Grey Day by Kay Wyne

Grey Day
36" x 36" Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
Layers of muted greys, greens, and lavenders cover this large canvas in wide brush strokes.  There is some palette knife work, giving it texture.  The color palette that I used is not my usual----these colors were mixed and greyed down, all very muddy with subtle changes.  (The carribean blue, violets, purples, rose, naphthol red, and indian yellow were put away---out of my reach!)  I think this is a moody painting, and very interesting to view.  This canvas does not require a frame, as the deep sides are painted and it is ready to hang!  This painting is available for purchase.  Contact Kay Wyne for more info.  Thanks for looking!  Kay

Afternoon Delight - sold - by Kay Wyne

Afternoon Delight
Sold
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral Landscape
"Afternoon Delight" is one of my all-time favorite paintings.  I remember painting this in the studio, and the whole process was fun and exciting.  Using a palette knife all the way, I used it to mix my paints and to apply the paints on the panel.  Some days are fun and easy at the easel, and other days are challenging, frustrating and not so much fun....and I think that the end result usually tells the viewer some of that.  I am working on some new projects in the studio this week...Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay Wyne

Lake View by Kay Wyne

Lake View
18" x 24" Oil on Canvas
I painted this landscape about 25 years ago...it is framed and hanging in our home.  I like this painting for a few reasons---I know it isn't a great painting, but it holds memories of summers in Michigan for me, and I have put in hundred of hours of easel time since I painted "Lake View".  For me, it is also a visual record of my painting style, and how after all these years it has changed.  I think I will paint this same scene in the studio and then en plein air this summer.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay Wyne

Flower Power by Kay Wyne

Flower Power
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Painting
A visit to the Dallas Arboretum gave me all the inspiration I needed for this canvas.  I decided that I needed to tone my canvas with a diluted Permanent Rose, then I was ready to start drawing on the canvas.  I used raw umber, olive green and violet to place the flowers and lay-out my road map.

I started with my transparent oils and put a couple of layers on, getting my dioxazine violet,  magenta, olive green, and permanent rose.  The background fades and is somewhat out of focus to create some distance on the canvas.  I mixed up about six different piles of greens, starting with sap, olive, and adding cad yellow and ice blue to get a good range of shades.  I put in the jonquils last because they were opaque, and I did not want to mix my transparent and opaques.  I hope that the viewer has a sense of the beauty and powerful color that I witnessed at the Arboretum.

Perfect Day by Kay Wyne

Perfect Day
10" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I was cleaning up my space in the studio, and ran across an unfinished painting.  I got out my palette knife and started mixing pilings of oils with impasto.  Starting over, I decided I was in the mood for a floral landscape.  Layers and layers of paint give this panel texture and depth.  I probably need to re-photograph this painting, because the dark purple, indigo and olive in the foreground have subtle changes....it appears that there is a big black hole, but there isn't!  I don't think my darks could of gotten any darker.  y favorite part of the painting is the masses of flowers across the wide open landscape.  Perfect Day is drying in the studio.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking...Kay

Below the Turquoise Sky by Kay Wyne

Below The Turquoise Sky
20" x 20" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
Frame is optional.
Inspired by the beautiful turquoise skies of New Mexico, this painting has beautiful billowy clouds moving across the canvas.  The clouds are full of lavender, pink, coral, lemon, and grey.  I like to sit and watch the clouds move across the sky---and pareidolia takes over, as I see random images and patterns. Looking at my reference photographs is always fun when I can capture something new and different with the camera.  I wanted to capture the fast moving clouds on canvas in this painting.  Thanks for looking at my art....Kay

Posy II by Kay Wyne

Posy II
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
Layers of oils, lots of brush strokes, palette knife work and drips make this painting unique.  I had originally wanted it to be a seascape with boats at a dock, but once I started with the paints, the roses appeared and I shifted direction.  The companion painting that was created at the same time, Posy I is posted below.

Texas Cacti by Kay Wyne

Texas Cacti
30" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
Texas Cacti is on my easel drying, and I am ready for a studio critique.  Long  needles and spiny edges were fun to paint with my palette knives.  The rough, sandy foreground has rocks and tall dried grass clustered around the prickly pear cactus.  The cacti pads are painted in various shades of dark green with brown spines and colorful needles.  Tulip shaped flowers are coral, yellow and pink.  If I add more paint to this canvas, I will repost.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay Wyne
