Contemporary Spirited Horse Painting

This painting was inspired by a photograph that I took at the Lone Star Race Track in Grand Prairie, Texas. It was a very warm and sunny day, and all of the jockeys in colorful jerseys really caught my eye. There were seven horses out of the gate on this race, but I decided to focus on two horses for this painting. I had the starting gates painted in, but decided that the background needed to leave more to the imagination of the viewer's eye. I did not want to give away too much information. So, I focused on the horses and the energy on the track. I used wide brushes, oil pastels sticks and the palette knife.

This contemporary palette knife painting is in progress.....probably 95% complete. I was very generous with the paint yesterday (I have the cad red in my hair to prove it!) The paint is layered on the canvas with the palette knife. I need the paint to set up before I do anything else. This rooster is on a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas, and will not need a frame. Since yesterday was Christmas Day, I spent the day with family at home. I did not hit the studio....but after all the cooking, gift giving and things were winding down, I pulled out my little Guerilla Box and started painting this contemporary rooster. I had a limited palette, and not a knife to be found. So, this 12"x 12" oil on gessoed masonite has a good start with a flat brush. I think I will keep him here at home to work on. I had started a new large rooster at the studio on the 24th....I can't wait to work on him. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas. Kay

Merry Christmas Santas are all over the Wyne house. Each year I decorate with so many wonderful carvings of santas, angels, and snowmen. They are all different, each carving with it's own personality and characteristics.
What makes these so special is that they are all made by my dad, Charlie Miller. He works on his carvings year round, and generously gives them away during the holidays. They are all amazing!
I have collected dozens and dozens of carvings....all different shapes, sizes and colors.
This iron tree holds 28 Santas from around the world....it is our favorite decoration. Dad really did a great job on these carvings.....when he made them years ago, he made three sets. Painting the wood carvings is a task that I have been working on...I prefer my oils on canvas, but these wood carvings are fun and challenging. I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas with friends and family.....Kay

This floral arrangement is absolutely gorgeous, even after a week has passed since Wes gave these to Lindsay. (Great choice of a sweet "just because" gift to your wife, Wes!) I spotted them on their coffee table, and could not resist.....I borrowed them for a couple of days. This photo isn't very good, which is the reason why it is beneficial to paint from a still life. What you see in life isn't the same as what you see in a photograph. It's better.
I was in the mood to paint BIG....this canvas is 36" x 36"... a great size. I toned the canvas with a transparent orange just so that I wouldn't start out with a stark white background. Then I sketched in the shapes with charcoal.
I am not sure what I am doing with the background, but I need to get it in because I am going to use the palette knife on this canvas....all the way.
Here is a close-up of the vase. As you can see, I started putting the color on with the palette knife, and the texture is building up. I can't wait to get to the studio and work on this one today...I hope to post an update on this tomorrow. Thanks for looking at my art, and have a great day. Kay

This painting was painted at Dutch Art Gallery for a demo on Saturday. I had thought about wiping it at one point, but once I let the paint sit for a couple of days, I made several strokes with the knife and signed it. This rooster was at the Texas State Fair, all caged up.....John and I were walking through the barns, and this fellow caught my eye.
Here is a close-up of the linen......lots of texture because the paint was layered with the palette knife. I felt like I was frosting a cake! I did wipe the background once....I was talking during the demo and really wasn't thinking about the color choice.....I wiped the dioxazine purple (was too intense) and mixed some turquoise and cobalt blue for the background. Bubba is finished!!!! It has taken me several months to finish this painting. Bubba is his real name, and his owners, Scott and Diane Bagley of Rural Route Illinois were kind enough to let me walk their farm earlier this year. His ear tag says # 305, and I had a very hard time reading what was underneath the numbers....I am thinking his name was on that tag, so I took the liberty of putting it on the tag. Bubba is real cute, and I wanted to capture his expression as he stood with his front feet in the tub. He is a special calf.......he has a twin!!!! (I should probably paint the twin so that there are no hard feelings between them.) And they look exactly alike. This contemporary calf is looking for a new home. This contemporary palette knife painting has layers and layers of color and texture. I started with a base coat of warm gray on sides and front of canvas. After putting my horizon line in, I used oil sticks and brush to apply color. Using the palette knife, I started putting trees in from the horizon line. I wanted more violets, blues and grays to dominate on the canvas. The crimson, burnt orange and turquoise bounce off the cool colors, giving the piece some contrast. Palette Knife Painting on 10" x 17" Raymar Panel

This palette knife painting was inspired by a kitchy wooden rooster from Macomb, Illinois. Mary Karas liked roosters, and this one had a prominent place in the Karas kitchen. I remember it well, as I spent many hours at their house growing up. Mrs. Karas gave me this rooster years ago, and it has been roosting in the Wyne kitchen.

