Time To Mask Up

Time To Mask Up
30" x 24" Oil, Oil Sticks and Charcoal on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
I pulled out this canvas that I lost interest in months ago---which was originally a Greek seascape.  I turned it on it's side and went for something different.  I started drawing shapes with the charcoal and the oil sticks, and a few heads and body shapes appeared.  Then I saw a person with a mask, so most of the individuals have masks on.  So appropriate for us right now.  Fun colors and patterns appear.  I believe I am finished with this canvas...It is drying in the studio.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  Kay

Let's Talk About It

 Let's Talk About It
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Photo Inspiration Credit: Renn Lawrence
A pic by photographer Renn Lawrence really captured these two beauties standing in tall grass.  I have been wanting to paint these bovine beauties for a long time.  The pandemic has certainly given me the opportunity and time to do that.  Lee Small Fine Art in Ft. Worth, Texas represents both Renn and I....and Lee is excellent at placing original art in homes and offices.  This painting is drying in the studio, and will look great framed up.  Contact Lee or ME for more info on this painting.

Filerup

Filerup
12" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
Many years ago John and I were exploring the wide open roads of New Mexico.  We came across an old gas station/trading post with vintage gas pumps and signs.  I took the opportunity to take a few pics, as it was a rustic and nostalgic location, located close to the Rio Grande River.  I cropped down the photograph and made my own composition..."Fil Er Up". I loved the retro colors and the feel of the trading post.  I might have to paint another one---same location, different perspective.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.  I hope you are staying safe.  Kay

Isn't Life Peachy?

Isn't Life Peachy?
24" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life Painting
This is my third peachy painting.  My inspiration for this came from one of my collector's backyard. --- Thank you Emily!  I wanted to create depth and did that layering the colors.  When I look up into the tree I see pieces of light, shadows and overlapping leaves, branches and peaches.  I want the viewer to imagine standing on the ground, looking up at a full branch loaded with beautiful peaches.  At the end of the painting, I decided to add charcoal drawing on top of the brush strokes.  This painting is drying in the studio, and will be framed up!  Contact Kay for more info.  Thanks for looking at my art.  KMW

P.S.  Here is a pic of this painting framed up!

On Cloud Nine

On Cloud Nine
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract/Palette Knife Painting
Thick chunks of paint were applied with my palette knife, and then a rubber tool made for ceramics was used to move the paint around.  I mixed all the colors, and wanted them to be harmonious in relationship to each other.  This one is drying in the studio.  Contact Kay

White Rock Lake in November

White Rock Lake in November
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Panel
Plein Air Painting
The weather in Dallas has been great--and instead of going to the studio, I set up my easel at the lake.  I picked a spot that had a winding bike path, trees and of course a view of the water.  I had to work fast because it was late afternoon with good shadows, but the light was changing.  I spent about 45 minutes on this small study.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay

Plein Air at White Rock Lake

Yesterday was a perfect plein air day at White Rock Lake.  I did finish this painting, and here is a shot of my progress, as I worked quickly.  I was concentrating on the long afternoon shadows spilling over the bike path.  The weather was perfect and I had plenty of passer-byers who stopped to chat and take a peek.  This is a 10" x 10" Oil on RayMar panel.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Pleasant Surprise

Pleasant Surprise
37 1/4" x 28 1/4" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting

One of my collectors bought a house in Dallas recently, and she did not know that she had a fruit-bearing peach tree in her backyard....until the tree was producing peaches.  Emily loves her house, and the fruit on the tree was a pleasant surprise for her!  I snapped some photos of the backyard tree, and decided to paint the beautiful fruits once I got into the studio.  This was a fun painting for me because of the color palette.  I loved mixing the corals, reds, apricots, ochres and leafy greens.  The violets, greys and savanah browns were fun to mix up. Thank you, Emily for letting me photograph your tree!   This painting is drying in the studio.  I couldn't wait to see what it looked like all framed up!

Here it is framed up in a gold leaf frame with linen liner.
The over-all size of frame is 45 1/4' x 35 1/2"

Country Church

Country Church
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
Majorville Illinois (in Hancock County) is the location, and the photo that I used as inspiration was taken in 1976.  I believe this was a Methodist Church with a cemetery on the property.  I wanted to capture the weathered look of the church, the simplicity of the entrance.  The black and white photo caught a few of the headstones in the cemetery and the grass and bushes seemed to be over-grown.  I used a palette knife and brush with my oils to put this old country church on canvas.
Here is the reference photo depicting a cold dreary fall day in the midwest.

I believe that the church is no longer standing, but the historical cemetery is still there along with the red brick entrance pillars.  Thanks to Jay for taking the photo.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  KMW

Cactus Patch

Cactus Patch
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral
All framed up and hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas, "Cactus Patch" is a handsome painting.  The photograph I used (thanks to one of my studio mates) was the front yard of an old house in Austin, Texas.  I purposefully left out the house so that I could concentrate of the blooms on the massive prickly pear.  Contact the gallery for more info!  Thanks for looking, Kay.

2020

2020
40" x 40" Oil, Oil Bars, Charcoal on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
I have had this canvas on and off my easel all year long.  It started out as a large contemporary floral.  It was a painting that had several composition issues, so I used it as a backdrop for an abstract that has many marks on it.  The color, texture, shapes and lines are applied in layers.  It's a complex painting, with images hidden.  I deliberately pushed the repetition of shapes and pattern.  It changed over the past year, and I can call it finished.  I enjoyed the process and the time spent at the easel in this crazy pandemic and election year of 2020.  Contact Kay for more info on this painting.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  KMW
