No Boundaries

No Boundaries
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape
Painted in the studio yesterday, with a palette knife.  Using lots of colors, I mixed impasto into the paints to give it heavy texture and help expedite the drying process.  Lots of movement and excitement when I pushed and pulled the paints.  I was painting freely, without boundaries and it felt so good!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting.  Kay

The Jordan

The Jordan
11" x 14" Oil on Gessoed Board
Contemporary Landscape
Alla Prima
My reference photo in the studio was taken about 45 years ago...and it is a familiar fishing spot in Northern Michigan for my husband.  Fly fishing is very popular on this river, and for some reason I was thinking about our summer plans...and if we would be able to take our annual trip Up North due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  This one was painted in a two hour session.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay

Boundaries
6" x 6" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Obviously this isn't one of my colorful and energizing paintings that I love to create.  This is my response and entry to a juried show, COPING WITH COVID-19 | The Artist Perspective.  I think everyone is tired and feeling Blah with the stay at home orders.  We just got an extension in Dallas County on our orders to stay at home and more social distancing until May 15th.  More painting in the studio today...Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Deb's Find

Deb's Find
8" x 8" x 2" Oil on Cradleboard
Contemporary Still Life
This ceramic pot was beautiful.  It was spotted by Deb on our recent trip to Greece, sitting in a window sill with lots of warm light hitting the pot and the leaves.  Deb gets the credit spotting it, and taking a photo of it.  I couldn't wait to paint it once I got back into the studio.  Here's my version of the ceramic pot, thanks to Deb for finding it!  Thanks for looking...have an artful day!  Kay

A Day In Saguaro

A Day In Saguaro
12" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Landscape
This Arizona desert landscape is framed up and now hangs in our home.  The location is Saguaro National Park East.  The rough landscape of the desert was fun to paint once I had my underpainting in.  I used a palette knife on the mountains, cactus and shrubs.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Roses Galore

Roses Galore
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Lots of painting, scraping, painting and knife work went into this contemporary still life painting.  Layers of oil were applied with a brush, followed by a palette knife scraping and cutting into the paint.  This floral is available and would brighten up any wall!  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this original oil.  Thanks, KMW

Second Thoughts

Second Thoughts
20" x 16" Oil on Museum Quality Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
I had painted this about a week ago, and while it was drying in the studio, I decided it really needed some high-lights on the petals, and I wasn't happy with the vase.  It looked too flat for the painting.  So I changed it up, making it a beautiful ultramarine blue.  The petals have more depth and life to them.  Here is a pic of it before I made those adjustments.

So now it is finished, and titled "Second Thoughts" since I did have second thoughts about it!  Happy Anniversary to my John!  Even though we have a stay at home order in place, we will have a toast to our 38 years!  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Here's a quote from Frida Kahlo:  "I paint flowers so they will not die."  I feel that way!  Kay

Good Vibes

Good Vibes
(thank you, Blake for the suggestion on the title!!!)
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
What do you do when you get a new palette knife?  Paint a palette knife painting!!!  I was so excited to get some new painting supplies, and since I have dropped (ruined) some of my knives, I decided to treat myself to a new one.  As I was playing with the paint, pushing and pulling the juicie oils, I came up with this abstract.  Lots of texture.  Beautiful colors.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Have a safe day.  Contact ME with any questions or comments!  Kay

Palette Knife Painting - Petals

Petals
10" x 10" Oil on Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
It was an odd Easter without seeing our kids, grandkids, church.  I went to the studio and passed my time with my palette knife.  Here's my Easter painting.  I hope you are staying home, staying healthy during this Covid 19 episode.  More from the studio today...Kay

Happy Easter and Happy Birthday!

Happy Easter and Happy Birthday!
Iris Still Life (Untitled)
20" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life - All Prima
I walked into the studio yesterday, and found that one of my studio mates left me fresh cut batch of isis' from her garden.  Thank you, Selena!  I decided to use a beautiful tablecloth that studio mate Sharon had given to me, and pulled out one of my favorite blue and white Spode pieces.
Here is my set-up.
I quickly toned the canvas, because I don't want to start with a white background.  Then immediately started drawing with my paint.
Then I started painting the shapes.
I realized that I didn't want to paint the blue and white ceramic pitcher, so I thought about a clear glass vase, then scrubbed that idea.  I wanted the focus to be the golden irises, and just a plain, simple vase would work for me.

