Aspens in Color

Aspens in Color
12" x 12" Oil on gessoed masonite
This painting is currently hanging at The Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Yesterday I had a telephone call from a viewer in Michigan. It was a pleasant surprise to hear from Kate---she told me that she was looking for colorful landscape art and ran across my blog and website. In our conversation, we were talking about inspiration for art. I sometimes use a photograph----my own photograph---as a starting point for a painting. We have a saying a the studio that we don't want to use someone else's photograph or copy anyone's art or the Art Police will arrest you!!! The more your paint, the more you want your art to be your own from start to finish. Inspiration is everywhere...you just have to take it and transfer it to the canvas using your own personal style and flair. I consider myself a colorist...expressing more with color than anything else....and this palette knife painting is a good example. I did not use a photograph as a starting point...I just sat down in front of the easel and started painting. Thanks for viewing this blog! I have a busy week working on commissions...Kay

  1. You are too funny! I'm hard pressed to hit the color wheel the way you see it. I do find inspiration in your work. The use of bright vivid color in artwork is the note I personally want to strike everytime. I want my work to make someone smile. EVERYDAY! And when I found your sample pieces you totally have it nailed. Kudos to you Ms. Kay. Love your work! (And inspiration!)

  2. Well thank you very much, Chicky Full a Ideas.....I think I know who you are!!! I always say that if a viewer or collector takes a second look or glance at art, that is a good thing. Paint on.....

  3. I painted Monday evening. Had so many thoughts running through my head all day, I was useless in my office. Couldn't wait to get to the studio and paint. Started an abstract while working my current piece. My instructor Michelle encouraged me to work the two at the same time as abstracts need time to dry in between layers. I was overthinking everything. I needed a glass of vino for sure! lol. Check out jonas gerard live in action on you tube. Wow Kay! :)
