Floral Commission

Floral Bouquet/Commission
NFS
16" x 16" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral/Palette Knife Painting
I was asked to paint a lovely bride's bouquet...and I was happy to do so!  The bride and groom sent me photos of the wedding, with the idea that I could reproduce the bouquet on canvas.  The off-white roses are surrounded by violet crocus, tiny white flowering daisies and greenery.  I used a brush to lay out the painting, and then pulled out the palette knives so that the canvas would have plenty of texture.  I applied layers and layers of paint to give the arrangement fullness and depth.  I hope that the newly weds enjoy the floral painting, as a reminder of their very special wedding day.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

Your Cows Are Out

"Your Cows Are Out"
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Commission
Contemporary Landscape
I was asked by a collector to paint a unique location that he is very fond of.  While on a recent fly fishing trip with a friend, this was a sign that he drove by multiple times, looking for a good fishing spot.  It's close to Bluff City, Tennessee on Old Weaver Pike Road.  I can't say that I have been there, but I wanted to paint the feeling of the countryside, as if the viewer is standing in front of the sign.

Using a small photo as my reference, I wanted to get everything in the painting...including the tractor tire, the barn, the truck, the rusty old farm equipment, the saint on the fence post, and of course the imperfect and hand-made sign.

This painting has been shipped to Chicago and will be framed up before it finds it's new home.  This is a "one and only" painting - I doubt that I will ever be requested to paint something like this again.  It was fun and challenging, and I am thrilled that "Your Cows Are Out" has a new home!  Thanks for looking at my blog, Kay.

Stand Tall by Kay Wyne

Stand Tall
NFS
6" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting was given to one of my collectors...since he lives Up North, I thought that the contemporary birch trees would be the perfect subject matter for his home or condo.  Stand Tall is a palette knife painting with dynamic color and texture.  It's always great to see my paintings after they leave my studio.  Here is a pic of Jim with "Herself".
It was hard to get a good pic of the commissioned piece because the outside light shining into the living space was so bright.  Here you can see Round Lake through the window.  What a beautiful setting---my paintings look fabulous in Jim's condo!
Thanks for looking at my blog...If you would like more information on my art or a commissioned work of art, please contact ME.  Thanks, Kay

Dawn Stroll at White Rock - Sold

"Dawn Stroll at White Rock"
Sold
60" x 60" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Impressionistic Landscape Painting
This painting is a commission that I have been working on for the last month.  It is going to it's home this week!  I can't wait to see it installed in the new Dallas home.  I have a few pics of the painting process, starting with the collector's photograph.  That was the inspiration for the painting.

The photo taken by the collectors while on a morning walk.  I used the photograph as a starting point, not wanting to copy it, but to paint my own interpretation in my own style of the sun rising at the lake.
I toned the BIG canvas with transparent oils.  60" x 60" is so big that I had to work on the ladder at times.  It was a good thing that I had purchased huge amounts of paint before I started this painting.

Here I started with laying in my paints.  With the oils I needed to get my darks in and work on establishing the horizon line.  I was wanting to achieve a good balance of abstraction and  representation in this painting, as I worked with Karen Parks, with Associate Interiors and her clients.
Everyday I would go into the studio and mix, mix, mix colors - wanting to achieve a harmonious painting when it comes to the colors.
Once I got some paint on the canvas, I would use brushes, knives and other tools to move the paint around.  I used some plastic tools used for ceramics to move the paint around.
The painting changed daily.  Once I started putting the tall grass in the foreground, I realized that my horizon was lost.  So I went back in and reworked that area.  Used lots of paint and knife.
The water had reflections and I wanted to get those in, but also make the body of water interesting.  There are some variations in the lines and brush strokes in the water...I don't know that the photograph really picks them up.
Still working on the horizon, not wanting to put lots of detail in it.  I believe the photograph had some lights, and homes in the distance. All I wanted to do is imply the layers of the shoreline, trees and sky melting in the distance.
Here is a close-up of the horizon.
Close-up of the sky.
The tall grass was so much fun to paint.  I cut loose on that, making the blades of grass different colors, sizes and shapes.  Lots of layers, using a palette knife.
More sky and palette knife work.  Once the painting was approved, the sides of the canvas were painted Portland Grey Dark, then it was varnished.  That's a short summary of how this painting, "Dawn Stroll at White Rock" was created and evolved.  I enjoyed working with  Karen Parks, ASID with Associate Interiors and the collectors to create a piece of art that will hang in the contemporary home, near White Rock Lake.

P.S.  Here is an update:  "Dawn Stroll at White Rock" was installed yesterday....and here is a pic of Karen, myself and Kristy.

Abstract Nursery Art Project by Kay Wyne

Contemporary Abstract Nursery Paintings
Acrylic on Sixteen Cotton Panels
This is my latest nursery project for our new grandson.  I started with sixteen 6" x 6" RayMar Cotton Panels, painted the background white and slowly started painting shapes with the colors my daughter picked out.  She requested that the images be nonrepresentational with a certain color palette.  As I worked on the small surfaces, I kept adding and working the paint, until I felt like it was complete.  That happened three times.  I normally paint in oils, so working with the fast drying acrylics was a challenge.  I picked a simple white frame for each panel, and here is the result. I wanted a very clean but colorful presentation for the wall.
I hope to be back in the studio today, as I have a show I an upcoming show in February.  I have several new pieces to post for the paint challenge, so check back in with me tomorrow.  Thanks, Kay Wyne

Garbage Truck & Dumpster - Commission - SOLD

This is a 16" x 20" oil painting on canvas. I was commissioned to paint...and I must say that sometime back in September I was struggling. I called the client who wanted this as a Christmas gift for her husband to check in and gift her a report on the progress of the painting. I was not real jazzed about the subject matter, and wanted to make the painting interesting to the viewer. She told me that I could do whatever I wanted with the painting, but the dumpster, truck and lettering needed to be included. She also told me that she did not think there was anything sexy about a garbage truck!!! (oh how true) Anyway, this painting is finished and was under the Christmas tree for the Brown Family. Thanks for viewing this blog...I am heading back to the studio today to throw some paint around now that all of my holiday guests have left. Have an artful day. Kay

Horizon Series: Abstract #23

Horizon Series: Abstract #23
20" x 20" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

This painting has deep rich colors, layers and layers of texture. It is on a gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is needed. Ready to hang. I made it to the studio yesterday, but did not get alot accomplished. One of those days. My head was hurting and I couldn't get very excited about my commission pieces. I worked on an abstract and took some pictures. I would like to finish up some paintings for the upcoming Cedars Open Studio Tour: http://www.cedarsopenstudios.com/. This all day event is so much fun. Over 69 artists are participating this year, so it should be a great time! Studio Art and Soul is always jam-packed with lots of visitors and freinds. Lots ofart, food, beer, wine!!! I hope that you mark your calendar for Saturday, November 20th. Thanks for viewing this blog!

R4 Taking a Look

R4 Taking a Look
Commission
Oil on canvas
12" x 24"
This painting is finished! The location of the hiker is in the northeast, possibly Maine. The reference photograph that I had was not the best quality, but I think I captured the grandness and beauty of nature The hiker is standing on a ledge, looking out, taking a break. It will be drying for a while before I can ship to my client.
Have an artful day!