I painted this alla prima--quickly in one session.  Good thing I did, because the arrangement changed overnight.  So, Happy Easter to everyone.  And Happy Birthday to my special husband, John!

Maid-Rite Memories

Maid-Rite Memories
20" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
Maid-Rite is midwestern burger joint...and there once was a Maid-Rite on the main street in my hometown of Macomb, Illinois.  Several years ago John and I were visiting Macomb, and I took photos of the old building.  It was in bad shape, with broken glass, pealing paint, holes in the roof --- and has been demolished.  It had a lot of character, and everyone who has ever eaten at the Maid-Rite has those memories.  I remember taking photographs of this building and I am so glad that I did, since it is nothing more than an empty grassy lot.  I wanted to capture the hometown feel of walking down Jackson Street looking up at the EAT sign.  This original oil painting is framed up and hanging in our kitchen.  It is available for purchase.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting!  Have an artful day...KMW

Landscape In My Mind

Landscape In My Mind
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is a small palette knife painting that is completed, with touches of cad red in it leading up to the focal point.  The color combinations are not my normal, as I was experimenting with some paints I had mixed up.  I had a really bad day in the studio yesterday, and my easel was not friendly.  So I am not going to post the painting that I eventually wiped after I spend three hours struggling...I will go back today and hopefully it will be a different story.  Stay safe and at home.  Artfully yours, Kay

Untitled Still Life

Untitled/Floral Still Life
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
I had to stop painting yesterday....this panel is very wet, and I need to look at it a couple of days to see if any adjustments need to be made.  Probably in the high-lights.  I took a few pics along the way. I started with a toned canvas panel, loosely drew the composition out with a filbert.  I started painting the flowers with a wide bright brush, and mixed a large amount of reds, oranges, yellows and blues for the vase.  I wanted the colors to be crisp, so I had to make every stroke count so the colors didn't get muddy.  I also wanted it to be happy and pleasant to the eye...kind of an escape with all that is going on.  This was a fun one as we are all quarantined and doing our own thing inside.  I will look at this painting and come up with a title for it...Thanks for looking at my blog.  Stay well, Kay

Tight Bunch

Tight Bunch
8" x 8" Oil on Museum Quality Panel
Contemporary Still Life
I lost my momentum on this small painting...I started it a month ago, and lost interest.  But I did put finishing touches on it yesterday in the studio.  I painted it from a small floral bouquet from our local florist.  The pale yellow rose was getting crowded by the red and pink roses.  I hope you all are well, and abiding by the stay at home rules that are in place.  Have an artful day, Kay

Morning View

Morning View
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape/Palette Knife Painting
Every morning in Naxos we woke up to this spectacular view.  The road in front of the villa was winding along the shoreline, and the winds were usually blowing full force.  In the distance you can see that beautiful little chapel perched up on an island.  With Easter approaching, I remember one of the locals telling me that Easter service is the only time this chapel is open.  I wanted to nail down the colors of Naxos, and the beautiful Aegean Sea. The use of the palette knife is perfect for this rocky terrain...lots of texture on this canvas.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

Hanging Out
40" x 30" Mixed Media on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Contemporary Abstract/Palette Knife Painting
As we are all quarantined doing our own thing, I am painting.  I took an unfinished abstract and got my oils, oil bars and graphite out, along with my palette knife and big brush.  I started seeing a clothesline and clothes whipping in the air.  It was fun to paint, and it is now drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog...contact Kay for more info.  KMW

Springtime

Springtime
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape/Palette Knife Painting
Spring is here, and I am reminded how quickly our weather changes in Texas.  This palette knife painting represents the unstable weather we have...tornadoes, flooding, extreme heat...you name it, we get it.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog...I have more new paintings on my easel in the studio.  Kay
