Rise & Shine by Kay Wyne

Rise & Shine
48" x 60" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Cacti Series
Lots of Prickly Pears, blooms, and needles cover the canvas.  I started with tinting the canvas with transparent yellow oxide.  Here are a few pics of the painting along the way.
I drew some shapes in with charcoal, and immediately started putting the background in.  I used violets, blues and diox.
The shapes are very rough and abstract, and here I flipped the canvas upside down to work on it.  Several times during the painting process I will turn the canvas on it's side or upside down.
I put several layers of color in, working on getting my values.  I need to get my darkest darks in right away...or I will never get them in.  I was careful to use transparent oils and medium in the beginning stages of the painting
I continue to layer the paint, using a big wide brush and palette knife.  I did pull out a small filbert and put some lines in the add interest and shapes.  I also started putting some spiney  edges and blotches on the pads.
I deleted some of the flowers and in the end, put in the flower that is the focal point of the painting.  I put some flowering petals in with some opaque cool colors, then a few with warm golden shades.  That makes it pop!  The last step in the painting is to put in the needles...that was so much fun, but once I put them in I could to go back into the painting and change anything or it would become muddy.   Rise & Shine is drying at the studio, and will get a coat of varnish---and then it will be available for purchase.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this colorful and dynamic painting!  KMW

Each canvas is 24" x 48", but hang them side by side and you have a large square.  This palette knife painting has layers of beautiful colors and movement.  Punches of tangerine and turquoise against the greys, lavenders, pinks and blues make this abstract interesting.  Contact Kay Wyne for more information on this contemporary palette knife painting.  It is available for purchase.  Thanks, Kay

Still on my easel....by Kay Wyne

It's still on my easel!
This 48" x 36" contemporary floral still life keeps on changing.  I have deleted and modified the flowers on the left side of the canvas.  Everyday I look at the canvas, and work on it. It's probably time for a studio critique.  The next time I post the progression this painting....I hope it is finished.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Kay Wyne

Flare-Up by Kay Wyne

Flare-Up
48" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
"Flare-Up" is a very intense painting, that has gone through several stages.  I could not control the strong lines and bold color.  Intense and angry was my mood at the time I was standing in front of the easel, so that is what I painted on the canvas.   This painting is drying in the studio, as it has oil stick, oil paint with brush and palette knife work...so I will have time to study at it and live with it the way it is....or make some adjustments.  The sides of the canvas are painted Vulcan Grey, and framing is not necessary.  It's ready to hang.  I usually rely on my husband John or studio mates to help title my paintings, but "Flare-Up" credit goes to cousin Chuck.  He saw a few pics of this canvas as I was painting it, and nailed it on the title!!!  So a big thanks to Chuck.  Contact Kay Wyne  with any comments or questions.  Thanks for looking at my blog!  KMW

Fresh Pick by Kay Wyne

Fresh Pick
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Floral Still Life
This painting is officially finished!  "Fresh Pick" is signed and drying at the studio.  I started this painting months ago-maybe a year ago-and lost interest as I wasn't sure where I was going with it.  The mood hit me this week to pull it out and finish it!  We had a critique in the studio, and soon I was on my way to making some adjustments in the composition.  I pulled out my palette knife for the flower petals in the foreground, and a small filbert to make some calligraphy strokes, and then signed it.  This painting is available for purchase.  Contact Kay Wyne for more info on this contemporary floral.  Thanks for looking....Kay

Windy December by Kay Wyne

Windy December - Plein Air
8" x 10" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Landscape of White Rock Lake
This was a memorable but cold and windy day at the lake.  I was with a group of artists painting.  The wind was the biggest challenge of the day.  I had to paint fast.  I started with a brush, but ended up scraping the panel and staring all over with the palette knife.  This painting is hanging in my house and I have to smile when I look at it...the painting experience was one that I will not forget!  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Meet Me At The Dock by Kay Wyne

Meet Me At The Dock
40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Oil Painting
The first color I pulled out of the drawer was blue...that was what was on my mind.  After spending a month Up North, I had soaked up and observed the wonderful blues of the lakes, streams and skies.  I started mixing my cobalts, prussians, ultra marines and greys.  And found myself painting a dock with several boats pulled up.  I used a wide flat brush, and my strokes are strong and angular without alot of blending.  The dock has layers of greys, lavenders and earthy browns painted for the planks.  The water fades into the sky, with the boats pulled up in an unorganized fashion.  This was my first painting once we got back from Michigan.  It's good to be home.  Thanks for looking at my blog....Kay Wyne

Still on my easel...

On my easel...
36" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Another day in the studio gave me plenty of time to push the paint around on this canvas.  I made some changes in the vase/jar and will keep adding flowers and more paint.  Looking at the painting on the computer gives me a chance to decide what to do with the composition.  Thanks for looking at my blog...next time you see this canvas I hope it will be signed and drying!  Kay

On My Easel.....

On my easel...
I don't know where I am going with this canvas, but I decided I wanted to paint big and colorful.  So I pulled out a 36" x 48" canvas and covered it with a zingy green---it is so bright that it hurts your eyes.  Then I started drawing with charcoal, and looked at the left-over paint on my palette.  It was fun just painting for the sake of painting.  I hope that I can continue on this canvas today.  Thanks for visiting my blog.  Kay

Lush

Contemporary Landscape Painting
Using my palette knife, lots of paint and impasto, I applied layers of paint on this canvas and painted very fast.  I used some left-over paint from another painting that was going to dry up.  So I scraped, pulled and pushed the paint to create "Lush".  Contact Kay Wyne for more information.  Thanks, KMW

Sunflowers, Hydrangeas & Grapes: A Still Life

Sunflowers, Hydrangeas and Grapes:  A Still Life
40" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Still Life Painting
This still life is one of the art challenges we had going on in the studio.  I personally think it is interesting, busy and colorful...and it was fun to paint!  Obviously there is a lot going on, with 8 or 9 vases, 2 candlesticks, sunflowers, hydrangeas, grapes, an orange, leaves, 5 or 6 different fabrics, weeds, greenery, and just a lot of stuff.  The textures are wonderful...silver, ceramic, dried weeds, soft fabric, and I think there was a dead rat in there somewhere.  It was put together by Sharon, and everyone has been asked to paint it...or at least parts of it.
Here's my view of the set-up from my easel.  This painting is completed, and varnished.
It is hanging at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.
Thanks for looking at my art posted here...Kay Wyne
