The flowers on this prickly pear are like a rainbow, full of color variation.  "Prickly Pear" took many studio sessions, as I had to let each layer of oil dry before I came back with another layer.  The foil is fun to paint on, but rather slippery for my brush.  I used a palette knife to lay in the long sharp needles of the cactus.  This painting is drying in the studio, and once it is varnished, it will be available for purchase.  Thanks for looking at my art.  Kay

All framed up and hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas, "Cactus Patch" is a handsome painting.  The photograph I used (thanks to one of my studio mates) was the front yard of an old house in Austin, Texas.  I purposefully left out the house so that I could concentrate of the blooms on the massive prickly pear.  Contact the gallery for more info!  Thanks for looking, Kay.

Contemporary Landscape Painting

A recent trip to Arizona gave me the perfect opportunity to get some photographs of the amazing Saguaro Cactus.  The title, "The Guardian" hit me as my cousin Chuck told me that in his mind, the huge Saguaros as the guardians of the desert.  These gigantic cacti are located in Tucson and the surrounding desert...and OMG their presence is everywhere!  

I wanted to put down on canvas what the Saguaro looked like when we were standing next to it...the trunk was old, rigid and weathered, but as you look up to the newer growth, the limbs were small, smoother and more colorful.   I also wanted to capture the light of the desert. Here are a few photographs of my progress from start to finish on this canvas.
