I am taking today off from the studio....family day at the Wyne house. We will head out to church, and I have made my chicken sour cream enchiladas for lunch. We are missing Blake today because he is working. But we do have Wes and Lindsay here with us....and Penny Lane (Blake's dog). I hope that you have a joyful Easter with your family and friends. Thanks for viewing this blog!

On the Easel....

I started this painting today...it is a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas. I started out with a titan buff background, then loose oil sticks for the image, and gradually painted in with oil paint using a wide brush. I plan on working on the background before I do any more work on the cowboy. I had alot of fun in front of the easel today...I can't wait to go back to the studio tommorrow.

On the easel...Jackson Huette

Jackson is on a 10" x 10" canvas. I wish I had put him on a larger canvas. This painting has a good start. But it isn't close to being finished. I got alot of paint on him after two days, and then had to let it sit. The nose and eyes need work, and I am not happy with the background. This chocolate lab is still a pup and lives in Ridgefield, CT. The tiny photograph that I am working from doesn't show alot of detail. I hope to get to the studio today and work on him.

On the Easel - Beach

Beach - On the Easel
This 8" x 10" beach scene is in a drying stage. I have so much paint on the canvas that it is hard to work on, and at one point the painting took a change. I had painted a person in, and the figure got smeared and it wasn't working for me. So instead of wiping the entire canvas and starting over, I wiped the person sitting on the beach out. Yesterday I went to the Arboretum for some plein air painting. The weather was gorgeous. Hope to post some of those photos tomorrow. Thanks for viewing this blog.

Studio Time...What's on the easel....

Studio Art & Soul
Kay's new easel
I have been spending alot of time down at the studio...getting ready for some upcoming shows. I had a great week...I got a new easel!!! I had been borrowing one of Suzy's easels, and really needed to get my own. I have several portable easels, but they are not very sturdy, and aren't made for large pieces. I doubt that the easel will make me paint differently, but it sure is nice! I wonder how long it will take for my easel to look like Sharon's easel.....plastered in strokes, dabs and globs of oil paint. That would give the easel some character and personality for sure.

It is a busy time of year...lots of football games, the State Fair of Texas, and Art Festivals. It is beginning to feel like fall in Texas. We were able to turn off the air conditioning this week, and were able to open the windows. I hope to go to the studio today since it is raining...have a great day.

Still on the easel....

Day 1 of painting.

Day 2 of painting.
As you can see, I have made some progress on this painting. Day 1 was alot of fun, until I realized that I was not able to see any details in the face with the reference photo. Marilyn mailed me a larger photo, and I was able to see what the hands and face were really like. I have a few more details to finish on the hat, and lots of work on the face and skin tones. I want to get the spark of personality Uncle Orville had and put in on the canvas.
I need to work on my cupcake painting, get ready for the Dutch Art Gallery Show, and do a commission piece. But, as we all know, we only paint what we are "in the mood" to paint....

contemporary cow

This painting is still on the easel. Only needs some high lights and a little more work on the eyes. This is one of the good looking cows that roamed the Martin Farm in south Texas. We had an artist's retreat there in March. As you can see, my photograph is on the left, and the 8" x 10" canvas is on the right. Not a great photo, but it gives me a chance to look at the painting. It is always good to stand back and view your art from a distance. It certainly looks better from afar than up close. I can see that I need to hit the nose and forehead with some lighter touches of paint. I also need to put the identification tag on his ear. It is orange and will blend in with his coloring. I don't know why I like cows...I don't know much about them, and I certainly don't get to see them very often since I live in the city. I probably need to name this cow...actually, I don't know if it is a male or female. I was kind of thinking of the name Maude. What do you think? I think she looks like a Maude. Let me know!!
