Lazy Afternoon

Lazy Afternoon
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
18" x 18" Oil on Canvas
I got my palette knives out yesterday and worked on the landscape with the two cattle.  I would of put some tall grass in the foreground, but the canvas is way too wet with thick paint.  I had to use a very small knife for the the cows to get the small shapes in.  Thanks for looking at my art....email me if you are interested in purchasing.  This is Day 24 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days.  Thanks....KMW

On my easel...

On my easel...
Illinois Pastoral Scene
this was a quick under-painting on a 18" x18" canvas.  For some reason I had a hard time painting yesterday...I want to start with the palette knife today and get some thick layers of paint on.  My reference photo that I was using was from a trip to Illinois last November.  A drive through the countryside landed us on an Amish farm.  I thought these herefords were interesting, because of the markings and usually you don't see cattle lying in the pasture.  Here is my photo:

This was a fun piece to work on...It was submitted to The Catholic Foundational Plaza Art Competition in Dallas.  Every year a piece of work is chosen for public art, and is blown up and installed on the side of a building.  This piece received an Honorable Mention from the judging panel.  Congrats to the winner, Jim Keyes.  This is day 22 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Day Painting Challenge.  Thanks for looking at my blog...yesterday was a milestone on my blog because I hit 100,000 visitor views!  Kay

Zest

Zest
16" x 16" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
I got to the studio yesterday and felt that I
needed to punch-up the color on this
painting.  It needed zest.  So I mixed some reds
and pinks, trying to get the right coral color.
I added some carribean blue, diox purple,
and pulled out a white oil bar.  Done!
This is day 21 for the 30/30 Paint Challenge with Leslie Saeta.
I got on a major cleaning, framing, thowing-out junk kick yesterday,
with a busy October coming up, I need to be organized.
I found about a dozen half-finished (or half-started)
paintings.  Maybe tomorrow's post will be
one of those that I found.  Thanks for looking
at my art....Kay

Inviting

Inviting
24" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Thick layers of paint cover the canvas, giving it color and texture.  My inspiration for this painting was a field of aspens in Evergreen, Colorado.  Sharon and I stayed on a working ranch, and had plenty of wildlife and beautiful landscape to paint.  Here is a pic of the painting in progress:
I painted the sky, foreground and trees with a large brush, then went into the painting with the palette knife and lots of paint.  In the end I punched it up with more color.  This is day 19 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge with Leslie Saeta.   Thanks for looking....contact Kay for more info on this painting.  I hope to be back in the studio....I have an abstract that I am working on for tomorrow's post. Deliberate Distraction

Deliberate Distraction
18" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
There are many directions this painting could of taken,
but yesterday's final session with it took on more color,
more organic shapes.  When I began this painting months
ago, I was painting a herd of horses, which you can see.
I got into some nuetrals and earth tones, then in the last
few days put some loopy colorful lines overlapping and
pulling the piece together.  I thought that the color
punched it up.  The last two days I have been
pulled away from my easel, therefore the title, Deliberate
Distraction.  Thanks for looking at this blog and
the art posted here.  You can email me for more
information on this painting.  Thanks, Kay

Over The Hill In Cransfill Gap
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel

This painting might not be completed....it is drying
at the studio right now.  I may put a fence in,
but I need to think about it for a few days.
Mike and Missy Rogers took a fabulous photo
last year of this Lutheran church, and there was
an old country fence....so that might go in
after it dries.  This is day 16 of the

Sunflower

Sunflower
12" x 12" Oil on Canvas
Today is Sept. 14th....and day 14 of the 30 Day Painting Challenge with Leslie Saeta.  My inspiration for this little painting was a photograph that was sent to my by my sister.  She has beautiful sunflowers in her backyard in Illinois.  It was a good exercise, and I would like to paint a large painting with a grouping of sunflowers in the future.

Here is one of the pics sent to me...I will be in the studio today working on painting #15 and some pieces for upcoming shows.  It seems like October is packed with art shows, receptions, studio tours, etc.  You can email me here if you have any questions about this painting.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay

Yesterday in the studio I was painting, and in
the mood for something fun, colorful and whimsical.

20" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is Day 10 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.
Yesterday I got my palette knife out and a larger canvas...
which works for me so much better than a small one.
I did start this painting with a brush, but decided
that the knife would give it some interesting
texture.  Contact Kay for more information
on this painting.  Thanks for viewing...
I will be in the studio working on

I used a #12 Filbert on this canvas, so there are wide brushstrokes,
and very little detail.  I see geometric shapes and color when I look
at the New Mexico landscape.  Thanks for looking at the paintings I post....

After spending this week in Santa Fe, I had to paint
the colorful landscape.  We flew back to the Texas

and went to the studio to paint.  Had to paint that
beautiful landscape of New Mexico.
This painting is loaded with color and texture,
and I am covered in paint as I blog!

Coming Home
8" x 16" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel

The cattle are walking up through the pasture
to the barn, thus the title, Coming Home.

Fair Park

Fair Park
10" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Plein Air Painting
Location was the Automobile Building,
Fair Park in Dallas, Texas
Today's painting for the 30 Paintings in 30 Days.

Here is my set-up at the park.  I wanted the statue to
be the focal point of the painting.  I usually put more
paint on the canvas, but I was trying to lay out the
building and get the the architecture somewhat
correct.  It was a beautiful clear day....and I amped
up the color of the sky a little bit.  Anyone who knows
me knows that BLUE is my favorite color.

City Chicken Coop

City Chicken Coop
10" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Plein Air Painting on location at Heritage Village
in Dallas, Texas.  I was with a group of fellow
artists painting in Heritage Village (or Old City
Park if you have lived in Dallas a while).
The chickens were very lively and did not
stand still for me.  I was perched up on a balcony
of a building next to the coop when painting.
I took a short break and took a pic of the progress.
We were painting early in the morning because
the heat and humidity was high.

LJB Ranch

LBJ Ranch
8" x 16" Oil on Panel
This small painting was inspired by a Hill Country trip
last spring.  On a driving tour of the LBJ Ranch I
took some great pictures of the cattle.
I wanted to get the colors right on this painting,
and not get fussy on the details.
The Texas landscape is beautiful on the ranch
and the cattle are amazing.
This is painting #2 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge!
Thanks for looking at this blog....
Have a good and safe holiday.

White Rock Lake Boats

White Rock Lake Boats
16" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
This painting is the first in a series of landscapes.  I am starting the Leslie Saeta 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge and it begins on September 1st!  I decided to paint landscapes so that I would have a theme and I have some wonderful places to go and paint in Dallas.  I used lots of juicy oils in this painting, and wanted it to be loose and colorful.  More tomorrow....join me and about 300 other artists painting for Leslie's challenge...it is fun and helps you paint everyday.  Thanks for viewing....KMW
