Palette Knife Rooster Painting in Progress

This contemporary palette knife painting is in progress.....probably 95% complete. I was very generous with the paint yesterday (I have the cad red in my hair to prove it!) The paint is layered on the canvas with the palette knife. I need the paint to set up before I do anything else. This rooster is on a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas, and will not need a frame. I hope to put the finishing touches on this guy today, then sign him and name him! Thanks for viewing.....Kay

Rooster in progress...

Since yesterday was Christmas Day, I spent the day with family at home. I did not hit the studio....but after all the cooking, gift giving and things were winding down, I pulled out my little Guerilla Box and started painting this contemporary rooster. I had a limited palette, and not a knife to be found. So, this 12"x 12" oil on gessoed masonite has a good start with a flat brush. I think I will keep him here at home to work on. I had started a new large rooster at the studio on the 24th....I can't wait to work on him. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas. Kay

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Santas are all over the Wyne house. Each year I decorate with so many wonderful carvings of santas, angels, and snowmen. They are all different, each carving with it's own personality and characteristics.
What makes these so special is that they are all made by my dad, Charlie Miller. He works on his carvings year round, and generously gives them away during the holidays. They are all amazing!
I have collected dozens and dozens of carvings....all different shapes, sizes and colors.
This iron tree holds 28 Santas from around the world....it is our favorite decoration. Dad really did a great job on these carvings.....when he made them years ago, he made three sets. Painting the wood carvings is a task that I have been working on...I prefer my oils on canvas, but these wood carvings are fun and challenging. I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas with friends and family.....Kay

My inspiration for this painting was a beautiful arrangement that son in-law Wes gave to daughter Lindsay. I asked what the occasion was......."just because" was the answer that I got. Painting the is drying at the studio. I used thick strokes with the palette knife.

On my easel...

This floral arrangement is absolutely gorgeous, even after a week has passed since Wes gave these to Lindsay. (Great choice of a sweet "just because" gift to your wife, Wes!) I spotted them on their coffee table, and could not resist.....I borrowed them for a couple of days. This photo isn't very good, which is the reason why it is beneficial to paint from a still life. What you see in life isn't the same as what you see in a photograph. It's better.
I was in the mood to paint BIG....this canvas is 36" x 36"... a great size. I toned the canvas with a transparent orange just so that I wouldn't start out with a stark white background. Then I sketched in the shapes with charcoal.
I am not sure what I am doing with the background, but I need to get it in because I am going to use the palette knife on this canvas....all the way.
Here is a close-up of the vase. As you can see, I started putting the color on with the palette knife, and the texture is building up. I can't wait to get to the studio and work on this one today...I hope to post an update on this tomorrow. Thanks for looking at my art, and have a great day. Kay

This painting is colorful, contemporary and would great on a narrow but wall with a high ceiling. I started using earthy muted tones for the ground up to the horizon line. Then started to throw in some light and more intense colors for the leaves, sky and light ---- all bouncing off the trees. Thanks for looking at this painting.....and this blog. Palette Knife Painting

This painting was painted at Dutch Art Gallery for a demo on Saturday. I had thought about wiping it at one point, but once I let the paint sit for a couple of days, I made several strokes with the knife and signed it. This rooster was at the Texas State Fair, all caged up.....John and I were walking through the barns, and this fellow caught my eye.
Here is a close-up of the linen......lots of texture because the paint was layered with the palette knife. I felt like I was frosting a cake! I did wipe the background once....I was talking during the demo and really wasn't thinking about the color choice.....I wiped the dioxazine purple (was too intense) and mixed some turquoise and cobalt blue for the background. Bubba is finished!!!! It has taken me several months to finish this painting. Bubba is his real name, and his owners, Scott and Diane Bagley of Rural Route Illinois were kind enough to let me walk their farm earlier this year. His ear tag says # 305, and I had a very hard time reading what was underneath the numbers....I am thinking his name was on that tag, so I took the liberty of putting it on the tag. Bubba is real cute, and I wanted to capture his expression as he stood with his front feet in the tub. He is a special calf.......he has a twin!!!! (I should probably paint the twin so that there are no hard feelings between them.) And they look exactly alike. This contemporary calf is looking for a new home.
