Color of Summer

Color of Summer
10" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape Painting
Pushing, pulling, scraping and laying in the oils with my palette knife gives this painting an impressionistic feeling.  I started with an underpainting using a brush.  After looking at it for a couple of months on my easel, I decided I needed to take a different approach and repainted it with the knife.  I am much more satisfied with the outcome, especially with the color relationships.  The burnt orange contrasting against the violet and greens makes it pop. The colors of the landscape remind me of how a hot and dry summer day feels....therefore, the name, "Color of Summer".  I can't wait to put a frame on this panel once I varnish it.  This painting will be for sale once it dries.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks, Kay

Lost

Lost
12" x 16" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Floral Landscape
I named this painting "Lost" because I was totally lost in it with my palette knife.  Lost in a good way, just letting my mixing skills kick in, and allowing  the painting to happen.  The colors are harmonious because I mixed my piles of luscious oils as I worked through the canvas.  My palette was covered with greens, lavenders, greys and corals.  This landscape painting couldn't get much more abstract, as I was focused on the colors and how they looked in relationship to each other.  There is plenty of texture and paint built up on the canvas, creating more interest for the viewer.  This painting is drying at the studio.  Contact ME with any comments or questions.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Eat Your Veggies

Eat Your Veggies
6" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Still Life
This is from a painting challenge...Different Strokes from Different Folks Challenge was a photograph of a platter of summer vegetables. I painted my interpretation of the photograph using oil paints on a 6” x 8” cotton panel…lots of luscious oils layered on with brushes. It’s good to have a deadline on a project like this challenge…it pushes me a little bit to finish up a painting to submit. I never seem to have a problem starting a painting, but sometimes I am not motivated to work through a painting and complete it. I had a good time painting this challenge, and it is so much fun looking at the dozens of artists who have posted their work.   Just like we are all different, so is our artwork. We all see things differently, and paint them differently.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Colors Of My World - sold

Colors of My World
8" x 12" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Sold
I was revisiting some of my floral landscapes, and although this painting is sold, it is one of my favorites.  The florals fade into the background, with the vibrant colors changing as they would in nature.  I did a lot of scraping, pushing and pulling of the oils with this canvas.  I am getting my gear ready for some plein air painting...more landscapes!  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Have a great day....Kay

Flamboyant Feathers

Flamboyant Feathers
10" x 10" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Series
I just pulled this colorful guy off the easel, and he is drying in the studio.  This rooster was so much fun to paint, with almost every color on my palette on the canvas...I kept the lines disjointed, loose, all with different size brushes.  I started with a dark background (my new thing) which makes the foreground pop.  Flamboyant Feathers is for sale....contact ME for more info on this guy.  Framing is optional...he looks good as is, and ready for a new home.  Thanks for looking, Kay  p.s.  there might be a little glare on the right side of this photo...I may need to retake.

Oh Happy Day!

Oh Happy Day!
18" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life Painting
I loved painting this palette knife painting.  It was a day when everything fell into place and I the painting process was so much fun.  I was wanting to explore the greens, muddy greys and violets.  Spending a lot of time mixing my oils, I limited myself to various shades of those colors only.  The horizontal format was fun to work on...a change from my favorite square format.  This painting was part of an exhibit at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas and is still on display there.  Thanks for looking at my art....Kay

Afternoon Delight at Dutch Art Gallery

Afternoon Delight
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Yesterday was the Artists' Reception at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas for the "It's A Small World" exhibit.  There was a great turn-out, and this painting, "Afternoon Delight" took third place in the jurying.  (A total surprise for me, since I haven't won anything in a long time!!!)  Judges were Steve Hahn and Ellie Taylor, both fabulous artists.  Here is a pic of gallery owner Pam Massar, Ellie, Steve and I with my framed painting.
It was so much fun to meet some new collectors and artists throughout the afternoon.  It was especially fun to have friend Gwen Bell take second place and studio partner Sharon Hodges take first place in the judging.
Sharon Hodges taking home a blue ribbon!
That cheeseburger was fabulous!!!
Pam Massar, Steve Hahn, Gwen Bell with her fabulous painting "Dog Days", and Ellie Taylor.  If you missed the opening reception, please stop by the gallery to see all of the small paintings in the show...they are wonderful.  To top off my afternoon, three of my rooster paintings sold...they flew the coop and now have a new home.  A big thank you to Pam and her staff!  Thanks for looking at this blog...send any comments or questions my way.  Kay

Sunshine

Sunshine
10" x 10" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Painting
I have been experimenting with dark backgrounds, and this rooster pops with such a dramatic contrast.  I named this rooster Sunshine because of all of the colors in his feathers and comb.  He reminds me of a colorful sunny day.  The sides of the canvas are also painted black, so a frame is not necessary.  Contact Kay for purchasing info...Sunshine is drying at the studio before he takes off.

Georgie Boy - Sold!

Georgie Boy
Sold
12" x 12" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Painting
George has flown away from Dutch Art Gallery, and I am thrilled to report that he has a new home!  Thanks to gallery owner Pam Massar for selling Georgie Boy to a Dallas collector.  George is a handsome Buff Orpington rooster, and is the mascot at our local Gecko Hardware Store in Lake Highlands.  I painted this 12" x 12" canvas several months ago in the gallery with George sitting on the counter.  I wanted to get his beautiful feathers and full body in this painting.  I loved layering the paint to get a full-chested and fluffy George on canvas using my palette knife.  Thanks for looking at my blog...I guess I need to paint another Georgie soon!  Kay

Contemporary Landscape

Contemporary Landscape
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
(Untitled)
This painting is finished.  I think.  I would like to take a few days to let it sit on my easel, giving me a chance to live with it and make some minor changes.  I also need to name it - so if you have any suggestions, I am open-minded about that, and would love to hear from you.  My color palette with just about every color in the book....lots of violets, reds, greens, ochres, turquoise, raspberry ....it is all in there.  Meanwhile, I am working on a couple of roosters....Thanks for looking at this blog.  Contact KAY for more info on this painting.  Kay
