My Birthday Gift!
I had a couple of visitors drop by the studio and give me a birthday gift....a shadow box of the memoriabilia from Taste of the NFL. The shadow box is full of ticket stubs, invitations, and trinkets from the Taste of the NFL party. We all attended, and had a wonderful weekend in Ft. Worth during Super Bowl weekend in February. Thanks to Lindsay, Wes, Blake, and Merriam for such a fun and thoughtful gift. I guess after watching me in the framing business for years, they learned how to assemble a shadow box! I love it that it was made by my kiddos! Thanks so much.....have an artful day.

On my easel...
After day 2 of painting on this canvas, I am not sure of the direction I will be going. I see several images in the paint right now. I used the palette knife to lay the color on...although it isn't thick and textured at this point. Hoping to make something interesting out of this canvas today. I have three new pieces that need to be photographed. They are all drying since I varnished them yesterday. Thanks for viewing this blog, and have a good weekend. Kay

Falling, Falling, Falling
Falling, Falling, Falling
This painting is signed and is drying....and it will need a frame. The canvas size is 18" x 24". I think a black floater frame might look really cool on this painting, but I will need to play around with some mouldings. Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. I hope to post some more contemporary aspen paintings tomorrow.

The Point
The Point
32" x 32" Palette Knife Painting
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This painting started out as a very simple seascape. My inspiration for this painting was a photograph of Harbor Springs, Michigan. The photograph was of the beautiful sky, Lake Michigan and Harbor Point. My painting went a little abstract, but I see the water, sand, sky and the point. This painting has a lot of texture since I applied layers and layers of paint with the knife. It is drying at the studio, and when I look at this painting, it reminds me how special our summer in Northern Michigan were. Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. Have a great weekend! Stay cool. Morning Aspens
Morning Aspens
48" x 72" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This painting is finished and hanging in our home to dry. When I started this painting, I had three things going on in my head about the direction that I wanted to take. I wanted to use my brush, not the palette knife. I made a decision to put green in the painting, even though it is my least favorite color and I have issues with it when I paint. I wanted to experiment with transparent colors. So, keeping these three things in my mind, I set out to paint this colorful and contemporary abstract aspen painting. Getting the paints to blend and progress from one color to another was easy with the brush. I used some new wide, flat brushes. I did not want texture and thick paint. I was able to limit the green by putting the green in first, and letting it sit...I did not go back in and rework any of the green after the initial application. I did use the palette knife on the tree trunks, but did a lot of scraping-not leaving huge amounts of paint on the canvas. I was pleased with the outcome of this painting, and like the way the colors are bouncing around. I hope that you find this painting pleasing to the eye. Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. Beach Bums
Beach Bums...A commission that has been delivered. It is an oil painting on a 12" x 12" gallery wrap canvas. This painting was inspired by a photograph of the ocean while a couple was sitting on the beach. I loved this picture, and when the couple got engaged, sweet Sarah asked me to paint it so she could give to Taylor as a wedding gift. So, here it is, and Taylor and Sarah are married, moved in a new apartment on the east coast and starting a new life together. Congratulations to Sarah and Taylor! Kay

On Fire
On Fire
Oil on 48" x 48" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting
On Fire not only describes this painting, but my day. I had a cluster goof-ups that happened over and over...It must been the red hot Texas heat getting to me. On Fire is a contemporary abstract painting that started out as a horizon painting....and the horizon is there. But, I saw trees in a cluster.....and then they were on fire. So if you stand back from the painting and look at it, you can see the forest, the fire in several places smoldering, and the smoke. This was an exciting painting to paint because it was constantly changing. I used a limited color palette along with the palette knife. When you are viewing this painting up close, you can see the depth and the texture. Thanks for viewing this blog and my art! Kay

Quiet Times - Palette Knife Painting
This palette knife painting is finished. It is on a large canvas, 48" x 72". I used my palette knives (see photograph below) and my oils to create this painting. I wanted a soft and quiet color palette for this painting...which is a complete detour from what I usually paint. Actually, someone at the studio commented that they wouldn't know it was a Kay Wyne painting because of the colors and application of the paint. I guess I was in the mood for something different.
I was gathering up my knifes before I left the studio, and couldn't resist taking a pic. Different sizes, different shapes, different brands....and just like my brushes, I have my favorite knives. Yesterday was a fun day. I was painting en plein air downtown Dallas. The group I was with painted the Old Red Courthouse. It was a challenge with all the architectural details on the old building. I had several meetings and then got some afternoon painting in at the studio. More pics of more paintings to come! Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. Have a great day!

Horizon Series: Winter Aspens
Horizon Series: Winter Aspens
24" x 30" Oil
Gallery Wrap Canvas
This palette knife painting is an drying at the studio. I purposely picked earthy, neutrals for the palette.(A different direction than the bright, bold palette that I normally use.) The colors are mixed, layered and applied with a palette knife. By the way, I just got two new large knifes...they look like weapons! I have five new palette paintings sitting on the easels...so more to come! Thanks for viewing this blog and my art. Have a good Monday....Kay

Horizon Series: Abstract Aspens
Horizon Series: Abstract Aspens
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Palette Knife Painting
This painting is drying right now, and it is full of earthy colors, texture and lines. This painting evolved after I was experimenting with some mixed and muted oils. As with most of my abstracts, I have a horizon line on the canvas. I had blocked in some geometric shapes, and after day two started seeing aspens. Then more aspens appeared. It is a different direction than most of my bright and colorful aspens. I was encouraged to use this palette by several observers, and painted another canvas very similar. I will be posting that painting tomorrow. I hope to have a full day in the studio...thanks for taking a look at this blog. Kay at 214-532-0325 or kay@kwyne.com.

Wild For You
Wild For You
30" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Palette Knife Painting
Lots of color falling around these abstract aspens! Deep plums, blues, hot pink, warm reds to cool blues and vibrant greens and yellow are all over this canvas. It took a long time for this one to dry because of the thick application of the paint. Thanks for viewing this blog, and if you would like to purchase any of my art, please feel free to contact me.

Kaleidoscope
Kaleidoscope
Contemporary Abstract Painting
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This medium size canvas is a take-off of one smaller painting that I did three years ago. The first one that I painted was on a 18" x 18" canvas, and I had let my daughter Lindsay have it. She got attached to it, and doesn't want to give it up. I guess that is a good thing! Anyway, this painting is dry and ready to be shipped today to the gallery in Santa Fe.
I liked the movement and intense colors in this painting. The viewer might see skeins of yarn, or something else...I wanted the viewer's eye to move around on the canvas. I used a very large, flat brush on this one...it was fun to play with so many colors and blend them together. Thanks for viewing this blog! Have an artful day. Kay
