Studio Still Life

Studio Still Life
24" x 30" Oil on Canvas Panel
Here is another still life from the Don Sahli workshop.  Reflections, shadows, lights, darks, and nailing the correct color made this still life a challenge.  I painted this panel with a #12 Filbert from start to finish.  Thanks for looking at this blog.....Kay

Studio Still Life

Studio Still Life
24" x 30" Oil on Canvas Panel
This study was one of Don Sahli's set-up at last week's workshop.  Don always takes time in arranging an interesting still life.  My favorite part of this painting is the dishcloth...it is old and I love the variation in the stripes.  More posts from his workshop tomorrow.....Kay

Cottage Still Life by Kay Wyne

Cottage Still Life
20" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Framed in a Dark Mahogany Moulding
This painting was painted in Colorado at a Don Sahli workshop.  It was an interesting arrangement...and because of the subject matter, it reminded John and I of the cottage in Michigan.  I loved the enamel pitcher, fruit, antique platter and dish towel it felt like I was pulling things from the cottage for the still life.  The light was bouncing off the ceramic jar and the the fruit.  The oils will take a long time to dry, since I used very little medium with the oils.  Thanks for looking at the art posted here....contact Kay if you have any questions or comments on the art posted here....thanks, Kay

Welcome by Kay Wyne

Welcome
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Oil Painting
This is a painting from a photograph from Dreama Tolle Perry's workshop.  I believe that Dreama took it on one of her trips to France.  I do like painting old architecture that has lots of character and imperfections.  I thought this front door was very welcoming.....thus, the title, "Welcome".  I used my artistic license and stacked in the potted plants and the vines up the outside wall.  It was fun to use Dreama's color palette and some of the tools she uses when painting.  This painting is drying in the studio and will probably be propped up on an easel.  Contact Kay for more information on the art posted here.  Thanks, Kay

Courageous by Kay Wyne

Courageous
30" x 40" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
This abstract got some attention this week at the studio, as I was looking at it with a friend. I painted it on a horizontal format.  It was brought to my attention that it looked like it should be hung vertically, as in the photo below.
Either way, the bold color against the titan buff background bounces against the ochre and the blues.  There is alot of movement in the painting, with wide brush strokes.  I wanted this piece to have energy and boldness.  Your eye may like it horizontally or vertically...it can be hung either way.  Thanks for looking at this blog and the art posted here.  Have a great weekend with family and friends.  I will be in the kitchen today getting ready for Easter.  Contact Kay with any questions or comments on my art.  Kay

Pretty In Pink by Kay Wyne

Pretty In Pink
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Floral
This painting is drying after painting it with friends at a great workshop in Shreveport, LA with Dreama Tolle Perry.  It was an inspirational, motivating and informative time spent with other artists.  Dreama is so knowledgeable and generous with her art, and makes it all so much fun.  This study was the first of several paintings I worked on.  I loved the color palette, and really worked hard in avoiding muddy colors.  Pretty In Pink would look great in a floater frame...I may order one for this floral.  Thanks for looking at this blog....contact Kay for more info on my art.  Kay

Flutter by Kay Wyne

Flutter
24" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This contemporary palette knife painting was inspired by a red dragonfly photo taken by Mark Malone last summer.  I believe he had the dragonflies in his garden.

I liked the clean, crisp colors.....no mud.  Cad orange, cad green, magenta, sky blue, and white were all out on my palette for this painting.  I was very careful not mix colors too much because you really can't recover for muddy colors once they are on the canvas.  A little bit abstract with the hard edges and large shapes. Contemporary, abstract, colorful and textural are characteristics of this painting.

Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  No frame required with the gallery wrap canvas....ready to hang!  Thanks, Kay

Roam by Kay Wyne

Roam
18" x 24" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Buffalo Painting
This painting was completed yesterday, and is drying at the studio.  I had painted one buffalo several years ago, and really enjoyed it, even though it was just a head shot.  I photographed my progress as I painted...so below you can see my work.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.  It is ready to hang once it dries....frame is optional since it is on a gallery wrap canvas.

Sketching the buffalo out on the canvas.  I prefer to use a filbert brush and paint for drawing...not alot of detail, just basic shapes and darks and lights.  My reference photo was from a Wyoming trip.  This buffalo has a great stance and I want her to fill up the canvas.

