Just Because

Just Because
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Palette Knife Painting
My inspiration for this painting was a beautiful arrangement that son in-law Wes gave to daughter Lindsay. I asked what the occasion was......."just because" was the answer that I got. I used thick strokes with the palette knife.
Here is a close-up of the painting....the paint is built up on the canvas. Contact Pam Massar at The Dutch Art Gallery Dallas TX if you are interested in purchasing.  Thanks for viewing this art blog.  Have a good day...Kay

Flutter

Flutter
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting
Red dragonflies are all over the gardens at the Dallas Arboretum.  I worked off of a photograph taken by friend Mark Malone.  It was an amazing photo, and I went abstract with it.  I exaggerated the colors, and implied that the dragonfly was fluttering over some flowers.  The oils were applied with a palette knife so there is plenty of texture on the canvas.  Sides of the canvas are painted, so framing is optional.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

Joyful

Joyful
18" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
This contemporary oil painting has been drying at the studio.  It is on a chunky (2 1/2") stretcher bar, and sides of the canvas are painted.  So frame is optional.  The colors are crisp and clean.  I was careful not to mix my oils too much, which could lead to the dreaded MUD.  The corals, oranges and rosey colors pop with the grey/blue background.  Hints of green, turquoise and whites make the florals come alive.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for checking out this blog!  Kay

Layers of Color - Sold

Layers of Color
Sold at Dutch Art Gallery!
20" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is paint sold last week at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.
I really liked this painting, because it was fun to paint....started with
a brush but in the end, the palette knife took control.  And, of
course it was colorful and had lots of texture.  Pam Massar,
owner at the gallery framed it up and it looked handsome.  I am glad
that this painting, Layers of Color has a new home.
Thank you, Pam!

On My Easel...

Landscape Painting On My Easel
30" x 30" Canvas
On my easel...this is a 30" x 30" oil painting.  I took photographs along the way because it is good for me to look at the stages I go through while painting on my computer.  This is where I left off yesterday.  There is glare where the wet paint is.  Here are a few shots of how my day in the studio went:

First thing I did was tone the canvas with some earthy orange and cad yellow.  Then started drawing with some raw umber on my filbert.  Just trying to lay it all out.  No details.  Put in a few darks.  I had plenty of diox and olive green on my palette, so picked up those colors to draw.

I wanted a road so the eye would be lead into the painting, and started mixing some greys, violets and turquoise for the sky.  The sky got really thick and juicy quickly. Used wide brushes, mostly filberts and brights.

At this point I couldn't decide how to make it more interesting, so I pulled out my palette knife and scraped and moved the paint around.  It was just what I needed for the sky.  Here is a close-up of the sky....lots of colors mixed together right on the canvas. I am trying to not lose my values....something that happens when I don't stand back away from the painting and look at what is going on.  More tomorrow...thanks for looking at this blog.  Contact Kay with any questions or comments.  Thanks!

Windswept

Windswept
30" x 30" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Floral Landscape
I just finished this colorful floral landscape yesterday in the studio.  I want to look at it a couple of days to see if I need to make any changes.  I wanted to experiment with the lavenders and greens in this painting, and when I started used a limited palette.  After drawing and putting in the first layer of paint, I added some ochre and magenta, then started mixing all of my colors.  I used a large filbert brush all the way, and I wanted to create movement and wind throughout the floral fields.  I have a beautiful gold frame to put on it, and can't wait to see what it looks like all framed up.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks, Kay

Impulsive

Implusive
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Landscape
Lots of color, paint and line going on with this canvas.  The vivd colors bounce off of each other and make the unusual color combinations interesting.  There are lines and shapes scraped into the thick paint.  Sculpting tools, palette knives and brushes were my tools of choice.  I used plenty of impasto so that the paint would dry and have lots of body.  This painting is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Kay

20" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting is still on my easel, but I signed it and it needs to dry.  I put out greens, whites and grays and mixed piles and piles of paint on my palette, grabbed the palette knife and started with my darks first.  I pushed and pulled the paint, added a small amount of raw umber and cad red to the palette.  I had not planned on going this far with the painting, but once I started, I couldn't stop.  I have a beautiful frame to put on it...will post it framed up when it dries.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.

Oh Happy Day!

Oh Happy Day!
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Floral Still Life
18" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
I can honestly say that this painting was painted from the heart.  It wasn't hard to paint.  It didn't take long.  It just came out of me.  And it makes me smile,  just as our family news on Sunday.  I wanted to paint something beautiful and lasting....so I went through my reference photos decided on a still life, and picked out a limited color palette of grays, greens and violets.  And just let it go.  The paint is applied with the knife and is really thick and textured.  This painting is drying at the studio.  Contact Kay Wyne for information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog.

Enchanting

Enchanting
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Landscape Painting
Enchanting is one of those paintings that went through many stages.  I used a large, heavy duty gallery wrap canvas, therefore the sides of the canvas (about 2 1/2") are also painted.  In my mind, I separated the painting in three parts:  sky/background, mid-ground, and foreground.  All three areas of the canvas had to be different sizes...I didn't want three equal parts.  I wanted the horizon to melt into the sky and recede.  The mid-ground needed to have someone color, but not as much as the foreground.  I used the palette knife and impasto on the florals to create texture and interest.  This painting is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, TX.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay

Blue Skies Above

Blue Skies Above
24" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
Blue Skies Above is a very painterly painting.  I used broad sweeping brush strokes on the sky to give it movement and depth.  I didn't skimp on the application of paint, as there is texture built up on the canvas.  The clouds fade into the horizon.  This painting is part of a current exhibit at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Contact ME or Pam at the the gallery for purchasing information.  Thanks for looking at this blog...Kay

Windy December

Windy December
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
En Plein Air Palette Knife Painting
This is probably one of my favorite plein air paintings.  I have so many paintings that I started outside, but was unable to finish.  I stuck it out on this one, even though it was a very cold and windy December day at White Rock Lake.  I like the feel of the painting...kind of moody, and because I used the palette knife, there was a lot of scraping and modeling of the oils.  This painting is available, and looks great in a dark mahogany wood frame with a gold inside liner.  Contact Kay for more information.  Thanks, Kay