Here is the wooden rooster next to the painting. I jazzed up the feathers and exaggerated the length of his neck, and added some color to him. He does have personality! It will probably take months to dry since the paint is very thick. I did not use a brush, only palette knives. Mac was fun to paint, especially since he has a history! Omni Hotel Dallas - Bathroom Art

The new Omni Hotel in Dallas is completed. The ribbon-cutting ceremonies and reception was held last Friday. It is an amazing hotel, with ART everywhere! Here is a pic of a guest room bathroom, and the 32" x 32" mixed media piece that I created. It was a great project, and I met lots of artists while working on it. This painting is drying....I used a cooler background color than I normally do on this canvas. The canvas is rather thick, and gives the canvas a chunky, heavy look. I liked the size....more of a small to medium size canvas. I wanted to create some depth, with the viewer looking through the canvas, eye wandering around. The colors on the canvas change from deep violets and purple and greys to roses, oranges and ochers.

I loved the linen so much that I did not want to completely paint over all of it, so the natural color of the linen is exposed on all four sides and some of the actual painting. This painting is completed, but I have not given it a title. Blue is the dominate color with some rich purples and rusts. Contrasting colors of turquoise, coral and green are in the falling leaves. This contemporary oil painting has texture since most of the paint was applied with a palette knife. There are some wide brush strokes on the canvas, but for the most part, I used the knife. This painting is available. I have been away from the easel for two weeks.

This tree is in the neighborhood where my father lives, in Macomb, Illinois. I was visit last week, and the fall colors were magnificent! The trees in central Illinois were golden ochre, burnt orange, crimson, and everything in between. It was the first time in a long time that I was able to see such a variety in the fall leaves.
Change of scenery....Charleston, SC. John and I visited the Huettes who had just moved to Mt. Pleasant this summer. We toured the city, walked along the beaches and enjoyed wonderful seafood. The architecture and landscape were lovely. I was disappointed that I did not see a big old alligator. With these two trips behind me, I am getting ready for the Artist of Texas Annual Membership Show today at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas. Thanks for viewing, Kay

I had a bad day on Tuesday. My phone and my laptop died. The phone issue was resolved when I went to AT & T and got a new one...I do need to program it, learn how to use it....but I do have a phone now. The laptop situation is not good, since I LOST everything on my hard drive. So, if you have any photographs that I have sent you, or you have photographs of you and I together, please send them to me. Lesson learned: you should always have an external hard drive back-up on your computer. Sorry I don't have any art to post today.....have a good day. Kay

This abstract went through alot of changes before it was completed. When I started it, I was using a totally different color scheme and did not know I was going in this direction. I applied layers and layers of color...there is alot of movement and depth in this abstract. I used both the brush and palette knife on this one. Lines, shapes, color and texture...it is all on this canvas. I really like this size canvas...it hangs well above a dark piece of furnture or tilted up against the wall, sitting on a table or cabinet. On the High Road

On one of our trips to Santa Fe, John and I took a day trip: The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway. It is a lovely, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Santa Fe and Taos. The landscape was fabulous.....magnificent vistas of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and charming traditional Spanish and Pueblo villages. This drive through the mountains has inspired many artists and artisans who live along the High Road. As we were driving through the village of Truchas, John pulled off the road and I photographed some horses fenced in a yard with the mountains in the background. This little painting was fun, and I was inspired to paint a bear after our trip to Jackson Hole, WY. We did see a black bear in Grand Teton National Park. We had just entered the park, and came across several...maybe a dozen or so...cars parked along the winding road. It was a bear jam! We had heard about these bear jams clogging up the traffic flow in the parks. The wildlife in Yellowstone and Teton National Parks was amazing.
