Flower Power by Kay Wyne

Flower Power
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Painting
Finished!  This painting is drying in the studio...once I started this painting, I could not stop.  After visiting the Dallas Arboretum this week, I was so impressed and inspired with the vibrant colors of the tulips, that I could not resist painting them.  I decided that I needed to tone my canvas with a diluted Permanent Rose, then I was ready to start drawing on the canvas.  I used raw umber, olive green and violet to place the flowers and lay-out my road map.

I started with my transparent oils and put a couple of layers on, getting my dioxazine violet,  magenta, olive green, and permanent rose.  The background fades and is somewhat out of focus to create some distance on the canvas.  I mixed up about six different piles of greens, starting with sap, olive, and adding cad yellow and ice blue to get a good range of shades.  I put in the jonquils last because they were opaque, and I did not want to mix my transparent and opaques.  I hope that the viewer has a sense of the beauty and powerful color that I witnessed at the Arboretum.

Wheat Fields by Kay Wyne

Wheat Fields
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
Clouds are so much fun to to paint, and there are so many possibilities...they change quickly in nature, and they can change just as quickly when you are painting them.  These are fast moving, fluffy clouds with lots of color in the them.  This landscape painting is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Contact the gallery or myself for more information on this painting.  Thanks, Kay

On My Easel....

On my easel...
A 36" x 36" Gallery Wrap Canvas-the beginnings of a floral landscape.
After two days of painting, I am getting my darkest darks in and working mostly with my transparent oils.  I love to start with the Olive, Magenta, Indian Yellow, Permanent Rose and Dioxazine Violet, and Caribbean Blue, as they get darker and darker the more I layer them on.  I sketched my shapes in, blocking colors in, and now I am ready to put in some details on the flowers.  I started with my Ice Blue and Cerulean for the sky, bringing it down into the field of flowers.  I am using a photo of the beautiful tulips at the Dallas Arboretum as a guide.  More on this painting later....Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay Wyne

This contemporary oil painting has a new home!  That's great because I have some new pieces on my easel.  I am in the studio working on a commission and painting for myself.  I went to the Arboretum yesterday, and it looks like the tulips are peaking, so I got inspired to paint some more florals.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay

Sunday's Bouquet

Sunday's Bouquet
12" x 12" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
Yesterday we had a paint along in the studio.  I had a small bouquet of flowers from Grand baby Oliver's baptism on Sunday, thanks to the Oliver family. (O.K. I have to brag:  Cute Little Oliver is a doll...so cute, so smart and quick on his feet!) I put the flowers in a small vase and we painted for about 30 minutes, and here's the results.  I had leftover paint on my palette from earlier, and I squeezed out some fresh cad yellow--giving me just enough paint to cover this 12" x 12" canvas.  Here is a snap shot of the arrangement:
I am back in the studio today...If this floral arrangement is still fresh and colorful, I may paint it again!  Painting fresh flowers is one of my favorite subject matters.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Contact Kay Wyne for more info on this painting or any other paintings in my portfolio.  KMW

Abstract by Kay Wyne

Abstract Floral
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This painting is drying on my easel....I started with some dark greys that I mixed up from my last painting.  I took a wide flat brush and covered the canvas.  After letting it dry for three days, I went in with lavenders and greens and a palette knife.  I moved the paint around, mixed the oils so that there were interesting shades of color, and let the knife do the work.  After laying in the darks and some mid-tones, I gave it some punch with some turquoise and orange/red.  I thought it needed jazzing up.  I haven't put a title on this one...let me know if you have any suggestions.  Thanks, Kay Wyne

Beyond Seabrook by Kay Wyne

Beyond Seabrook
8" x 8" Oil on Gessoed Panel
Contemporary Landscape
I used my plein air paintings as a guide on the color palette for this small panel.  I wish I had painted this one on a large canvas---36" x 36" or larger.  This painting is getting framed up at Dutch Art Gallery.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay Wyne

Abstract - Untitled - by Kay Wyne

Horizontal
48" x 60"

Vertical
60" x 48"

I painted this abstract on a 48" x 60" Gallery Wrap Canvas.  It can hang vertically or horizontally.  I painted it horizontally until the last day, and at the point I turned it on it's side to reach some canvas that needed some detail and brushstrokes headed in another direction.  Turning the canvas on all four sides gives the viewer some options on hanging...

