Fenced In

Fenced In
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I must admit that I don't see too many of buffalo in Dallas. My inspiration for this painting was a photograph taken by studio painting partner Mark Malone. Last summer Mark and John Martin were driving near Cimarron, north of Angel Fire, New Mexico. Mark said that there were three buffalo close to the fence----I liked this fellow who was standing behind the fence. Mark had painted this buffalo, grazing in the field, and graciously gave me the opportunity to paint this creature. My first day of painting was fun...I splashed on some color, positioned the head off-center on the canvas. Day two was even more fun because I really got the color going. But by day three and four, I was struggling with the snout on this guy. I guess I have painted too many cows, and he looked more like a cow than a buffalo. After a critique by Karen, Suzy and Carol at the studio, I believe that I have captured the features on his head. This contemporary painting is full of color, wide brush strokes. Fenced In is for sale. Please contact me if you are interested in this painting, and thanks for visiting this blog.

  1. Kay, I love this painting. Your use of color in the abstract amazes me. After all... we all know that there is not a buffalo (Bison) out there that looks like that.. but OH.. how you brought character to this ordinary brown bison.

  2. I really like this painting. Such an interesting use of color and good advice regarding the snout which was not clear in the original photo.