Covering the canvas with paint.  This part is lots of fun, using a wide brush I block in colors.  Working fast, I love slapping the paint on.  This part is so easy and fun.

More color, trying to figure out the background and getting my darks in on the buffalo.  I am changing the background up, wanting it to fade away when you look at it.

Using a smaller brush, pushing the background back...greying up the clouds and the landscape.  Sometimes I use too much color, so to make the buffalo have a presence on the canvas, I am making hills and landscape more abstract and fuzzy.  More details on the horns, snout and coat.

I was waiting to put in the tall grass.  I had to make sure that I was almost finished with her coat before I could put the foreground in.  I reshaped her nostrils and worked on the eyes.  I got a new brush as a gift today from fellow artist Pete Quaid, and I was loving it!  More work on the coat, letting the paint fly, with loose strokes.  The grass has lots of blues, purples and red in it....not just ochre and greens.  So that is the different stages that this painting went through.  Thanks for looking.....Kay

Missed The Boat by Kay Wyne

Missed The Boat
12" x 12" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is a small palette knife painting that was inspired by a weathered dinghy in a small fishing village in Maine.  I liked the rust and all of the imperfections on the dinghy, and all of the rocks poking up out of the water.  There is texture on this panel....and the painting is framed up in a dark wood moulding with a gold liner.  Ready for a new home!  Contact Kay for purchasing information.  Thanks for looking at this blog and the art posted here.  Kay

A Burst Of Color By Kay Wyne

A Burst Of Color
14"x 14" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This contemporary abstract landscape evolved after I mixed and mixed and mixed colors.  I love the tangerine and hot magenta along with the golden yellow/orange. It is fresh, bold and fully of energy!  This painting has texture since I layered and layered the oils with my palette knife.   It is currently drying at the studio.  Please contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Quatro! by Kay Wyne

Quatro!
36" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Rooster Painting
This is a fun and loose painting...when I started out, I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted the four images to be.  The first thing I did was put out some neutral colors for the background.  I usually use bright, bold colors so I had to keep telling myself that something neutral would make the roosters pop off the canvas.  I used some ink to produce some lettering.  I had five shades of grey ink that I used.  Then I started with some lines and geometric shapes.  Then the fun part.....I started with a wide brush and put in an outline on each rooster....I was afraid that I would over-paint this, so I forced myself to put the brushes down and go home.  The next day I used a liner to suggest the details of each rooster...and I did not want each one to be the same....so, here you go.  Quatro!  Contact Kay for purchasing information.  Thanks, Kay

Colors Of My World by Kay Wyne

Colors Of My World
8" x 16" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting

This small landscape painting is colorful and has a dreamy look to it.  I think that the viewer can put his or her imagination to work when looking at this one.  The color palette is beautiful...with so many colors and the cad reds and oranges bounce off the greens and turqoise.  This painting does not require a frame since it is on a gallery wrap canvas.  Contact Kay for more information on this colorful little painting...thanks for looking.  Kay

Out On A Limb by Kay Wyne

Out On A Limb
12" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
This contemporary oil painting is fun and colorful.  All five songbirds are perched out on a limb, doing their own thing.  The size of this canvas is unusual...12" x 36" landscape is pretty long and narrow, and would great in a den, office or hallway.  It has a punch of color and would be a great addition to any wall or bookcase.  Contact Kay for purchasing information.  Thanks for looking at the art posted here...Kay

Lavender Fields

Lavender Fields
14" x 14" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Landscape Painting
I was exploring the greens and lavenders in wildflower landscapes, and stopped when I got to a point where the painting is abstract, very little detail.  No fussiness and no blending of colors.  This is part of a series of fourteen canvases, all 14" x 14".  Contact Kay for more information on this painting.  Thanks so much, Kay

Pasture

Pasture
14" x 14" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This abstract painting allows the imagination to take over where I left off.  I wanted a horizon that faded into the background and a foreground that implied a large open field.  The greys, lavenders and greens all work well together, creating a harmonious painting.  There is texture on the surface since I used a palette knife.  This painting is part of a series of fourteen 14" x 14" landscapes.  Contact Kay for more information on this painting or any of the art posted here.  Thanks for viewing....Kay