This painting started out as a landscape with a horizon line and colorful land bars.  Once my wide lines and shape started to take place, it began to look and feel like a stream of water with fish swimming upstream.  I concentrated on my color palette from the get-go, wanting pleasant and beautiful colors.  I mixed everything...nothing is straight out of a tube.  This painting is drying at the studio.  It isn't titled right now....although "Upstream" might be a good choice.  The sides of the canvas are painted with a dark vulcan grey, and framing is not necessary.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this contemporary abstract painting.  Kay

Sunny Seabrook by Kay Wyne

Sunny Seabrook
8" x 8" Oil on Gessoed Panel
Contemporary Seascape Painting
I used a couple of my plein air paintings as guides for the color on this small painting.  Thick piles of paint were mixed, then I used a Monarch Bright #10 to apply the juicy oils.  The water is a greenish-turquoise, with the sky more cobalt and royal blues.  This painting is drying at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas and waiting to be framed up.  Thanks for looking at my blog...I am back in the studio this week and am excited to be painting!  Have an artful day...Kay Wyne

Rooster by Kay Wyne

Rooster
5" x 5" Oil on Gessoed Panel
Contemporary Roosters & Chicken Series
Here's another small rooster!  He was so much fun to paint.  This little panel didn't photograph very well...the refection dulls the colors and shows the brush strokes, distorting the true color of the rooster.  Painted on a warm grey background, the reds, golden ochres and violets pop on this little rooster.  It is framed up and hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay Wyne

Dusty Roses by Kay Wyne

Dusty Roses
10" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
Soft pinks, greys, seafoam green and touches of white were applied with the palette knife to create this still life painting.  My colors are all on the "dirty" side, and they are harmonious because they were all mixed together and painted in one sitting.  The background is soft and uncomplicated with the vase and flowers full of movement and texture.  This painting is drying in the studio.  Contact Kay for more information on this contemporary still life painting.  Thanks, Kay

Still Life

Still Life-Untitled
16" x 20" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
Here's a blast from the past.  I painted this one several years back...Thick, painterly brushstrokes, good colors mixed.  But my style has changed.  It's looser and somewhat abstract now.  Glad to have this painting in my home, as I had given it to my parents in 2001 for Christmas.  Thanks, Kay

Three Is A Crowd by Kay Wyne

Three Is A Crowd
18" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Framed
As I was looking at some images of paintings that I have painted over the years, my subject matter varies.  Many times I paint in a series of the same subject.  I go through the dog, aspens, florals, landscapes, abstracts, cows, roosters, and boat painting phases. Here is a painting that was inspired from a trip to the east coast, and I found the boats in Maine to be very interesting.  We are already into the month of February, and I haven't settled into a series of paintings yet.  It might be abstracts, not sure.  Today's post is a painting that is framed and hanging in the studio.  I like the composition and the wide brushstrokes on this canvas.  This painting is available for purchase. Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay Wyne

Quiet Space by Kay Wyne

Quiet Space
14" x 14" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract
Soft, muted colors make this abstract a very calm and quiet painting.  I was experimenting with some new color combos on this one.  Actually, I painted over a landscape painting that I really didn't think was very good.  So there are some colors from the underpainting that peak through.  I like the cool greens, greys and grey-lavenders.  The touches of pink give it a little punch.  This painting is ready to hang---framing is optional because the sides are painted a warm grey. Contact Kay Wyne for purchasing info.  Kay

Lake View by Kay Wyne

Lake View
18" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Framed
I was going through my stash of paintings, and found this seascape that was painted about fifteen years ago.  It's clear that my painting style has changed over the years...and that my interest in seascapes has lessened. I always get inspired when we vacation Up North and have the opportunity to really study the water, boats and reflections.  This painting is a keeper-not because it a great painting (and it isn't great), but it reminds me after painting hundreds of canvases, as an artist there is always room for improvement and growth in my paintings.  I can see where I have been on my painting journey.  Thanks for looking at my blog...Kay Wyne

Admiration by Kay Wyne

Admiration
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life
Floral still life paintings are a favorite of mine to paint.  Admiration was painted in a couple of days...it was one of those paintings that the process was fun and exciting and I couldn't put my brush down.  Mixing piles and piles of oils allowed me to paint with muted colors in this still life.  The muddy or dirty colors are all harmonious, with subtle shifts of colors.  The free-form lines and shapes of the background are light and airy in contrast to the flowers in the foreground.  A wide flat brush and palette knife were used to paint this canvas, which is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay Wyne

Peaceful by Kay Wyne

Peaceful
12" x 16" Oil on Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is one of my favorite palette knife paintings...because
it went through so many changes to get to this finished stage.
It started out as a 18" x 18" canvas, and had two grazing cows
in the foreground.  I didn't like the composition, so I took the
canvas off the stretcher bars and cropped it down.  Framed up
in a dark plein air frame, it is hanging in our home.
Thanks for looking at my art....Kay Wyne
